Oregairu Analysis – [Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku Season 2 Ep 12-13]

This Oregairu analysis will be focused on anime, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. Zoku episode 12-13. After Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) told HIkigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) to ask her sister, Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃) about her career path, so he can notice something, the next step of the secret plan of Haruno is…

This post will focus on the scene in anime Oregairu Zoku ep12-13, start when Haruno met Hachiman again at the cafe to check if he asked her sister about her career path. But before I will continue, I wrote about the reasons why she wanted Hachiman to ask career path of Yukino (anime season 2 ep11), and I analyzed already that she intent to make Hachiman see how her sister will respond if her idol asks her personal info. So she came to the school to talk with him while they were walking to the train station.

When Haruno met Hachiman again at the cafe, she asked him if he asked Yukino what her career path is. Although he can’t tell Haruno about it because it’s bad to reveal personal info of other, Haruno realized that her little sister told him about that. However, I wrote in the previous post that what Haruno was aiming is not get this info, but this assignment will make him see how her sister “trusts” him. So the next step of Haruno’s plan is to introduce “the real topic”.

When Haruno witnessed her sister “asked Hachiman for help” in ep10, she realized that her sister is doing “something” that is not good for both of them (Hachiman and Yukino), so she decided to meet him because he becomes the next idol of Yukino. And now I think she will start the conversation about this problem because Hachiman saw how her younger sister trust him, so Haruno started by teasing him.

“Oh, what a dutiful lad. But I see. So if it’s Hikigaya-kun, she’ll properly tell you. Mmhmm… Yukino-chan trusts you quite a bit, doesn’t she?”

When Hachiman heard her opinion, he was embarrassed, let alone remembering the conversation he and Yukino had in the infirmary room. So it’s normal for him to be humble by saying that it’s not trust, although I feel that he was happy. However, when Haruno heard his opinion, she was surprised because he realized that Yukino’s action is not trust. Hachiman was surprised but he wanted to listen to what Haruno wants to say.

Hachiman thought Haruno was teasing him about her sister trusts him.

Haruno didn’t think Hachiman was humbling, but realized that what her sister did is not trust.

…

Anyway, Haruno introduced the topic she wanted to talk with him.

“That’s right. That isn’t anything remotely like trust… It’s something much more horrible.”

“Nothing’s changed and that child thinks that’s fine. I mean, sure, that part is also what makes her adorable, but… I really don’t like that.”

• The First Line – From her words above, the first line is her conclusion about what her little sister has done.
• The Second Line – have two meaning.
  1. what Yukino is doing to Hachiman, doesn’t change from what she has done in the past, and she doesn’t see why it’s not fine. – Haruno compared the past and the present and concluded that her little sister doesn’t see why it’s bad to do.
  2. and how Haruno feels before and when she understands what Yukino did. – Haruno has been liked what Yukino did, but her feeling changed, and she still hates it until now, love ⇒ hate.

At first, I don’t know why Haruno said like this. What her sister did is telling him her career path only. But I don’t think Haruno was kidding either. While she was telling him about this, although she was staring at him, it’s as if she was diving to the sea of memory, the past that relates herself and her sister. From her remarks above, I can conclude that Haruno is the one who has had bad experience about this definitely, or else it’s no way she can be aware what her sister is doing to Hachiman, or she can tell that nothing is changed either.

What I didn’t understand more is why Haruno had loved what Yukino did to her because it’s adorable, but hated it in the end.

And How does the assignment that Haruno has sent to Hachiman relate this topic?

If I consider the scene when Yukino told Hachiman her future career path, it’s no way I can understand what Haruno tells. Because this is the scene Haruno wants Hachiman to see [how her sister was seeing him as her idol.], and it is the second event. The first scene is when Haruno was aware that [Yukino was asking for help from the next idol, Hachiman], and he witnessed that scene with his own eyes.

If you look via the point of view of Haruno, she noticed “the bad omen” that Yukino is trying to do with Hachiman (ep10), so she planned to solve this problem as fast as possible. However, this is Haruno, she is college student so she was not near them all the time, so she was not sure if Hachiman realized what her little sister was trying to do with him yet. Telling him about this but lack of evidence would not make him believe. That’s why Haruno came to the school as the tutor and gave him assignment (question Yukino about her future career path).

Now Hachiman saw those two scenes.

1. [Yukino had been asking for help from the next idol, Hachiman]
2. [how Yukino has been treating him as her idol.]

Why did Haruno want Hachiman is aware what Yukino is trying to do?

1. Her sister is following Hachiman’s shadow, such as choosing the same course as him. This behavior is normal for high school students because they don’t want to be separated. But she chose to follow him although this is what she must decide carefully because it will affect her own life. If this “following shadow” was not stopped as fast as possible, it can be worse to the point she will “copy” idol, because Haruno knows well that her sister lost her own self. Following other people will hurt Hachiman and Yukino. If Yukino realizes that the path she chose is wrong when/after she studies in the third year, Hachiman will feel under pressure and regret in the end.
2. High expectation – If Haruno was afraid of the history will repeat itself again, she realizes well when her sister poured too much expectation to her. So she will do the same thing to the second idol too. If what she was expecting in him is “helping her from someone”, no matter he say yes or no, he will take the most damage unnecessary. Haruno is the case study because she loves her sister so she answered Yukino’s expectation, but what she got is…
3. Because if this continues until the end, no one will gain benefit. Hachiman will take the most damage from Yukino’s action, because Haruno who had been the first idol of Yukino and already affected that damage from her sister, knew well about what will happen to him.
4. Her little sister will hurt again. If Hachiman can’t answer “her high expectation” when she needs him to do “something” for her, she will do the same as she has done in the past.
5. Haruno feels for him. – If I see Haruno as the normal human, I think she sympathizes with him. Because she is the only one who has suffered from Yukino’s action the most. Although she didn’t feel pressured or was not sad because Yukino didn’t follow her shadow anymore, the effect of being “perfect big sister” still remains until now. Hachiman will feel the same as her if Yukino still continues, that’s why Haruno tried to pull him from the illusion.
6. Hachiman is expecting Hachiman, and he is the only one who can solve this problem (in Haruno’s opinion). – From what happened in ep12 (when she destroyed the happy moment of trio), Hachiman disappointed her because he had said about “genuine” but he continued this game that didn’t solve the problem. This moment made me think she is expecting that he will solve this problem if she makes him be aware about this problem that is so difficult to notice.

Haruno had tried to help Yukino because she realized what her little sister lost, so she helped her to find out her own self, that I had written her secret plan to make her sister gain her own self by pretending that she came to the school to have more fun during the school cultural festival, but she came to support her sister so she can recover Yukino’s self if her sister tried her best in outstanding position and was recognized from other people.

Haruno’s plan is to make her sister build self confidence, the important factor that will help her sister find her own self, but Yukino lost it for a long time (the cause is still unknown). Although this plan had been successful because of Hachiman (because her sister changed for real), but Haruno was not satisfied with the result in the end.

Hoh…

Haha… my sister hates me…

It’s very difficult to notice the truth behind Yukino’s action because…

It’s much more difficult to find out why Haruno really hates what her little sister is doing to him, although Yukino’s action is adorable. I watched many happy moments between Hachiman and Yukino… and I found no abnormalities. The scene in Destiny Land, the infirmary room, the party after marathon, New Year, when she wears glass, serves tea, M@x Coff**, valentine chocolate, even after ramen time, etc (I can’t remember). How Yukino treats him is so adorable, it’s not different from other romantic comedy anime/LN.

However, I can’t forget Haruno’s words in the beginning of ep12. That’s why, although I didn’t see any abnormalities, I decided to step back from these happy moments and looked at all the options.

Until I realized that all of them are on the same page.

If I search for the answer why Haruno said she hates what her little sister is doing, I need to collect all clues [how Yukino treated Hachiman], [how Yukino follows his shadow], [how she asked him for help] and [another clue from Haruno – lose self] together, I will find the truth behind

If I don’t interpret from all clues, I would not know the meaning in Haruno’s words above, the scene when she told Hachiman about what her little sister is doing to him and what she has done to her (Haruno). From her words, she compared the event at present and the event in the past.

If I can find out Yukino’s motivation, we will know the meaning behind those happy moments too.

What Does Yukino Want From Hachiman?

To answer this question, I need to look at these three scenes first.

1. In anime ss2 ep9, Yukino told him to help her someday.
2. In ep10, when she didn’t want to go with her mother, she looked at Hachiman to ask him for help.
3. In ep13, Hachiman told Yukino that she should solve her own problems by herself.

With these clues, what she wants him to do is helping her from her own problems (that would relate her family). And from the third clue, he knew her expectation for a long time. Although he can’t answer this expectation, what he can do is only to keep silent because he is scared that their relationship will not be the same anymore. That’s why he didn’t do anything, but Haruno destroyed this game and Yuigahama Yui (由比ヶ浜 結衣) made him reveal his feeling.

Then, relying on Hachiman is not good for Yukino?

Relying on him to do something 100% that she should resolve it by herself is not good for her in the long term. Oregairu is the story that explains how people will feel if they expected and believed in image of others, but were betrayed because they misunderstand. At least Hachiman, Yukino and Haruno had already faced this problem. And there are more disadvantages.

1. Their friendship will be broken. This almost happened during season 2 ep8.
2. If their friendship is broken for real, it will cause long-term impacts on both of them, even Yuigahama and Haruno too.
3. For Yukino, if what Haruno said during ep13 is true, she who has no self would get more severe impact than others.

Why Did Haruno Think Yukino’s Action is not Trust, But Something Much More Horrible?

If my assumptions about Haruno [notices the truths behind Yukino’s action], [compares two events in the past and present] and [was the first idol of her younger sister] are correct, I can conclude that she is the one who has affected from what Yukino did.

And Haruno noticed Yukino’s action in LN v10, so I tried to search for more clues in this v10. But it appeared that I never noticed a certain chapter that the author wrote clearly at the beginning. And that clue is in

The Third Memorandum

I will tell you first that this memorandum was written after the scene when Haruno gave Hachiman assignment, and before the scene when she met him again and introduced the topic.

But if the one who Haruno felt she had a connection with the shepherd is another family member?

When I changed a suspect and reviewed this memorandum again, it appeared that… well, I recommend you to read this memorandum. If you want to know why Haruno told Hachiman that Yukino’s action is not trust, but something much more awful.

Why Did Haruno Come to The School Again During Chocolate Making Event?

There are two reasons.

1) She wanted to let Hachiman see one of Yukino’s problems – how she didn’t tell lie but didn’t say the truth.

At first, I have thought that Haruno’s curiosity developed to another level because I didn’t understand why she disturbed her little sister although she was very busy. Maybe she wants some chocolate from Yukino?

But after I realized that she wanted Hachiman’s help, I consider about [Haruno’s worry to solve this problem], and more info from her, Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人) and Yukino during chocolate making event (anime Oregairu Zoku ss2 ep12). ⇓

1. Yukino had given Hayama some chocolate during elementary school.
2. Haruno tried to introduce the topic about how her little sister has never lie but there were times when Yukino didn’t say the truth.

However, the cost Haruno must pay in order to tell Hachiman indirectly about problems of her younger sister, Yukino defended herself why she didn’t think to give some chocolate to her big sister by saying that she had never been given chocolate from her either. The bitter smile of Haruno told me that.

But from their conversation, Hachiman realizes that Haruno has also understood [how her little sister will not lie but doesn’t say the truth.]

That’s why I assume that Haruno didn’t interrupt her sister to want some chocolate, or want to know who she will give chocolate.

ps. Actually, Haruno has tried to interrupt her sister (while she was teaching Miura Yumiko (三浦 優美子) make chocolate), but Hayama tried to pull her back because she might annoy Miura that will shake his peaceful world.

2) Haruno was being in “big trouble”.

ps. This moment didn’t appear in anime.

Another reason why Haruno wanted to come to the school because she was being in “big trouble” for some reason, so she “tried so much” to look for someone to drink with her. If I have some free time, I will write about this topic too.

But The Tables Have Turned.

Haruno tried to run her secret plan slowly but surely by letting Hachiman get more info of Yukino’s problems. So she interrupted her sister to let him observe quietly. Yukino tried to deny her big sister but she dropped the bowl on the floor….(skip)… until Yuigahama felt jealous after she had watched the scene in front of her (the intimate friendship between Hachiman and Yukino). When she looked at her empty palm after she gave the bowl to her friend, Hachiman thought she had a lonely expression and clenched her fist that showed how she feels.

And please don’t forget that Haruno was keeping her eyes on them. Actually, she had intent to let Hachiman understand about Yukino’s problems more, so she meddled with Yukino’s work.

But

• Hachiman who she was expecting him to help her solve Yukino’s problems and he would notice the abnormalities, but it turned out he didn’t do anything and let this game carry on.
• Yuigahama was doing what she has promised that she will never do “that” to her little sister. If you want to know about that promise, you can read in LN v5.

While Hachiman was sitting down the chair, he heard someone was gently laughing away from somewhere. I am not sure Haruno or Hayama (who also has realized the situation of the trio), but if I need to bet, I will bet Haruno who could not believe that this unbelievable drama will happen.

But I think she would not believe what she saw, so she observed them until she watched the happy moment of trio (Yuigahama let him taste chocolate and trio are happy ♥) and saw Hachiman had no any intention to solve Yukino’s problems. That’s why after he said thanks to 2YY, Haruno walked near him and questioned him that

“This is Hikigaya-kun’s genuine things?”

Hachiman can’t answer her and averts his gaze because this woman caught up his faults. But she will not let him escape so she closed the distance between her and him and asked him again. When 2YY were intervening, he told them to stop because he didn’t want both of them realize what Haruno was saying or he didn’t want 2YY know about his sin, so he needs to deal with her by himself.

Actually, when Haruno had appeared again, he and co. felt uncomfortable. In Hachiman’s case, he was scared that she will notice what he is doing, and the truth that he tries to not think about Yukino’s condition. That’s why he questioned Isshiki Iroha (一色いろは) why she had invited this person to this event.

From next words of Haruno, she can’t believe that he will let this game carry on. Her words showed her disappointment in him because he had been the one who had said “genuine” and made her doubt this until now. But what he was doing is opposite from what his own word. But yes, he didn’t do anything wrong, he has never promised her to solve Yukino’s problems either, so this is her fault to build his image from his own remarks and actions in the past by herself, and misunderstand his image that she created. That’s why even if she is so angry and disappointed in him, it’s her fault 50% to believe he will solve this endless problems.

But right now, Haruno realized that he was this sort of person.

Although he decided to deal with her alone to not let 2YY realize his own sin, he couldn’t stand the third eye of Haruno. That’s why he looked away while gave her some excuse. When consider his actions at the present, she laughs as if she was watching something funny. I am not sure what so funny, she laughs because of this show he was playing, or her wasted effort, or both of them. If she realized that he had no any intention to solve Yukino’s problems, it means that

these are wasted efforts.

Hachiman hopes she will leave them like that, but this time she glares at them and summarizes that all of them are so boring. Therefore, she tells her little sister that she prefer Yukino-chan of the past.

I am not sure how different between Yukino in the past and at the present, but I think she compared her little sister and found out something that she didn’t like. But if I need to guess, I think the topic that Haruno has tried to explain to Hachiman indirectly so he will notice one of Yukino’s problems during this chocolate making event, might be the key and what she dislikes in Yukino at the present, that Yukino in the past has never had it before. Another reason is the author would present and connect clues together.

And Then, Yukinoshita Haruno Introduces Measure.

When the trio reached Yukino’s apartment, there Yukino’s mother was waiting for her daughter. She had been informed from her eldest daughter about future career path of Yukino and asked Yukino why she was doing outside so late. As she said that she didn’t understand, she blamed her daughter and blame herself to pressure Yukino.

At first, I have not known why Haruno told her mother about the career path that Yukino had chosen, but I haven’t thought over about it. However, while I am writing this post, I found out her objective. After she had understood that [Hachiman had no intention to help her solve Yukino’s problems and insisted to play this game], and [Yuigahama showed her jealous that made Haruno predict the bad ending that Yuigahama will do to her sister] because of the intimate friendship between her friend and her crush, and will hurt Yukino in the end. If you had already read LN v5, Haruno told how other people have done to her little sister (admire → jealous → oppose → …). Yuigahama right now are in the second stage.

Maybe Haruno would be worried too much, but if you look carefully, people around her little sister were playing game that is not good for her sister, also Yukino tried to play this game. If Haruno couldn’t rely on Hachiman and couldn’t stand to let her close friend hurt her younger sister, she must stop these problems by herself!! That’s why she introduced decisive measure to slash their relationship. And the one who can do this is her mother.

If my assumption about Haruno’s measure to destroy their unhealthy relationship is correct, Haruno just makes her mother move and so she will help her control the situation (is she the soldier?). So she informed her about the career path of Yukino. The good evidence why I assumed that Haruno intends to destroy trio’s relationship, is she told this information to her mother after she had been so disappointed in the trio during chocolate making event.

And we will jump to ep13, when Haruno came to the school to pick her little sister up. This is another evidence that shows how Haruno was controlling the situation by picking Yukino up after the school (umm… Yukino is the high school student). She told her little sister that their mother had told her to stay with Yukino for a while. This is the third evidence that Haruno was controlling the situation by living with her sister.

If their mother is not satisfied with the future career path that her daughter has chosen, the next thing that will happen, is changing it. If Yukino has no choice but do as her mother says, her future career path will be the science course, the course that she will be separated from Hachiman and Yuigahama automatically (both of them chose liberal arts). Please don’t forget that Hachiman had told his career path to Haruno, so she could predict Yukino’s choice so easily because she had been following Hachiman’s shadow. If her mother can change the career path of Yukino, she has no chance to stay with Hachiman and Yuigahama because there’s no club activities in the third year.

 

And this is just my personal opinion only, I feel that her mother who has been not satisfied about her daughter lives alone, her career path and when she came back home so late. Also how her mother blamed her daughter and herself. All of these might lead to moving back home.

The last evidence is Haruno’s words, after Yuigahama asked her permission so she and Yukino can talk about this problem seriously.

“There’s only one place that Yukino-chan can return to anyway.”

The Last Attack of Haruno in Ep13.

After Hachiman had suggested Yukino to call her big sister, Yukino “copied” his words 80%. When Haruno had listened to this, she realized that the condition of her sister is worse. Her laughter that could be heard from Yukino’s phone, tells me that she couldn’t believe Yukino’s condition can be worse to this point (even Hachiman and Yuigahama noticed it), so she asked Yukino to pass the phone to him.

“You’re so nice, Hikigaya-kun.”

Her words is not different from the taunt. Imagine when he heard this while was looking at “his masterpiece” that was in front of him.

If I have some free time, I will write more assumption about the third memorandum in LN v10, that might relate the conclusion that Haruno has told Hachiman once. If you want to know why she told him that it’s not trust but something much more horrible, you don’t need to wait for my update, but you should read the third memorandum and look for the connection between episode 12 (the scene when Haruno told Hachiman about Yukino) and that memorandum.
