What do you think if I will reveal “LOVE Plan” of Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人) (The First Part) that happened in the Cultural Festival? The story of Hayama during the School Cultural Festival, was not shown clearly because the story (in anime season 1 ep10-11, LN v6) focused on the main characters (Hikigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡), Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃), Yuigahama Yui (由比ヶ浜 結衣)) and Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) more than him, but Hayama himself tried to hide his plan so no one will know what he thought and felt back then, so while I are arranging the latest analysis about Haruno, it appeared that that post is too long more than too long analysis I ever wrote, so I carried “his secrets” to this post instead.
Hayama’s love plan(s) to catch attention of “that girl/woman” is not what you should miss. I will say that his intelligence is beyond the boundary, or should I say, I am surprised in “the management” of the author of Oregairu. If he will launch Oregairu (Hayama version), I will be the one who will pay for it for sure. I will say that every times Hayama thinks the strategy, he will think about it carefully even Hachiman would be speechless and open his mouth for sure, if he knows Hayama’s plan.
But I will tell you one thing that while I am writing Oregairu analyses about this character that people always see his as the nice & popular guy that you might meet people like him in real life, after I can catch some thoughts and feelings of this character, it appeared that I started to see him as a normal human who will always do anything for his own satisfaction, sometimes he helped other people too, and tried his best. However, he always has hidden intention when he answers people’s expectations, but he hides them well. So when I wrote that I will reveal every of his love strategies I found, along with his feelings and thoughts during the School Cultural Festival. All of his doing, for gaining attention from “that person”.♥♥♥

However, no matter how effective his love plan(s) are, and he will make sure his plan must be confidential, it’s not easy because “the person” he has the feeling for, is interested “another boy” and never look at Hayama like that. But I will not say Hayama planned many things during the Cultural Festival. But I will say that after he lost that boy in “a secret competition” in LN v4 and it “seems” he admitted his defeat.
But when I read in v6, it appeared that he decides to do many things. This is not a fair fight, but the war. Why does he need to tell his love rival that he will win her heart and defeat him? Come to think of it, I will say that his love rival never knows “who is that person Hayama ever mentioned” in v4 that she is looking for him. Hayama never tells the name of that person.

Before I will start to reveal Hayama’s love plan in full detail, if you wonder who is his crush I mentioned, you can read in Finally, “Y” in Hayama Hayato’s Heart Was Revealed. If you know who is that person, it will be easier for you when you read my analysis from now on. And in this analysis ⇑, if you don’t know Hayama’s love rival, this analysis can help.
And about the love plan, if you read this analysis, you will know Hayama saw Hachiman as his love rival in LN v4, but it’s the secret fight, no one know but him only.
The School Cultural Festival The daytime LN v6, anime ss1 ep10-11, manga -Monologue- v4-5
If you reach this point, I will tell you to know two characters that will get involved in Hayama’s love story first. I think at this point, it’s safe to reveal their names. Hayama’s crush is Haruno and his love rival is Hachiman!!
Maybe you might not agree with me, I think it is understandable. But I need to provide these characters first before explaining anything after this.
After you know who is sitting in Hayama’s heart before you will proceed more than this, I will say that “her secret mission” to help her little sister, Yukino is starting during this festival event too. So you will know her feelings and thoughts during the School Cultural Festival too. If you are interested in her route, read more in

So all preparation is ready. I will use the original reference (LN v6) mainly because some scenes about Hayama didn’t show in other mediums. If he wants to steal her heart and defeat Hachiman because he realized that Haruno is looking for Hachiman (in LN v4, anime ss1 ep8), what should he do to change it? What he needs is “an opportunity”. It is the same when Haruno wants an opportunity to help her sister, Hayama also wants a suitable chance to seize her heart.
Then after he was defeated secretly by his love rival during the summer vacation, he looks for any opportunity to interact with his rival for some understandable reason. His emotion drives him to do things during the fes. Actually, love plan is one of plans he tries do it to gain her attention but he also acts many things to his love rival while wearing positive image. To sum it up, he will “do his best” for both of them.
The notices
1. Hayama is not the male representative.
So I will skip to the period when Sagami Minami (相模 南), a character in his class, who was recommended by him and Tobe Kakeru (戸部 翔) to be the female representative for their class and needs to attend the committee meeting. I will not analyze for now why he didn’t volunteer himself to be the representative because it can be anything. Maybe it is because he wants to do some flashy jobs that he can show off more than the background job like the committee or he doubts that his crush might participate in this festival too so he needs to “reserve” his place for his music band so he can show off in front of her who also did the same activity. Anyway, when he witnesses she arrives to the school, he tries to do many things because of her existence significantly.
And this first notice will help me remember that he doesn’t volunteer himself to be the committee members.
Haruno is the one who ever attended at Sobu High and graduated already, it’s highly possible that he would know her history since it is not weird to want to know the legend/story of the person you are interested when that person was in the school, isn’t it? Since he is a student in the same school as her, he can find these pieces of information (I smell the fan club). Please don’t forget she ever was the chairwoman last year. If Yukino knows, how can Hayama not know?
Nevertheless…
- it doesn’t mean he is sure that she will volunteer the event in this year for real but I think it is normal if he is expecting she will come to the event and watch activities at the stage.
- and it doesn’t mean he is really looking for her to come. Maybe he never expect she will at all. This possibility is still possible.
2. Hayama’s Discontent
When Haruno notices Hachiman and is greeting him, don’t forget Hayama is still standing nearby. So while he is watching his crush, spotted the one she is looking for and greets “that boy” excitedly like that, you can imagine how he is feeling while he is watching this scene. So I can understand why he comes to the room and stands next to Hachiman. But when I see the illustration at this point, I see he is standing in front of Haruno… as if he wants to stop her to not stop approaching to that guy more than that, because Hayama feels so je*****. I am also sure how Haruno is feeling toward his action. But at least Hachiman notices there is something uncomfortable behind their tones.
Maybe it is possible that she is displeased someone she dislikes is in front of her or she dislikes how he interrupts both of them or both of these assumptions are correct. But at least I believe that lifting her hand to cover her mouth is the body language to cover her true feeling toward Hayama (imagine when she is upset while doing that). I use main character’s reaction in manga named Bitt*r Vi*gin as the reference to explain Haruno’s case because both of them do the same while they are talking with someone in order to cover their feelings, to maintain their friendly reactions.
To sum it up, Hayama will not let her approach to that guy while he is watching, and wants to tell her that he is not pleased.
3. Finally, Hayama starts to do his best for Hachiman.
Since Hayama realizes that Haruno will participate to the school so often. I think this information and this event are useful for him to show off “any good thing he can do” to her (she ever played the guitar and sang (info from manga @Comic v6)). Finally, I understand what he says while walking out of the committee room after he knew that she will join the festival. He just recalls that he comes here to pick up the documents, and leaves quickly. But I am sure picking up those documents is just an excuse so he can “do something”.
The reference that helps me reach the answer is manga @Comic. When Hachiman is walking with Hayama, he reminds when the guy beside him declared his negative emotion to him during the summer camp. So Hachiman tries to act as if it is nothing. Hachiman’s memory that he is thinking while walking with this nice guy, tell me that Hayama still has that negative emotion.
Besides, when I look at his face while walking with Hachiman to the committee room, I can feel clearly that he has no any good will. His confident expression at that time is not because that is him at usual, it is like… the face of a villian who is looking for the right time to “do his best” to his love rival who dares to seize that person’s heart.
Since I can confirm that he asks Hachiman so they can walk together to that room while holding ill will with him, it means sending Sagami to be the committee member is not because of he wanted to find the female member but for something different, something sinister. I will explain about this later.
3. Why does Hayama volunteer to be the representative of volunteer organizations?
The trial still continues and it seems the situation is worse. Anyone who still stays and work is shouldering more burden because people who spend time in the class, are increasing. When Hayama came to the conference room and realized the situation, he tries to convince Yukino to rely on others. And he volunteers to help them.
“No, I’ll coordinate the volunteer organizations, and nothing more. Basically, I’ll act as their representative.”
If you see someone outsider wants to light the burden, you would be grateful. Even Hachiman thinks Hayama’s help will help them a lot, no wonder about it. Sharing work with others is reasonable and suitable. The work in the planning committee is not something just a few people can do it. To work on a large scale, you need more people. So when Hayama sees the situation, he says he wants to help. I think people will be grateful for his good intention.
However, this is another time I was deceived, not because he tricked me but I was the one who deceived myself. (?) I will explain why it is like that. I think Hayama is expecting something. If we don’t know his true intention, you would think he just wants to help people only. But I think he is a normal human, who will do anything for his sake as the first priority, for the sake of other people is second or to cover his desire. So right now, there are many things that make me think it is suspicious he volunteers this job.
- His quote above ⇑ If you review his word carefully, you will notice “his content designation”. This point I want you to review it because his word is very suspicious, he “defines” to work “this job” only. Also “nothing more,” he says is …his emphasis. Someone might be confused about how his word can be suspicious, it looks normal to you. I want to tell you that WW hides some important clue, he tries to show us unusual action of Hayama. He who is so lazy that I noticed since LN v4 (let others do cooking and makes some excuse smoothly so he can skip this job by going to talk with other kids instead, other works he did are to show off that he is used to it or to answer his own expectations such as helping Tsurumi Rumi). So volunteering this time doesn’t exclude from this rule that is answering his expectation and to show off. That’s why I think he “really wants” to coordinate the volunteer organizations as their representative for his own personal desire.
- Then why did he [not volunteer] or [accept] to be the male representative of his class and works in the planning committee? If Hachiman was chosen by a certain homeroom teacher, it means no boys want to do it. I think most classmates would vote for Hayama. I don’t know what happened in the class back then since LN focused via Hachiman’s point of view, and he was in the infirmary back then. So it means that Hayama didn’t volunteer himself to be the male representative, or he refused to accept this. So I think “Why does he volunteer to take hard job although he himself refused or didn’t volunteer to work in the planning committee at the beginning?”. Although it is possible he has the simple reason, just doesn’t want to work headache job such as the committee. So I will leave this question for now. But believe me, if he just wants to help others but not take difficult job such as the coordination job. If he help them this and that but not volunteer 100%, this will make sense to me.
The chosen one. - My suspicion in 2) still remains so I will look back at my assumptions about him wants to realize Haruno participates in the cultural festival. If my assumptions earlier are correct, I can get the answer for 2). I assume that he just is the normal boy who wants “attention” from a certain woman who he found out that she will work in the school festival as “a volunteer”, Haruno. If you notice, I emphasize the words “a volunteer”. If you connect my assumption in 1)-3) together, I hope you will begin to see why he volunteers to coordinate volunteer organizations.
- He is the first person who mentioned the situation of the planning committee, I assume that he wants everyone to feel worried about this problem so his volunteering will be reasonable. Pointing to “the worst ending” that everyone doesn’t want to let it happen but it might happen soon, is the key to convince others to accept his so good intention.
I’ll make them worried. - If my assumption in 3) is correct, I can explain why he was not the male representative of the class. If he knew Haruno will participate or even her plan to help her little sister, and he knew before the representative selection will happen, I think he might change the direction completely. If he wants, he can investigate to find the most suitable position to gain the maximum benefit. So the male representative might be a good choice or not since he can meet her many times because she will often come to the committee room (her imouto will work there too so Haruno will come to visit her often or not). And if he chooses both jobs (the committee member and the hero in the music band) might also be attractive. Anyway, his effort might
deceiveconvince her that “he is working hard” that I am sure he knows well that helping people will make others believe he is the good guy or incredible. Telling other committee members that he will do help is one of many incidents that proves how people will see about him, a good guy, or someone’s points.Let me help (for my own purpose). But he didn’t know Haruno will participate in the festival. So if he knows she might visit the festival only, working hard in the committee room that is the background job that he can’t show off his skill to her who he imagined by himself that person would not come is not the wise choice ⊗, because she will not show up at the conference room often if she visits as the alumni. So what is the point to be the male representative? In order to show off his crush so he can gain more attention from her, he needs to find where she can see him in the spotlight when he is outstanding at the stage such as playing music, the same activity she ever played when she was the chairman. And the same musical instrument she ever chose to play (however, I really hope he would not go too far to copy her at that point). Unfortunately, Yukino calls her to help some job so she doesn’t watch him play, too bad.
So he needs to do work in the classroom first to reserve some space to do outstanding activitie(s) in the future. And you can also notice why he doesn’t want to play BL drama Ebina Hina (海老名 姫菜) plans. Imagine how it will be if his crush is watching him to be a gay is approaching to another gay… (I don’t mean Totsuka is like that but his role is …like that, ok?). To describe his feeling if Haruno watched him play BL, you can find the answer by reading manga Watashi ga Motete Dousunda for example. And you can see how he reacts after knows the judgment from a certain fujoshi he will play BL and understand why he tries to follow Hachiman’s reason so she will not make him play this.
While I will leave how Haruno will feel in your imagination. ♥
All of these are reasons why his offer to coordinate the volunteer organizations is very suspicious. If he accepts this job, he will have a good excuse to see her often when she is preparing the musical performance (and if he is lucky, he can even watch her enjoy the performance). Moreover…
When he knew that her sister, Yukino is getting trouble, I think it’s one of best opportunities for him to get more score by helping her sister (although I am not sure if he also expects this bonus since I have no evidence/hint). If he can be the representative to do coordinate work, when he has the chance to coordinate with Haruno’s group, I think she might notice that he is helping her sister by volunteering to do this hard work. Helping her sister is an effective way to get high Haru scores from Haruno since he must know she cares for her sister the most.
Although this is my assumptions only and it is possible he doesn’t plan as I wrote so please consider this theory carefully. Even if I can’t find any evidence/hint, I can’t find the same thing to reject this assumption (help Yukino to get Haru score) either so I think it would be fine to collect opinions as much as I can.
Hayama clicked “Angry” to Hachiman.
Skip to the first Hachiman’s sacrifice, in the meeting to discuss the slogan for the Cultural Festival. Hayama and Haruno also are in the conference room. After the dark warrior cast Meg@nte until the case closed and Yukinoshita sisters got affected by his spell, you can notice Hayama just left and didn’t say anything to Hachiman for some reason.
At first, I ever thought he just doesn’t like Hachiman’s sacrifice so he left, he doesn’t want to see Hachiman hurt himself like that. But I ever wrote his hidden intention to want Haruno interests in him. So I will rethink about this issue again. Hayama until now was trying his best in coordinating with the volunteer organizations so he can show her he is trying his best to help her little sister and he can meet Haruno more often. But when he saw his love rival confront bad people that amazed Haruno (she is the only one who responds to Hachiman’s sacrifice in a positive way) a lot.
And when Hachiman is explaining to Hiratsuka-sensei, if you look via Hayama’s point of view, everyone still focused on his rival, but I don’t think he cares others except that only one. Although Hayama hates to see Hachiman gets her attention, he can’t do anything but watch Hachiman’s show until the end. His rival made Haruno contents of his bravery and Hayama can’t switch off TV so she can’t see the show, but it’s not enough, his rival can face bad people to solve the problem, along with identifying the troublemaker at one fell swoop, and he didn’t try to be nice with everyone who caused this situation at all.
The inferior complex of Hayama toward Hachiman and his dissatisfaction when Haruno is very pleased in Hachiman’s declaration are the factors that made Hayama is so angry to his rival and left, didn’t say anything to Hachiman. In the situation right now, everyone is still there, so he can’t show his feeling openly in public nor confront his enemy (yes, enemy). It’s not like when he was with his rival alone previously, he doesn’t mind to show his true feeling (but still didn’t say why he felt like that to his rival bluntly either) to Hachiman. So when he is holding his feeling and leaves, it’s understandable.

Please imagine when you are seeing the girl you like, is very pleased in the bravery of another boy, not you, and in her eyes, there’s the image of that boy only. It’s like his love rival got high Haruno scores, while he…well.
Hayama thinks “How to” of Hachiman is [making himself as a victim].
Since Hayama interpreted that Haruno likes Hachiman’s doing, and after the summer camp event, he convinces himself that Hachiman is the bad guy (the same case Hachiman convinces himself that Hayama is the good guy). Why does Hayama try to believe Hachiman is the bad guy? Because if he sees him as the “bad” guy, he has right to destroy the one he dislikes. Believing Hachiman is the bad guy will allow Hayama (the better guy who seeks for justice) to attack him whenever he finds the opportunity. Such as describing that the class need to vote the one who has the leadership and popular so he can bully Hachiman mentally (Hachiman confirms this theory because he also believes he has no that qualities), or sending the girl who lack both qualities so she can “do her best” for him, that might be messing up the committee or her existence insist Hachiman’s disqualification, got it? And this can explain why he is walking with him. Since Hayama is convinced by his own illusion that his rival is the bad guy, he can walk with him confidently as if… he can pierce the spear to him if he can find the chance again, or he wants to explore Hachiman’s workplace so he can find any excuse to bull-, umm, for justice! Yes, he just wants to do what most people will do, looking down on people they dislike. This is how he “does his best” to Hachiman.
As a result from these factors above, he concluded that Hachiman tried to make himself as a victim of society. The victim of society is an outstanding being but not in a positive way. I assume that Hayama interpreted from Hachiman’s remarks when he reported to Hiratsuka-sensei or tried to interpret Hachiman’s action so negatively for his own self-satisfaction, so it’s not weird for Hayama to think that Hachiman tried to be a victim because Hachiman himself was the one who said that he sacrificed (its meaning is positive way, though because I notice Hachiman doesn’t try to say he is the victim but to explain the situation to sensei only).
Although Hachiman just wanted to tell Hiratsuka-sensei about the situation in the committee. He didn’t know about everyone in the committee much and he can’t say loudly that everyone who is working hard is victims either, so pointing himself is the one who sacrificed should be more suitable.
Everyone will interpret people’s thoughts and feelings via their doing and words only.
The reason why Hayama interprets Hachiman was the victim of society because this belief will ease his suffering because of the inferiority complex. If he thinks like this, it will make him feel good. Looking down upon another side is the usual way for the loser to pull the winner lower. Since Haruno likes his rival’s doing, her action also means Hayama ‘s existence is ignored completely. Also his action in the past that is opposite with what Hachiman did, remind Hayama’s sin without any mercy or not, I don’t know. I am not sure if Hayama feel like this too but it’s possible since his inferior complex is increasing every time his rival’s method works. I am not surprised if Haruno ignores him already,

1. The Truth Behind Choosing Sagami.
This might be oot but it is not quite since there is some dark truth behind Hayama’s action and I suspect that he did all of these to give Hachiman some trouble. (?) You might be confused about why I think like this. OK, let me explain. After Hachiman was chosen to be the representative to work as the cultural committee, no girls want to volunteer herself to work in this department. So Hayama and Tobe agree to ask Sagami as another representative that she says yes.
At this point, I didn’t doubt anything that much because he just wants to find the suitable person to be the representative or I should say I couldn’t find any connection until someone in the community, left a comment about …Hayama’s word that hides impure intention toward Hachiman. That moment is when Hayama tries to offer his idea and Hachiman’s thought toward Hayama’s opinion.
When I reviewed Hachiman’s depression that …yeah, I (Hachiman) was chosen but I have no leadership at all. At first, I think it can’t help for him to think like that so I left it at that. Until I realized that Hayama never misses finding any tiny chances to hurt this boy, even this moment. I can feel that he “intends” to hurt Hachiman smoothly by pretending to tell his idea in the classroom that they need to find some girl who has the leadership but his idea is torturing the certain male representative.
After I suspect that why he doesn’t want to volunteer himself to be the representative despite he has the quality but when it comes to choosing a girl, he gives the idea of how the representative should be. That’s why I decided to leave a question that why does he try to offer the idea despite he doesn’t want to be the representative?
If you don’t want to be the representative, it is normal to not say anything about this matter since you don’t like to be. But Hayama does what I don’t understand why he tries to give some opinion for the representative despite he was the one who didn’t want to volunteer himself. This is …weird to me. This unconformity makes me start to find his objective.
So we will start at when he tries to offer the idea that they need to ask a girl who has leadership. But when other classmates include Hachiman are thinking about someone like that, they will not find someone who has the leadership but they will look for the leader in the top caste, the leader of the popular groups in that classroom.
If you consider Hayama and Hachiman’ opinions, you will notice that although Hayama’s idea doesn’t specify anyone. But it really specifies that that person must be Sagami at the beginning. Why? Because if you will consider which girls are like that, the first choice is Yumiko because he knows well that his group is in the top caste and number one. So it is her. However, she announced by herself that she and Yuigahama will attract customers. That’s why Hayama doesn’t mean Yumiko so the next choice is the inferior group, Sagami’s group.
With these steps, I can say that he specifies her at the beginning. Although Tobe is the one who tells her name, it doesn’t matter since Hayama’s idea “controlled” other classmates’ minds. If Tobe will not say anything, Hayama or other friends will turn at Sagami anyway. So I will conclude that he intends to make Sagami as the representative. The next question is why does he choose her?
- I think Sagami’s existence (popular & leadership) or Hayama’s short explanation is still ringing in Hachiman’s ears. So it is possible that her existence can hurt Hachiman’s feeling. To sum it up, Hayama enchanted the poison magic to enemy for justice, justice is him. This assumption is possible but it doesn’t deliver high damage since Hachiman would be busy. How can this hurt himself so many times. That’s why I think it is possible that it is just short-term damage.
- Or he plans to plant the unhealthy seed, Sagami in the garden of the committee room so he can assist Sagami “do her best” for the justice while he will visit the garden to guide her as the leader of the party? Unfortunately, a certain nee-san would find out that unhealthy tree so he needs to stay away from growing it. If this Onee-san doesn’t arrive to this room, wow… the party of the hero and the assassin… Maybe Haruno is Hachiman’s guardian angel unintentionally? That’s why Hayama says like that before he leaves? …So this is how he thought while the class was searching for the female representative?
If it is as 2)…, so freaky! I really hope I’m wrong this time for real. I can’t believe Hachiman is targetted by someone like this!
At this point is the real challenge because I can’t find the solid evidence and even a hint to point his true intention. But when I am sure that he wants Sagami to be another representative, it is normal to doubt his intention that he doesn’t do this to help glasses guy finding the representatives but for his own self-satisfaction. But how he designs the plan is mysterious. But for me, I believe in his steps, how to tor-, umm, destroy the darkness for the justice, step by step because I suspect WW designed this kind of structure since I witnessed Hayama’s “the multidimensional plan” which brings the destruction to most people. That’s why I suspect that every actions of Hayama are relatable (explains the representative’s qualification, votes for Sagami, and asking Hachiman to walk to the conference room together for some reason) significantly. So I would choose 2) as my answer. And I am looking for WW to launch LN Hayama’s version to reveal his objective.
Hachiman is so lucky this Onee-san is by his side.
2. Why does Hayama say he wants to go to the committee room with Hachiman?
Previously, I thought he pretends to go there with Hachiman so he can “explore” if his crush is in the committee room. But since the possibility, they will meet is very low, this assumption is not correct. But after I reviewed his feeling toward his rival, Hachiman, and his declaration in LN v4, I think explaining his emotion would make us see the connection.
Return to LN v4, he told Hachiman that he would not be friend with him. And if I connect this moment with “Y” that is Haruno who is looking for Hachiman, it means that we can understand his feeling toward a boy who stole her heart (in his opinion, Hachiman stole her heart). So when we skip to the moment when he asks to walk with Hachiman to the committee room, I think Hayama who right now dislikes this boy, decides to… “approach to” Hachiman who he counts as the enemy.
The hint that tells me it is related to the love triangle that is clear in LN v4 came from Hachiman’s monologue while he is walking with Hayama. He doesn’t know about this LT at all but he is thinking about that moment when the guy beside him showed the darkness to him for the first time despite he was smiling. This hint is the key to explain Hayama’s intention this time at the present because it must be related to that LT between him, Hachiman and that person. He knows that Hayama is not his friend so you can imagine why Hayama wants to be close with Hachiman. And I don’t mean BL as Ebina is imagining. In order to start to understand Hayama’s action this time, you need to set “Hayama dislikes Hachiman because his crush is fond of him” as the basic information or else it is difficult to understand why he wants to walk with him.
I didn’t understand his action either until I remembered something in another LN, Yōkoso Jitsuryoku Shijō Shugi no Kyōshitsu e (Classroom of the Elite, ようこそ実力至上主義の教室へ), Kushida Kikyou (櫛田 桔 梗) tries to approach to her classmate, Horikita Suzune (堀北 鈴) because this girl might know about her secret in the past because both of them were the same school. Kushieda’s action to be friend with her is not because she likes her but to “monitor her and secure her past”. Horikita’s existence alarms her because she might leak her secret to others and if that happens, imagine how her future will be.
Hayama’s action is not the same as Kushieda’s but he wants to “harms/defeats” his enemy. Hayama’s approaching is like “learning the enemy and finding the chance”. Be close to him so he might learn anything that will be useful. Someday that knowledge might make him use in various ways in order to defeat the enemy beside him. It can be his habit, weakness, life, mind, anything. In Hayama’s point of view, the approach is what he chooses because he wants to win this fight. And if there is a chance, he might do anything that is suitable such as the way to bully him or expose something unpleasant about his rival to his crush. To sum it up, Hayama approaches to Hachiman to find the chance to win this fight.
Actually, I started to find the answer because of manga @Comic v7. It shows Hayama’s self-confident and Hachiman’s opinion about he tries to approach him. These are hints that helped me reach this conclusion.
In LN v6, when Hayama comes to the committee room, you can notice that he tries to increase more workload to the certain assistant historian by acting as he is asking for help but the truth is different.
If I use this assumption that he approaches Hachiman in order to defeat him and check the answer if this is correct, there are many truths that show how he feels and does when he knows Hachiman’s truth.
In LN v7, while both of them are talking at the riverside, Hayama noticed the truth behind Hachiman’s sympathy toward his suffering. And after that he witnessed how Hachiman maintains the relationship in Kyoto, that is the first time Hayama realizes “something Hachiman wants” that is not different from him. From that time on, he holds this valuable secret and can look down upon his rival whenever both of them are alone.
In LN v10 – the second memorandum, after Hayama found the method from his book to change the situation between him and his crush, Haruno who already rejected his feeling in LN v8, he used Hachiman’s secret and that method in order to let Haruno realizes Hachiman’s truth by herself. Actually, Hayama didn’t do anything at all but his detachment is like waiting for her to know Hachiman’s truth is what Hayama did. You can notice in LN v11 that someone, somewhere in the chocolate making event is laughing because his plan is successful.
This is the reason why he says he wants to go to the committee room with Hachiman.
3. He reaps what he sows.
When I assumed Hayama intent to make Sagami to be the female representative because he wanted to use this chance to look down upon Hachiman who has no leadership quality and another time when he helped the cultural committee to coordinate with other volunteers so he can approach his crush and might gain some Haru scores if she knows his good action. But his previous actions made him get the burden more than he ever imagined. The evidence of this assumption can be found if we check the timeline.
Sent Sagami > Sagami announced the new policy so she can skip her duty > He volunteered to help the committee > Hachiman noticed how Hayama’s smile changed that shows how he was so tired because of the coordinating > convince Sagami to not help the class.
At first, since I didn’t know about Hayama’s stiff smile so I couldn’t find why he tries to convince Sagami to do her job because I didn’t see why he needs to help Hachiman (??) and almost thought that he has some good points. Another thing is if the chairman can change her mind and returns to do her job properly, it means other staffs who are skipping their jobs, would return. This means Hachiman’s workload will be decreased. Helping Hachiman is not benefit for Hayama since he was the one who liked to increase more works to his rival stealthily. So I didn’t understand why he tries to persuade Sagami until I found the lost puzzle.
4. The hidden hostility of Hayama.
ps. The conversation between him and Hachiman didn’t happen in anime.
Hiratsuka-sensei tells Hachiman that Yukino took the day off because she wasn’t feeling well. Hayama and Meguri listened to sensei’s new so they need to check up on her. But Meguri needs to deal with the big incident that is related to the slogan. So he and Hayama need to decide who will go to Yukino’s apartment. While they are picking reasons up who is the most suitable to do that, I notice something after this is… weird. I don’t mean Hachiman since he is thinking about this issue because we can read his monologue clearly, but I notice something wrong in Hayama’s remark. To tell you the truth, I don’t know why Hayama is angry so suddenly (judge from this remark).
Hayama’s gaze clashed with mine directly in front of me. “I’m going to say this while I can, but I don’t think you’re deadweight at all. You managed work from all the sections as an assistant, so there shouldn’t be anyone who can say that you’re useless.”
From his remark, I notice Hayama’s anger is bursting out, or his hostility is showing in his reaction and keywords. At first, I thought he wants Hachiman to have more self-esteem or something like that. But this assumption can’t explain about Hayama’s emotion when he said like this. So when I look in his remark again, I notice some words (red words above) that makes me rethink. And with his reaction when he is talking with Hachiman (Hayama’s gaze clashed with mine directly in front of me.), I think it as if, Hayama is looking down upon Hachiman. And this his remark (I’m going to say this while I can), I will let you imagine when someone is angry and say this remark to you, what will you feel? I think this also supports my new assumption that Hayama’s emotion right now is not what Hachiman will expect.
So I tried to find why he feels like that. If I look via his point of view, Hachiman tells him to go since someone thoughtful and useful would be better. Hayama is surprised after heard this but questions him back that if it’s like that, “someone thoughtful and useful should stay instead”. I don’t know why Hayama is acting in a boastful way, but if he is seasoning Hachiman’s remark and feels inferior by himself so he responds by looking down upon Hachiman?
If he dresses up Hachiman’s opinion by thinking that Hachiman is intimating that the one who is not thoughtful and useful, should stay?
So if Hayama is thinking Hachiman is looking down upon him like above, I can understand why he said like that back to him as if he is acting in a boastful way to Hachiman. We know Hachiman has no intention to look down upon Hayama at all. So I review via Hayama’s story instead. I don’t know you read my analysis about “Y” of Hayama yet, but I think you would read my assumption about he wants attention from Haruno already. So I assume that Hayama knows Haruno is looking for Hachiman and her eyes don’t look at her little brother after all and Hachiman’s victory in LN v4 (can solve the same problem that he couldn’t), so he feels inferior to Hachiman automatically. So when he heard Hachiman says like that, although Hachiman didn’t mean anything negative, Hayama interprets Hachiman’s remark that he is abusing him and his hatred drives him to say like that to Hachiman. I will say that just a normal remark from his love rival can make Hayama misunderstands and acts like that.
I think another reason is that Hayama has the habit to say something that hides his true feeling in it. And he also lives in the society that some people have this similar habit. So he also has the habit to interpret the ill will of people among words, to survive, to escape from any danger. That’s why when the one he hates says like that, he TLs it by believing that there is some ill will there.
I am sure that what Hayama wants Hachiman is to reconsider who is the most thoughtful and useful. If Hachiman says he himself will go, I think Hayama will accept it, will be satisfied in his ridiculous victory, and he (Hayama) who is better than him, should stay and do work here, the one who is not, should go. All of these happened in Hayama’s head only so it can explain Hayama’s inferior feeling to his love rival. He is not satisfied until he can beat Hachiman down. You can notice when Hayama and Hachiman are alone (no one nearby), he will show his hidden feeling that he can’t show to other people (even his friends) to Hachiman only since he is not scared how Hachiman will hurt or to be his enemy.
But since Hachiman believes Hayama is the nice guy, the nice guy will never hurt others like that. So Hachiman is scary a bit when he realizes that even the nice guy like Hayama, can have negative emotions. Because it’s not consistent with Hayama’s image. This is how forcing the nice guy image to Hayama of Hachiman can deceive Hachiman so he can end this stupid fight because he doesn’t fight back. Because of this forcing the image, he can’t even realize Hayama’s ill will in his opinion toward him although he can feel this nice guy is scary.
But I can feel Hachiman will eliminate his own illusion (Hayama is the nice guy) in the end, in order to encounter the true Hayama, the true bad guy. Because the big project of mine proves this belief already.
5. Even Hayama can feel lonely.
It seems Hachiman’s belief (Hayama is the nice guy) never waver. So it means his encrypted code just now never reach Hachiman at all because Hachiman “seasons” his opinion more, “Hayama is capable and everyone needs him”. When you look via Hayama’s point of view, although he can win this debate, his love rival still forces “the good guy” image to him. So it is normal for Hayama who has the habit to hide his true feeling in his words doubts Hachiman’s words. People who are used to the ill will of others (and even themselves), will always doubt people’s intention.
And another interesting issue is why Hayama feels lonely. I am not sure why he feels like that or if Hachiman’s opinion is correct but I think if we look via Hayama’s pov, after he was the one who roisters unilaterally while another side showed “few reactions”, he would review his own actions and feels …embarrassed. It as if his ill will hardly reach another side. When he did this and that alone (hates him unilaterally, overcomes him unilaterally and doubts him unilaterally) but when he looks at Hachiman, his words, his feeling passed this guy like the wind.
5. The reason behind Hayama’s image of Hachiman.
After LN v11, Hachiman admits he forced the strong girl image to Yukino and the nice girl image to Yuigahama. So I returned to look at how he is forcing the nice guy image to Hayama. I will not deny he is the nice guy but that is just outer appearance. But when Hayama showed his ill will to Hachiman for the first time in LN v4 and Hachiman doesn’t forget that moment, I assume how Hachiman still thinks that boy is the nice guy, is an interesting issue. I suspect he was afraid of Hayama who showed his ill will to him so he forces the image that will make him feel safer, the nice guy image, the previous symbol of that boy. Forcing this image will defend him from any ill intentions that will be flowed from Hayama.
OOT but not quite.
Hachiman in this LN v6 has tiny incentive to hate this guy, different from what happens between both of them in v7 when Hayama “criticizes” him (after Hachiman solved Ebina’s case) because he began to realize Hachiman’s true desire that is not different from him. Hachiman would begin to hate this guy at this time since Hayama can see right through him because of his sympathy and action and he can feel that Hayama looks down upon him despite he ended his problem just now (for Hayama’s expression in anime when he criticizes Hachiman is not consistent with LN, I recommend manga -Monologue-). This is my notice. His fear of Hayama would disappear or change to hatred.
For example, you can see when Hayama glares at him and looks down upon him. I don’t believe Hachiman who is used to capture the darkness of other people around him, can’t notice his scorns even one bit (except LN v4). After Hachiman confronted his aggressive, he is scared but doesn’t interpret Hayama’s words negatively but positively. This happens because forcing the nice guy image to Hayama is like the shield that protects the wearer who is Hachiman. As long as he believes that guy is the nice guy, it is no way he will harm him. The nice guy will not do that. Hachiman’s action is not different from other people, once they believe that person is nice just because they saw nice action/word from that person, they believe that this truth is the whole truth and judge that person so easily.
Another interesting issue is right now we reached LN v13 but Hachiman still sees him as the nice guy. In v11, he gives up to believe both girls are the strong girl and nice girl because he saw things actually. So I am looking forward when this illusion toward Hayama will change. That would be LN v14, maybe.

Before Hayama will realize that Haruno is looking for someone, this incident happened before he met her again between LN v3-4. Hayama’s feeling toward Haruno is not what happened with no any clue. If you want to know when/how he realized that the person he has the feeling for, is interested in his acquaintance, this post will help you. In the second season of the anime series, I’ve always thought that Hayama did not like Hachiman because it was either he hated his low self-esteem, or how twisted Hachiman’s solutions are, or Hachiman acting out as some sort of victim as a solution to every problem. But I never thought about jealousy coming into one of the reasons.
Hayama probably did thought that Hachiman was trying to win Haruno over by being helpless since that’s how she swings (helpless guys are her type? idk). It is quite possible since as you said, “people only think of other people by their words and actions.”
This series is always great when it comes to people’s psychology and making it interesting for a viewer. It makes people think deeper for each character as they are relatable and feel very real.
I love these kinds of articles. I’m looking forward to the second part. Also, have you written about the whole Hachiman, Yui and Yukino affair? Seeing that you’ve read the light novel more than what I hope to, I was hoping to read about your thoughts about it.

Although I never write about the whirlpool in the service club except what happened LN v5-6, but I think I notice something interesting one or two (such as in LN v7 – Kyoto trip). However, I am sorry I can’t write about this topic, since it’s kinda sensitive issue. Actually, I ever discussed with some people who have analysis focused on those three and other characters, but they will not reveal in public. And I understand their decisions, since it’s sensitive issue, and Yukino & Yuigahama are VERY popular characters.
I hope you will give me your opinion more in the future. Since the next post will descend to this blog soon.

I hope they will release ss3, but it will happen for real is still questionable. Let alone when ln v12 will descend because they used the story in ln to make ss1-2.
I think they would consider ss3 will help the sale (ln and other goods) increase or not. The demand is very important. I really think we can expect ss3 because there are demand from fans every month. I can’t guarantee ss3 will happen for sure. But I don’t believe it will never happen either.
