Oregairu Analysis – Why Does Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃)’s Mother Want to Cancel Prom? [Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. Season 3]

This Oregairu analysis will explain why Yukinoshita sisters’ mother, Mrs.Yukinoshita, comes along with her oldest daughter, Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) to Sobu High School and cancel the senior prom.

But before you will read this, I strongly recommend you to read LN v6,10-12, Yahari anime ss1 ep10-12, ss2 ep11 or manga -Monologue- v6,8,10-12 up before proceeding.

Before you will read this post, I recommend you to check out LN v10-12 or related posts below. Because these events have some link with Mrs.Yukinoshita’s action, especially the arranged marriage.

2. Why does Hayama want himself & Hikigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) equal? (and his silent plan)

In LN v12, the prom in Oregairu story is a school event to celebrate senior students that it is held on March and it is organized by Isshiki Iroha (一色いろは) and co. But all of a sudden (in Hachiman’s point of view) Mrs.Yukinoshita, mother of one of the volunteers, Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃), and Haruno come to school. Their mother intends to annul this event and explains the reasons. She forc- umm let Haruno who is an alumni to support her opinions. Therefore it seems they researched this prom, and Mrs.Yukinoshita’s tempo in this discussion is perfect, has no any weakness. Her skill reminds me of the golden barrier of Orochi in the game Ok@mi…

But!!

Although things that are so perfect, it appears that she leaves an important hint.

Yukinoshitas’ Mom Can’t Refuse “Them”.

Even if her reasons are very reasonable but I doubt why she tries so hard to stop the school event such as this prom,

1. to the point she brings her daughter to be her ally.
2. to the point they researched this issue.
3. and if she thinks it is not the good idea to arrange this event, other school events should be reviewed too. Each event has its own risk. But she doesn’t mind other school events.

That’s why I doubt her objective so I reviewed her words because I believe that I might find any clue. Finally, I found one.

“Because I am part of the PTA as well… Also, if your father’s companion asked, we cannot refuse it. …You do understand that, right?”

Certainly. People who want to cancel this prom is the companion of Yukinoshita’s dad. When I get this hint, the next step is to find out who they are. In reality, the politician has many companions and we would never find out who they are specifically. But this is LN so we can specify that the only companion of Yukinoshitas’ father in this story is Hayama’s parents. I know that they might not be the correct answer because it is still unreasonable but it doesn’t make sense because I don’t explain the connection and the reason yet. So I will explain why I suspect them.

ps. Since I don’t know Hayama’s father or mother or both are people Mrs.Yukinoshita refers, so I will call “Hayama’s parents”.

Therefore, from the quote of Yukinoshita’s mother above, makes us know that she and her husband (or even Haruno might be included) can’t refuse their request. So this clue proves that she is not the first person who decides this cancellation. The next question is why do they want to cancel it? Their motivation. School’s event is organized for graduate senior students. That’s why Hayama’s parents’ motivation and Mrs.Yukinoshita’s actions interest me. So I will connect hints by using related events, Hayama’s parents and Yukinoshitas mother are the center point. Related events are…

1. Their son
2. The involvement between Hayama and the prom.
3. The arranged marriage

1. Their son

If Hayama’s parents want to stop the event that has nothing to do with them, it means that their worry must have some link with their son who is studying at Sobu.

2. The Involvement between Hayama and the prom.

The next step is to find how their son (Hayama) gets involved with this event.

1. Since he is a student of Sobu, it’s normal if he will participate in this event. But he will join this event by his own will or he needs to answer people’ expectations, any paths don’t matter.
2. Since the student council president, Isshiki believes that Hayama will be the prom king definitely so she arranges this event to seize the equal position, the prom queen.

Normally, parents should not feel bad if their kid will join this prom and they would be proud if he will be elected to be the king. So even if Hayama will get involved with this prom, I don’t see why his parents request Yukinoshitas’ parents to cancel prom. But when I consider an important event that will happen soon, I start to understand why they are worried. That event is the next subtopic.

3. The arranged marriage

If you read my post about the arranged marriage (or the engagement), this is the important event that changes and explains everything. This event is what Yukinoshitas and Hayama’ parents agree that their oldest children will get married. And from adult’s worry toward this prom, we can predict that it is the high possibility that this marriage will be announced or happen soon (I think it would be announced in the same month, March). Because I considered in the same post that there are people in the college congrats Haruno for some reason and some of them invites her to celebrate all night (in LN v12). This incident reflects another point of view (how they (men) regret that she will get married soon.) so they decide to “celebrate all night”. So this hint in v12 proves that this marriage will be announced/held soon even if Hayama doesn’t graduate from high school yet.

If the arranged marriage will happen soon, it can explain why adults want to cancel prom. Because Hayama’s son would be chosen to be the prom king and he will be partnered with the other girl (who might be the prom queen if he is voted to be the king) but the problem is that girl is not Haruno (because she graduated from this school), his bride-to-be.

At this point, I think you would see how it becomes the “big” problem. And it can explain why Yukinoshitas’ parents accept their companion’s request. Normally, although both families are close, Hayama’s parents should not ask the higher class with social and political power like Yukinoshita to stop the school event except the problem will impact Yukinoshita family too or they (Hayama’s parents) can’t solve this case by themselves. If this prom continues, one thing that will be affected is their images.

For aristocracies, the image and people’ opinions toward them are very important. So if Hayama will be elected to partner with another girl, it is not difficult to imagine that his activities will be shared via social media in the certain device. And people in prom will witness their son and another girl (who is not Haruno) with formal costumes are walking arm in arm happily, are taken photos (that I will explain later why taking photos is very risky for these two families), and dance together. These photos and many witnesses will cause problems for their children and both families.

In conclusion, accompanying with another girl despite he will get married soon is not very proper, let alone their actions will be recorded in photos and uploaded in SNS. And even Yukinoshita parents realize how those photos will cause big problems. That’s why they can’t refuse their companion’s request, they understand well that they need to prevent it at all costs and the best solution is canceling the prom only (I will explain why this is the only choice later).

Therefore, if the arranged marriage will not be announced/held soon, the situation that Hayama will accompany with other girl will not be the problem because of the time gap between these two events are spaced.

So all of these are related events that drive Hayama’s parents to ask their companion to cancel prom.

Other Hints that support this assumption.

1. The prom would be stopped in this year only.

Hiratsuka Shizuka (平塚 静)‘s words are interesting to consider.

“It’s not like there aren’t any methods but… if everyone plans to hold a prom next year too, I think it’s better for me not to interfere with it.”

With her opinion above, it is possible that…

• she knows why Mrs.Yukinoshita stops prom. If she knows the detail, it means that Haruno told her. Maybe she told her when they hung out somewhere because I don’t see why others people in the inner circle such as Hayama or Yukinoshitas’ mother will tell her except Haruno, who is her friend and she is suffering because her future is decided without her own decision.
• or she suspects that her friend’s mother intends to cancel prom in this year only despite Yukinoshita’s mom didn’t specify the duration (how can she tell everyone that she needs to cancel it in this year only? They would question her which is troublesome). But sensei can sense that this effect is not long-term. Maybe she thinks it’s weird for the important person like Mrs.Yukinoshita to stop student’s event and suspects that Mrs.Yukinoshita would expect “something” from this canceling.

2. Check The Assumption With The Explanation of Yukinoshitas’s Mom.

When I get this assumption that Hayama’s parents ask them (Yukinoshita’s parents) to stop the prom and they also agree that it’s the problem, I will check this assumption with Mrs.Yukinoshita’s explication if they are consistent.

“I suggest that the prom has to be cancelled. We have received concerns from parents about the photos uploaded to the internet. …Yes, they appear to be very worried that it is not very high school-student-like.”

“Of course, I believe all the parents are thinking various things about it. It’s not like we are going to disallow and restrict everything. It’s just that they are worried after all. Especially about the inundation of commotion throughout the SNS, harming one’s reputation…

“But there are, after all, negative suggestions which is why I believe that there is no need to force yourself to do this. You don’t want someone to rain on your parade if others try to publicly find fault given the current state of society.“

From these underlined texts, I think Yukinoshitas’ mother doesn’t lie to others but she doesn’t specify many things either. Such as who are those parents, harming whose’s reputation and what the parade/plan is. The listeners who don’t know her true objective, would not know what she is meaning…

So I will TL like this: ⇓

We (she and her husband (or even Haruno)) have received concerns from parents (Hayama’s parents) about the photos uploaded to the internet.

harming their one‘s reputation…

You (She and co.) don’t want someone to rain on your (their or her) parade (that is the arranged marriage).

Drinking alcohol, or problems that happened in the past are things that she uses to hide a leaf in the forest. If there are no any forests, she needs to grow one to hide that leaf. That’s why her explanation makes others misinterpret that she got complaints from other parents as PTA president and was aware of those problems so she comes to cancel the prom despite this is the personal issue. I think she considered that they (Hiratsuka-sensei, student council president and others don’t need to know her true objective.

3. The Difference Between The Prom & Party

Another remark is she doesn’t mind if they will hold the limiting party.

“Of course, I do not mind if you will carry out the party with moderation.”

So if we look for the difference between the normal party and prom, the prominent point of prom is what she wants to restrain. It is not like she wants to control the unpleasant behaviors of students as she tries to present. So it can conclude that she isn’t worried about alcohol and others either that it means that these problems are the forest that is planted for hiding something, to not let others know her true objective and to make this cancellation happens.

 

WHY/How Are Hayama’s Parents So Worried?

Although I presented parents’ worry and related hints that explain why Yukinoshitas’ mother cancels prom and I thought it is enough, Hachiman’s monologue in LN v12 helps me understand the worry of Hayama and Yukinoshita’ parents clearly. His point of view makes me have no any doubt.

Hachiman’s monologue about participants’ poses in photos.

1. when they are wearing tuxedo or beautiful dresses during prom promotion, they talk to even strangers. Hachiman thinks it’s more like a wedding party.
2. After the work team took photos and recorded video when participates are dancing to promote prom in the official site, participates use their phones to share their work via LINE (that would happen in the same day?). When Hachiman sees photos in that app in the next day, there are some photos that boys and girls wearing formal suits, are leaning on each other or their faces are really close.

When I combine these two clues, the arranged marriage, and SNS together, they help us imagine adults’ concern despite they will announce/hold their children’ marriage soon. Imagine when…

• their son and a girl (who is not his future bride) are wearing formal suits are leaning on each other or their faces are so close.
• And these photos will be shared via SNS.
• Therefore the prom king and queen positions, their popularity, and the high status of his & Yukinoshita’ families in the society will multiply the power of sharing.

I will not say that all of these will not happen to Hayama for real because Mrs.Yukinoshita can prevent it already as you would know after read LN v12. But I want to explain that those photos are the main cause that lead to adults’ uneasiness because Hayama and his partner (who is not Haruno) would pose like that and their activities will be recorded by the certain device if he participates this school event (and are chosen to be prom king).

Because of Hachiman’s monologue during preparing prom, makes me imagine how Hayama and his partner will pose in those photos, they would not be different from a couple in the wedding party.

Other elements such as Hayama & partner’ popularity, outstanding positions like prom king & queen, the high status of those two families, and the power of SNS are other factors that make this problem is not the thing that can be solved so easily once it happens.

 

This is my Oregairu analysis to explain why Yukinoshita’s mom cancels prom and every hints I found. Adults’ worry, the marriage, the connection between the inner circle, Hayama and Yukinoshita and the prom, clues in words of Mrs.Yukinoshita, and Hachiman’s point of view make me reach the answer and who is her husband’s companion.

Although we know that her husband’s companion requests them to solve this problem that will descend to their children and families in the near future, it is too soon to conclude this case since… it is possible that person is at large… Who is the mastermind? Anyway, in the next post, I will reveal the mastermind behind this prom’s cancellation. If you think that character in your mind would be the originator, feel free to write your answer.
