Despite what happened during the school trip has ended already, but why does Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃) stay mad at HIkigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡)? Because he still avoids the problem? Or she hates to see him give bad opinion? Or she didn’t want to see him sacrifice himself anymore? This Oregairu analysis will search for “the origin of her endless emotions” that made her stay angry at him continuously.
Before I will start
I strongly recommend you to read LN v7-8. And manga -Monologue- v6-7.

One of legendary question that made me ever so confused in Yukino’s story, is why she stayed angry at Hachiman, although Yuigahama Yui (由比ヶ浜 結衣), who also mad and cried in what he did, can calm down.
Before I decided to launch this blog, I can’t understand why she expressed her anger toward him although the incident during the school trip already ended, but what is more confused for me is why she was so disappointed at him when he gave his opinions or explained reasons during they got the request from Isshiki Iroha (一色 いろは) that Shiromeguri Meguri (城廻 めぐり) and Hirasuka Shizuka (平塚 静) advised her to come to the service club, to solve her problem that her classmates caused.
So I was curious why the middle phase of rift between Yukino and Hachiman occurred and still continue until anime ep4, it seems her anger was extinguished after she talked with her older sister, Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) for some reason. Even so, although she didn’t express her anger to him anymore, the crack between both of them, became the big crack of trio (because Yuigahama also was included in this later). There are many complex things until I can’t understand why it became like this anymore.
That’s why I hope the others will have good opinions to explain why she stay delivering the flame of anger to him continuously and clearly, from other sources and communities.
good assumptions from the others
- when she heard his bad ideas to solve Isshiki’s problem, she disliked his method.
- or she didn’t want to see him hurt in order to help the others (in this case, their kouhai) anymore.
- or she hates he was going to avoid the problem, like when he did during the previous event?
These opinions convinced me because she showed her demur to him, every time he opened his mouth. But if her opposition was not consistent with assumptions that want to tell me that she was worried about him. Because there’s one time he explained her method (look for other candidates) is reasonable but it also will cause them more trouble in long terms and unnecessary.
And after I read this explanation, I also agree with him. Because Yukino’s method is very reasonable, thoughtful, even Yuigahama and Isshiki believed it can solve problem, but it will make them (club members) must assist this president in the future, even when they are the 3rd that they need to concentrate studying for the exam. And it might even cause their future in long term instead.
But even so, Yukino took an argument that is not related to this issue at all, but changed into “complaining” and made “cornering” him by making him remind the certain incident during the school trip instead, that made him can’t stay in the club room anymore.
This made me doubt assumptions number 1) & 2).
- If she just hates his bad idea, she would not show her opposition when he explained how it be if they do as her own method.
- if we assume that she was worried about him, this can’t explain why her anger was overwhelming that even other people notice this strangeness.
- if she just hates how he avoids the problem, she can just tell him but not need to deliver flame of anger to the point everyone worried.
So I had no choice but let it be. And that’s when I didn’t write any analysis yet.
my travel that made me find my own answer.
When I launched this Yahari Bento blog, I am interested in analyzing mysterious characters like Haruno and Hayama, so I focused on these characters. But while I am writing Oregairu Analysis – The Conclusion of Yukinoshita Haruno’s Plan (Operation Fire Doughnut) & The TRUTH(s) behind Hayama Hayato’s Sacrifice for Hikigaya Hachiman (Part 3), I have no any intention to write this post at the present, but when I am writing the analysis …part 3, I must write about Yukino’s volition when she is going to help her kouhai.
And because of reason I wrote in previous analysis,Oregairu Analysis – Why are Yukinoshita Yukino and Yuigahama Yui So Angry at Hikigaya Hachiman (During The School Trip)?, that is analysis that I finally found why 2YY was so mad at him during the school trip as the unexpected bonus. With analyzing her story and timeline in reverse (LN v8 > 7 > 6), after I found out why both of them get mad, I also found out why Yukino still keep her anger. So I recommend you to read why 2YY were angry at him, before read this post.
In the analysis above, I didn’t write the problems why Yukino was angry at him only, but I want you to know how she thought and felt during LN v6 until she reached her own conclusion in LN v7, that her mind that is not different from Hachiman’s much. If you didn’t read the post above, it’s impossible to understand how what happened.
I explained in the post above that the reasons why she was angry at him (LN v7-8), is similar when Hachiman also was angry at her (LN v5-6). About how humans placed expectations to other people by believing in the image of that person, and ended up misunderstand that that is the essence of that person. The ending of this misunderstanding is the believer will be betrayed by the image that the believer and the actor helped one another created it.
So I will conclude that Yukino was angry because she thought that…
——Even Hikigaya Hachiman tells lies (makes her believe in his image).
Even so, I didn’t answer why her flame of anger and disappointment were delivered to him continuously yet.
How different they managed their own emotions.
Do you still remember I ever mentioned that they helped one another created the image and was betrayed by this image? Both of them are the same in this issue. However, they are different in terms of past/experience. But I will explain about why these factors decided everything later. Let’s see “a notice” that showed how different Hachiman and Yukino managed their emotions first. That notice is in anime Zoku ep3.
When she felt she was betrayed by him (aka his image), because he did something that crushed her belief regard to “his image”. So when he gave some ideas how to solve Isshiki’s problem, she rejected his ideas “clearly”, but actually, she didn’t reject his comments, but “Hachiman himself”. That’s why she tried to solve this problem with her own way, with her own “correctness”. This is how she “pushed him away”, because she can’t believe in him anymore. This caused she created the big wall between her and him, while acted more gentle when she talked with Yuigahama.
It’s not different from when he was angry to her, after he realized she was involved in the car accident, but lied to him that she never knows him before. But in her case, she showed her anger and disappointment to him (ep3-4) stronger than when he showed the same feelings to her (ep10), while he tried to hold his negative feelings because he also blamed himself to believe in her image, but his anger leaked and reached her sometimes.
Then why were her anger and disappointment “so stronger” than his?
First reason – channels
Actually, I should not use the word “stronger” because maybe negative emotions of both of them would not be different. But when we see her emotions are stronger than Hachiman’s, it’s because these emotions were released in single path, while his emotions were released in two paths. What do I mean? Because when anyone did mistake (especially big mistake), they will find who is responsibility for this.
- In case of Hachiman, he is mostly to blame for misunderstanding in Yukino’s image. But he also blamed her who made him misinterpreted.
- In case of Yukino, since we never see her monologue (except in LN v10), I would not be sure how she thought when she saw him betrayed her belief, but when I saw her blame him only, I assume that she didn’t blame herself mostly, or even never blame she was at fault to create his image in her mind. Because how strong her emotions that she deliver to him even other people froze when they saw her overwhelming anger.
However, it is still possible that she also blamed herself. And I can imagine if she blamed herself to believe in him. And it’s his natural for him to consider about this quietly, so he didn’t show his emotions much. But if it’s his natural, when I look back at Yukino when she was angry, that’s not her natural. So I can toss about “natural” away.
Unlike Hachiman who is an expert in looking for reasons why he did wrong and professional in searching for the most correct answer why he did wrong (from many event he ever encountered, especially, “the certain past during the middle school”). In case if you want to know about “the certain past” of him that made him can realize who should blame the most when the mistake happened, you can explore more in LN v8 (hint: that new character) or Oregairu Analysis – And Then, Yukinoshita Haruno Launched Operation Fire Doughnut! (Part 2).
But the possibility that Yukino would be aware that it’s also her fault to create and misunderstand his image as his essence, was destroyed, because the certain incident in the certain cafe in Yahari Zoku anime (season 2) ep4, the cold war between Yukinoshita sisters. Words of that person made me reconsider about this issue and ended up doubting it.
“The simple truth” of Haruno made her little sister left from the cafe. I think Yukino reviewed Haruno’s words and understood what she was going to do (push hard duty to Hayama). That’s why she left. But what I want to point at is, when Hachiman warned her that her method is like making the puppet to be the scp, she still insisting to do it. But when her big sister pointed out that she is going to make others do hard work while she didn’t need to dirty her hands, Yukino seems got it and gave up discussing with Hayama. What made her listen to her sister, but not Hachiman?
I’m not sure myself either because Yukino never talk about this, but I think Haruno’s comparison made her realized it’s not correct method, or should I say, consider feelings of others. When Hachiman warned her it’s not fine to use her method, I think Yukino would know it’s difficult, but she would believe it will be all right because she intent to help the candidate. So she ended up convincing herself so she didn’t see the candidate will be the puppet as he stated. But when Haruno said she is like their mother who forced people (both of them know well how their mother do that), she realized it’s as her sister said. Because when she looked at Hayama, his reaction confirmed what her older sister stated.
I don’t think Haruno’s comparison is the only factor that made Yukino aware what she almost do it, Hayama’s existence that was standing there is the symbol of the victim that really exist, not just remarks of Hachiman or Haruno. But I wrote TL until now because I want you to know that her awareness is the important that made everything happened. Blaming Hachiman but hardly blame she was at fault, or believe her method is right but not consider she will hurt others.
But I didn’t tell Yukino is bad girl or want to blame her at all, but I will conclude that her awareness is what she lacks, while Hachiman used his own mistake to be important lessons. When I come to the conclusion that Yukino lacks awareness but Hachiman has high awareness, I don’t want to compare both of them, but comparison will help me look for why Yukino can’t be aware her own mistakes.
in-depth analysis focused on their words & thoughts.
After I decoded remarks and thoughts of Yukino and Hachiman carefully, I can’t believe how the author can think such extreme supreme difficult things like this. I’m satisfied after got the result but I’m so tired.
When I need to look for what made she can’t be aware her own mistake, I need to return to LN v6 (anime season1 ep12), after the festival has ended, Yukino told Hachiman that
“That’s right. I do not lie, after all.”
Her words made him decide to tell her (although he didn’t specify clearly that it’s about the car accident) very important things that
“No, it’s fine if you want to lie. I do it all the time.” “It’s not a big deal if you lie about not knowing something. It’s more ridiculous to not be okay with it only to force it later.”
(I will translate the meaning of his words below in blue and red colors.)
I think Hachiman is the only one among students that realized she lied. The car accident is the clear example (she said she didn’t know him). And when he realized later that she who always honest and correct, lied to him at the beginning that is opposite from her image that he and her helped creating it. So although he felt bad at her action, but he thought he needed to talk this issue with her in private. If she can lie clearly, he will not misunderstand about her again. Actually, he can accept if “Yukinoshita Yukino” lied and accepted she ever lied. That’s why he tried to tell her that to pretend she didn’t lie but lied already, so she “bent the truth” (the truth that she lied) with “similar truth” to cover lying, is more ridiculous.
All of these are hidden meaning of Hachiman’s words above. ⇑
His monologue below, when he was reviewing what happened and how she lied to him, is clearly that he realized how she told lie to him but insist she didn’t. He really hoped his good will will reach her if he told her clearly.
That’s why it was only after that accident that Yukinoshita Yukino knew Hikigaya Hachiman.
But even so, she said she didn’t know me (lie). Not once did she ever bring up the accident. And this was the girl who would clearly say more things than she really needed to.
But his effort was not successful.
Because from her response in the near future, made him disappointed. She still continue.
When she listened to his opinions, she tried her best to find similar truth, so she can bend the truth (the truth that she lied to him back then) with it, and it will become “another truth” instead. (confused?)
- So she can defend herself and tell that another truth at the same time.
- or this is like the system that works automatically.
- or 1 + 2, and I also think it’s this choice, her response against the truth of Hachiman is like the system that works automatically, to defend herself from his words that has his good will but for her, although she knows well that he has good will, his words is not different from making her feel uncomfortable. That’s why in order to contradict that she is not wrong, she must do the same thing to maintain the her image, “she is right”.
I mean, she was defending herself by giving him “the truth”.
“…I’m not lying. I mean, I didn’t know you at all.”
“Know him” in Hachiman’s meaning is know his name and what happened (injured).
But “know him” in Yukino’s meaning is know his essence, the real Hachiman (aka his image she created recently).
got it?
And when she found this truth can be used to defend herself, she can tell “another truth”. When she told him another truth, she can say it confidently, because she didn’t lie anymore. As the result, she still lied that she didn’t know him, by bending the truth (know him) and giving him another truth instead. What is another truth?
She gazed at me, straight on, and smiled.
“…But now, I know you (know the real Hachiman).”
…
Hachiman surrendered… Because although he realized just now that she did the same again, he can’t go against or change her anymore. Her beautiful outer appearance when she told another truth made him yield. In anime ep12, he didn’t do anything but blush, after he saw her beauty, so I never notice his disappointment that his effort to make her stop what she ever did and did just now is useless. But in LN v6, he surrendered her beauty so he can’t make her change her mind. Therefore, the time is over, since Yuigahama came to the club room, so the private time to say something serious, has ended.
But will she know or not that winning him by doing the same mistake again, will lead her to the “another mistake” instead?
Because although he tried to give her very important lesson, it turned out her old habit activated (being overly obsessed with victory, unwilling to yield or unable to bear any loss). This concluded that she was not aware her own mistake (not think over). The next question is…
why are she “so persistent to be honest” although she was not like that?
To find the answer of this question, we should return to her own timeline again. I notice that every time she tried to hide the truth that she lied, she was frightened.
In the first episode in anime ss1, she told him she didn’t know him because she didn’t want him remember she was also got involved the car accident that caused him injured. Because she didn’t want him blame her because that car took her to the school.
To cover the truth, she stay silence and escaped from the club room because she didn’t want him and Yuigahama (who she stated that they are victims of that accident) unite blaming it’s her fault they suffered.
Both clues presented her deepest emotion that is the origin why she must be honest.
Then, the next question is…
Why is Yukino so scared to not be honest?
If my assumption that was interpreted from clues above, is correct, I think her own fear embed to the point she must be the honest, can’t let other people notice she lied. So I think if her fright was rooted to the point she need to do that, since there are no any timeline in the story (LN v1-11) to jump back anymore, so It’s certain that her overwhelming fear came from her own experience.
aka her own past.
Since the author, WW didn’t reveal who/what/why/when and how that related to her deep and extreme fear, what I can do is just guess only. Her family or other people around her. And if I need to choose, I would bet both. Because in the present, she covered her lying from other people. Maybe the certain incident during the late elementary period, is the one that is the most suspicious? And her family is not good environment, they expect their children, but since I don’t know about her family more than Haruno’s complaint or when Mrs.Yukinoshita is worried about Yukino, I would drop this for now.
So I’ll leave those questions for now, and I will say that awareness her own worth and mistakes will be the main key of Yukino in the future. I really hope Hachiman’s direction that came from his good will, will reach her someday, along with her friend Yuigahama who always wants to reach her, (as Hiratsuka-sensei hopes both of them will reach her someday). If she is like my assumption that I will not write in any analysis, is correct as I suspect, I will say that her condition is not easy to heal. It’s like tough shell that although Hachiman tried to talk to her reasonable, with calm, and in private place, that is correct, but it’s not enough because she never is aware what she always does, will bring the bad result.
Oregairu Analysis – [Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku Season 2 Ep 12-13]
Now I think I understand already, bit by bit, reasons why her older sister must stand at another side with her although she tried to help Yukino, and why she informed him (LN v10) that what Yukino is doing to him is not because of “trust”, and why she said it’s sinister. But what I realized is just tiny fragment only.
But in the present, please don’t forget I’m writing reasons why Yukino stays angry at Hachiman. The cause of this is what is opposite from the awareness, that made her can’t find out or notice that herself is at fault if she was the one creates, misunderstands and is betrayed by image of people.
And when she stays angry at Hachiman that effected to other people, I will say that it’s not Hachiman, Yuigahama, Isshiki or Hiratsuka-sensei only that got this impact,
“a certain person” also hurt from her unawareness too.
If you want to know who is that certain person, and how it will affect to her/him, I recommended you to read Oregairu Analysis – The Conclusion of Yukinoshita Haruno’s Plan (Operation Fire Doughnut) & The TRUTH(s) behind Hayama Hayato’s Sacrifice for Hikigaya Hachiman (Part 3), that will be published soon.
