This Oregairu analysis will explain why Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人) wants himself and Hikigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) to be like that during the Annual Winter Event Marathon Race (Oregairu Zoku. Ep11). The answer to this question connects with “the secret plan” of Hayama that his crush and other characters are involved with this plan too as usual. Also other related topics.

In this analysis, I will reveal many things about Hayama that I can sort like this.
- Why does he want Hachiman to be equal?
- His silent plan
- The meaning in his words in the after party.
- The reason why he says “So I will not do as you say.”

Hayama’s intention about this issue is what I ever suspected and tried to consider, but I left it because I agreed with a comment of some people that explained that he wants Hachiman to realize the importance of himself. Or Hayama wants Hachiman to understand the feeling of other people who care for him, people who will hurt when see him suffer. And I admit that I didn’t know about Hayama much, that’s why I didn’t suspect anything.
Until I found out unbelievable truths that changed everything. The first truth is the arranged marriage (or engagement) between Hayama and his crush, Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) that is his career path in the future and he tries to hide it from everyone. And the second truth was written in the second memorandum in LN v10.
These two facts lead to two truths that surprised me more. The reason why he wants Hachiman to be equal. And his secret plan that I will call it “the silent plan” because people around him never realize this even if the story reached LN v12. Even Haruno doesn’t know this scheme despite she can understand his actions completely in LN v8 but I am not surprised because he avoids to let everyone know.
In fact, the word “equal” has a hidden truth that Hayama picked so Hachiman will not realize his ill will toward him. So what is it?
This post will reveal as its title said, but before you will continue to read this, the love story of Hayama started in LN v4 and this story still remains until LN v12. However, if you don’t want to waste time, I provided the shortcut (that I am not sure if this is the shortcut or not), I recommend you to read these posts that relate with his love story. Because reading this post only, will confuse you instead (but I will not force you to read them if you are sure that you can follow).
Everything that happens in this universe, has the factor and cause. Even Hayama’s story is not different. So I sort related seven subtopics about Hayama’s love (LN v4-10). They are the shortcut that will help you understand his story before you will read the analysis in this post.

Then if you know the love story of Hayama in LN v4-11, you can see that there are three main characters who involve in this circle, that are himself, his crush (Haruno) and his love rival.
The eight subtopic
If you read all seven subtopics above, especially the 7th subtopic, you will know the old despair and the new hope of Hayama. So the next move of Hayama is the result that is the consequence of the seventh subtopic or the second memorandum in LN v10. Because he got the knowledge from the book and he knows that his love rival, Hachiman can help him gain the attention from his crush, Haruno. After I considered his plan, I will call it the silent plan because there are no any characters realize this plan even the story reached LN v12 already. Even Haruno and Hachiman don’t know about it.

If we consider the timeline, start at the second memorandum in LN v10 and his silent plan that is the next result, it appears that this memorandum happens after the dinner appointment between Yukinoshita and Hayama families. So it means that he would know about the arranged marriage between him and Haruno from his parents already. Because even Haruno knows about this before they will join the dinner. You can see her weird attempt to call her little sister despite she knows that her sister doesn’t want to go.
Oregairu Analysis – Why does Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) Call Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃) Over?

Moreover, the second memorandum happens before the marathon race that Hayama talks to Hachiman that he wants both of them to be equal. I bring this event up because this is the first time he talks about his silent plan too (of course Hachiman doesn’t understand what Hayama means) because Hachiman is the only one who tries to understand about him (his career path and even himself) to the point he reviewed how he lives in the school almost accurately (that I will explain why I think Hachiman explains about Hayama almost correctly later) and brings his conclusion to him.

This timeline helps me see three steps, his suffering, the cause of the suffering and his solution. And if his plan is successful, the arranged marriage between him and her that will happen in the future will become the everlasting victory.
Now Oregairu story reached LN v12, so I will inform you first that his silent plan was successful already (??) during the chocolate making event in LN v11 (I will explain why I think the result of his plan happens in this event later.) To explain Hayama’s plan, I will arrange like these.

Actually, if you read my Yahari analysis: the second memorandum, you would know what are his objective and the important factor.
1. Objective
Hayama’s expectation is to gain Haruno’s attention. And when I analyzed the second memorandum, it appears that he wants her to look at him, understand him, and he doesn’t mind if he will be admonished or be looked down upon by her (that is his thought in the memorandum).
2. The important factor
Hayama found out how to make his desire come true from his book and he refers to that person in the memorandum who can “help” him. So, to find out which character is the one who he mentions, I will connect two clues, [the person who is sensitive evils of people] and [this scene].
Yes, the important factor for Hayama’s plan is Hachiman, as usual… And I will explain why I think he is vict- umm “the chosen one” for Hayama’s scheme.
The first reason why Hachiman becomes the chosen one because Hayama knows well that Haruno is interested in him clearly. So to make her change her feeling toward him that we can call it anything, “trust, faith, confidence or even lo- (that Hayama is sure that this is her feeling)”, it’s normal that Hachiman must be included in Hayama’s project.
And this is my own assumption that is very surprising that I also found out in the same memorandum. Hayama can’t accept the truth behind Haruno’s words at that time ⇓ This is the beginning because if he throws in the towel, his silent plan and his attempt to make the guy beside him ⇓ reach the same level as him, would not happen. When that thing happened, this thing happens.
Now, when we know that Hachiman is the factor for Hayma’s plan, then he must break Haruno’s trust toward Hachiman. Since he said that he wants Hachiman and himself to be equal, then it means he believes that he and Hachiman are not equal in her eyes.
The beginning of her trust toward Hachiman in Hayama’s eyes (not our or Haruno’s eyes because I’m analyzing Hayama’s thought so I need to think how he thinks that he and Hachiman are not equal via his own point of view) is, she met a person who has the different point of view toward the society (in LN v4) and Hayama witnessed how Hachiman’s method can save the girl who looks like Yukino and has the similar problem with her that Hayama couldn’t and can’t save them. And Hachiman’s effort during the cutural festival that went against the bad society or bad people can gain more attention from his crush. This is just some part of Hayama’s inferiority complex toward his rival. I need to show you too that there are many times Hayama compares himself with Hachiman and Haruno’s interest toward Hachiman not him are the factors Hayama thinks he and his enemy are not equal.
Nevertheless, he found out the solution, how to gain her attention from his book.
I am not sure what knowledge he gains from that book, but his intention to [make him and Hachiman be equal] and [the scene below] are the important clues to look for the answer because Haruno’s thought toward Hachiman in the image below is what Hayama is aiming. He wants her to know that both of them (him and Hachiman) are not different or he want her to see the truth behind Hachiman’s mask (yes, he has things he hides from everyone). The true nature of Hachiman that is like himself (Hayama), the true nature that she can’t content of it.
And of course, she witnesses it.
3. How to make it happen.
3.1 Let Haruno know the truth behind Hachiman’s mask
Info from his book shows him the way to destroy her trust toward his love rival. And what he intends to do is like “the disclosure” to his crush. But the next question what does he need to reveal? The answer is “the similitude” between himself and Hachiman.
So we will return to all the reasons why Haruno isn’t pleased with Hayama. And they must be similar to Hachiman’s case. The next issue is when does Hayama realize the similitude between himself and Hachiman? I am sure the first time when he knows about the hidden desire of Hachiman that is not different from his, is LN v7, when he is talking with Hachiman at the riverside in Kyoto, he is surprised the new truth after Hachiman says something that shows how he also feels the same.
When Hayama realizes that Hachiman is emotionally involved with him, he starts to suspect that maybe even Hachiman’s attitude is not different from his, they have the same feeling, own the same thing (the relationship they cherish) and don’t want to let anything change it. Because it’s no way Hachiman will condole with his (Hayama) situation if his mind has no these things. But this is what Hayama is suspecting only. He has no evidence that Hachiman is like he is thinking or not.
Until Hachiman “stops” Tobe to confess his feeling to Ebina. From Hayama’s point of view, Hachiman also wants his treasure to not change and doesn’t want to lose it so he decided to do that. Hachiman’s effort is the indirect effort to “stop” Yuigahama to confess her feeling to him because of what I explained earlier. I mean, he is afraid of her action will change what he likes (the peaceful relationship within the service club) that is the result of listening to three people who are afraid of their treasure will be vanish because of Tobe. This reason affects Hachiman who “absorbs” their suffering, their fears until he lets his own fear get the better of him that leads to his final action (you know what it is).
I am the fearrrrrrr.
ps. Then it means Hayama also knows Yuigahama will confess to his rival? …Well, I am not sure.
This is how Hayama realized that he and Hachiman are not different, they have that hidden desire.
3.2 He will use this info “Yukino’s attachment toward Hachiman”.
Why Is Haruno Confident Hachiman Will Make Yukino Come Out?
This is another factor that I suspect Hayama uses this for his scheme. To sum it up, he uses two factors (the truth of Hachiman & Yukino’s attachment toward him). I will say for now that he knows her truth in LN v10 (anime ss2 ep10) and Haruno is the one who gives him this info unintentionally.
I will say for now that what happens at that time, makes him realize something. Since Haruno can summon her sister by us-, umm, arranging Hachiman to talk to her sister. And her sister changes her mind and come out. What I want to say is we can’t know Hayama’s thought at that time but Haruno’s action and its result are important knowledge for his plan latterly. If I need to assume, he knows Yukino clings to Hachiman because Haruno uses this knowledge in front of him (unintentionally because Haruno never know about the silent plan, let alone she will know that her “younger brother” will use this clue to his plan). And I suspect that Hayama understands how this truth means (Is Yukino’s attachment good or bad?) because he was the one who Yukino ever attach.
Why do I think there is Yukino’s attachment toward Hayama in the past?
- The conversation between and Hachiman – In ep11, he tells Hachiman about Yukino’s behavior (she doesn’t follow Haruno’s shadow but Hachiman’s instead)
- Haruno’s announcement in ep12 makes me know that it would occur at that time.
Since he evaluates the data (what he saw in ep10), it is the result that makes him can tell Hachiman about Yukino latterly (ep11). Well, after I found out how Haruno can summon Yukino by using this info and Hayama also witnesses this, we will see how and when he knows the truth between Hachiman (who he is gonna use) and Yukino. Hachiman and Yukino’ reactions make Hayama who is watching them, can confirm what he suspects (Before, he doubts if Yukino will come).
And Haruno’s announcement in ep12 (Yukino ever gave chocolates to him) will help us see that Yukino also did this to Hayama.
When we connect these truths, we will understand how and when Hayama realizes Yukino’s action.
Since he was ever close to this girl, he knows what this truth means. With two factors I explained, I can see Hayama’s presentation. That is Hachiman’s truth inside the circle.
3.3 How do Hayama make Haruno see Hachiman’s truth?
Q: And the next question is, how will Hayama reveal this info to Haruno?
A: The answer is he does nothing (huh?). Yes, he doesn’t need to do anything but acts as the observant. He just waits to see her witness what Hachiman is doing.
Q: And the third question is which environment that effects and attracts her the most?
A: The answer is wherever Hachiman and Yukino stay. What Hayama needs to do is waiting for this Onee-san witness the interaction between Hachiman and her younger sister by herself. It’s true Haruno already knows about Yukino’s attachment toward Hachiman but what she doesn’t realize yet is his hidden desire that he is worried she will know his truth. Yes, he is uneasy since she told him about her sister’s thought and he must know she wants to solve this case but since he is scared their relationship between him and Yukino (again) will …shake or worse, he is worried this smart woman will know his desire, the desire to stable, not change anything. On the other hand, Hayama thinks differently, wants Haruno to watch Hachiman’s documentary.
I got time to kill while I’m waiting for the 100% cocoa dark chocolate.
Someday, his rival’s truth will be revealed via his own action. It’s like the reflection image that Haruno will realize the similitude between himself and his love rival that I ever mentioned earlier, how they protect what they value highly and to do so, they need to ignore the unpleasant or uneasy truth within their groups.
Since Hayama found out that Yukino doesn’t follow Haruno’s shadow anymore since anime ss2 ep10 and announces in ep11, that is the catalyst that will affect Haruno’s mind more because he considers how much she will feel if she sees how Hachiman reacts to Yukino’s dependency case in order to protect what he cherishes (relationship).
So before the chocolate-making event will begin, Hayama has a chance to talk with Hachiman again. It seems he knows why Hachiman will be coming to taste chocolate, that makes him try to hold the feeling that wants to laugh at Hachiman. But the small laugh betrays his attempt. Therefore Hachiman feels irritated again because the person in front of him can see through everything.
Since Hayama understands, he can share the feeling to another side, and in this case, the certain feeling after he knows that both of them are not different. But like always, he manages to stop himself from revealing anything more than that, because if he can’t control himself and expose what another side is doing more than this, Hachiman might correct himself. If that happens before Haruno has a chance to witness that documentary, his silent plan will fail soundlessly.
4. The result
This perfect plan of Hayama is successful during the chocolate making in LN v11, what he needs to do is just wait and observe his target. when his target (Haruno) approaches the red zone that his assistant and her sister are interacting. Things she sees through are not only what Hachiman was doing or how a bowl could make noises only, but everything.
Got it?
What happens within this area is really complex and hard to understand. And it’s more difficult to know how Haruno is thinking. But to understand her thought, you can do by looking at each character via her own point of view and analyze their actions and reactions toward the other two characters. Despite Yuigahama Yui (由比ヶ浜 結衣)‘s case is not difficult to understand, to know what Haruno is thinking when she realizes Hachiman’s mind is very extremely difficult except I will include his own discomfort during this event and Haruno’s expectation toward him (solve her sister’s problem) to this consideration.
But it would not be impossible to find the answer if we link these two clues [what Hayama wants her to know about Hachiman] and [her opinion about Hachiman after this situation], the final answer is she realizes truths that both of them (Hachiman and Haruno) are not walking on the same road (solve a certain problem) and it appears that he is not like she always believes. So to sum it up, his faith toward him starts to be withdrawn. And these truths lead to another truth that her attempt to support him so he will solve Yukino’s condition (begins at LN v10) is one of the reasons WW begins to show she is drunk latterly in LN v12, drunk because of the misunderstanding, drunk because of the boredom (I’m waiting for the image from anime ss3).
Despite Haruno witnessed everything, it appears that she wants to be sure about what she saw just now, I assume. Because she is still observing the trio. But the result from the second observation is still the same… That’s why I can conclude that Hayama’s plan is successful at this point.
ps. The story in νn might not relate to things Haruno found out about Hachiman but I think the scene in νn (the ski event) [when she watches him worry about her sister and treats her very well], might be similar to the scene in the story [when she watches him comes to help her sister]. Then if my assumption is correct, WW tried to present these scenes to show things that are obscure? Maybe it’s something that Hachiman is doing to Yukino or/and Haruno’s thought when she is watching both of them. that lead to her dissuasion but he is trying to deny.
The more references, the more we can close up the truth. If only we don’t give up, we can understand what is going on during the sweet but dark chocolate-making event.
The good treatment is not a thing that should be stopped and people who try to stop are not someone who we should consider as good fellow. But if the whole of that treatment will lead to the misunderstanding, people who get involvement with this circle, need to bring this to the consideration. And this is one of reasons someone sacrifices herself that her manner originates from her emotion toward the person who is doing it. I will not side with her because all of her actions also reflects the attachment toward that boy, I can dare say that she believes in this boy so much but everything in this world are changeable, and for this case, nobody is perfect.
But her sister is precious and people expect her do things logically or even stop destroying the good things but most people’s action are driven by emotions. I don’t think she is perfect sister or perfect being or should answer Hachiman’s expectation by being the better sister because he is doing like that to Yukino. But no matter what happen, her love toward her sister since before the Oregairu story until now, never vary. So she has both sides in her own self, not different from other humans.
So this is the conclusion of the silent plan of Hayama and how he wants himself and Hachiman to be equal that he said during the marathon race. On the other hand, if he doesn’t say this hint, it’s no way I can realize that he is planning something again, because his plan this time is very silent, and he doesn’t need to do anything except controlling himself so Hachiman and Haruno will not notice it. Although the story reached LN v12, everyone who got involved with his scheme doesn’t suspect what he planed after all.
After you read this analysis, you might disagree with me because Hayama didn’t do anything about what happened within Hachiman’s circle. I agree but I agree in terms of his action but not his will. And I just want to show that he expects Haruno to do as the owner of the second memorandum wishes. That’s why I don’t think he is completely innocent in this case.
That “Laugh” Shows Me His True Feeling.
ps. This scene didn’t happen in anime Yahari ss2 ep12.
I found a clue that is very interesting. Even if it doesn’t confirm Hayama’s feeling but let me write my own comment about this. If you read LN v11, while Hachiman is giving up to introspect Yuigahama’s reaction after she caught the bowl.
Just as I let out yet another sigh, I seemed to feel that somewhere, someone was gently laughing away.
Before I realize about Hayama’s plan, I ever believed that “someone” is Haruno because she is the one who is observing the trio and laughing because she can’t believe things in front of her. However, after I found out that certain schemer, I began to reconsider about this issue again and my answer changed to you know who. Because Haruno is not the only one who is observing, there’s another one who is doing the same thing but he would not be watching the trio only, he is observing her and the trio.
And if I include [the scene that happened before this event – when he was trying to hold his laughing to Hachiman, before the chocolate making event will begin] to this consideration too, you can imagine how he is feeling while he is watching Haruno’s resentment toward the sight in front of her.
And does “somewhere” not imply that someone would not be near Hachiman?
If someone is gently laughing away, I think s/he would not be Haruno because this adjective is not consistent with her feeling at that time. Whoever is laughing like this, s/he would feel …very pleased with the scene but this person needs to hold her/his voice with all her/his might.
That is different from this image (…or maybe not).
So I will conclude that Hayama is laughing to Hachiman and satisfied because his crush sees what he wants her to see. Who will think that it is successful for real because of the idea from his book? This is just my opinion, but I think he would worship the author of that book and even that book itself after this incident. Also, he would be appreciated Hachiman’s kind support.
Review other events.
When we return to other events to find the consistent between these events and Hayama’s plan, I will categorize like this.
1. Hayama’s decralation
After He reveals his true feeling toward Hachiman during the marathon race, his words after this are very interesting because it connects with the latest rejection of Haruno in LN v8 and his monologue in the second memorandum. If you read his words at this point carefully, you will understand “the reason” and “how to” in his silent plan so he will be satisfied.
“I absolutely can’t stand it when I feel inferior to you.
That’s why I want you to be my equal.
That’s why I want to raise you up high, and that just might be it,
all so I can accept the things I lose to you in.”
In the third line ⇑, if you already read the second memorandum, it appears that Hayama knows himself very well, but when he tells to Hachiman that he wants to raise him up high, I don’t think we should interpret his words straightforwardly. Using such positive words like this will confuse Hachiman and even readers. How a certain author created these words is unbelievable.
In the last line is difficult to interpret. Then I will interpret as two opinions.
- I can TL that if he plans like this but he still loses, I think he would accept the truth.
- Or I can TL that if his plan is successful, he will let go all smashes in the past (why will he care about the formerly defeat if he gains the holy grail for real?). And I think this would be the correct one.
- Or he doesn’t think to accept the truth that he loses to him already so he provides this silent fight to change the reality. What he wants is just the one victory.
Personally, I belive in 3) because this is just like the result from his own impulse because of what happened in LN v8. Because he can’t accept her vague but direct rejection during the double date.
2. He will not lose to him.
During the marathon race, Hayama ever told to Hachiman that he will not lose. I can tell you that he doesn’t mean the marathon race at the present but “another race”. So this is how he will not “lose” to his love rival that he ever said before too. (How can Hachiman compete with him if Hayama doesn’t give him even a tiny chance? Let alone that he doesn’t tell his rival that there’s a loving race between both of them.)
When he runs and leaves his rival behind, also Hachiman collapses on to the floor, I feel that this scene is like… the visualization that will help us know the result between these two characters or what he is expecting, how Hayama will win and what will happen to Hachiman. I don’t see why that falcon man will lose if he starts the race but doesn’t tell his rival anything but unclear declaration only.
Another visualization or metaphor is the scene when Hayama is standing at the podium, awards the olive wreath that only the chosen one who is the successful commander during his triumph can wear, congratulated by folks while his rival is opposite, loses, injured, his clothes are stained and no one cares about his condition while the victor doesn’t need to put any risks…
This is one thing or the future that the author tries to tell us or you can interpret that this is one of ending among endings that Hayama is expecting it will happen to himself and his rival in the near future. However, I don’t say that it will be permanent thing either but it will just exist temporarily because if WW “fixed” genuine in advance, so I don’t believe that the story will end awfully like that either since it will not meet with the stratagem that is settled. Hayama’s dream would be as you can predict, everything will return to zero because of a certain person (and some people) definitely.
3. He will Survive With This Excuse.
The discussion between Hayama and Hachiman during the after party is very interesting because we will know why he doesn’t reveal his career path (that is arranged marriage or engagement) and how he will …respond to people around him in the school. He tells the reason already in this words.
He also tells Hachiman that he doesn’t want to cut off relationships (that are relationships between himself and the people around him in the school. So if you consider his words above, it means he prepares this excuse in advance so the relationships will not be cut off. He still maintains it although the truth about his career path will be announced in the very soon. When I consider his words above, this is his own excuse that I can interpret that…
“Picking the only possible option when there’s nothing else can’t be called my own decision.”
(TL: I will let people understand I need to marry (because this is the wish of my parents). This is not even my own decision.)
…
So it means that Hachiman’s explanation during the race is wrong? I think it’s up to your decision. But IMO, I think that he prepares his own reasonable excuse so relationships between himself and everyone will not be cut off. But if we mean the love relationship between himself and girls who love him, I think these relationships will be …I think you would know already.
If it is as he plans, he can choose any secondary career paths, and he is free from his own worry and the world because he will not need to be scared that any girls will approach him anymore (his trauma from the past still affects him, girls approached him and their envy are the beginning of his nightmare that made him lost that close relationship between himself and that person (you know who) as the final result).
If Miura Yumiko (三浦 優美子) can accept the truth and will stay in his clique or not, is not the problem anymore (and even Isshiki Iroha (一色いろは)‘s feeling too) because he is going to get the best shield, to be married (Please don’t retrace when he relies on both of them by giving them the gratitude so he can erase the rumor, I was upset already.) In the future, he doesn’t need to do anything to cease feelings of Yumiko and Isshiki, situations will cease everything for him.
And if things will be as Hachiman explained during the marathon race, all problems that other people throw to Hayama will disappear by keeping quiet. Therefore, it doesn’t matter if he will choose sciences, art, etc, any choices are as Hachiman suspects, it’s not different for Hayama since he can go well with any paths and he will be safe from other girls, from his own trauma, absolute freedom. He doesn’t need to us- umm let Yumiko assist him anymore.
So I think the explanations of Hachiman and Hayama are correct in their own perspective, but in Hayama’s case, he wants to… argue Hachiman that he is not like Hachiman thinks. However, I think Hachiman’s explanation still reflects Hayama’s egoistic very well. So when he tells Hachiman that he doesn’t hide his career path to cut off relationships, it is like … bending the negative truth (Hachiman’s opinion) to be a fine truth instead. Got it? For example, when I need to excuse, I will look for any positive reasons. I think Hayama’s words are really complex but I don’t think they are too difficult for us to understand.
That’s why when Hayama is sure that the relationships will not reset, I also agree because he prepares “that acceptable excuse” so his relationships will not return to the beginning point. In the case of Yumiko and Isshiki, I think you would know how their relationship between themselves and him will be in the future if he guarantees that relationships will not reduce to zero.
I will tell you that relationships reset = people/someone will change their feelings negatively, such as “like” → “hate”. He is trying to avoid this worst case with all his might. I suspect that “the past” when Yukino hurt because of girls’s ill will, still affect his mind and became his trauma until this day. That’s why he tries to prevent this so he can live in this society peacefully.

“That’s why, I’ll be the only one who doesn’t deny it.” “I need to show that there’s someone who isn’t forcing expectations.”
I will analyze these two lines together because it would be confusing if I pick the second line only. If the first line is like his cause, the second line is like… his response toward that cause… Let me decode these.

“That’s why, I’ll be the only one who doesn’t deny it.” “I need to show that there’s someone who isn’t forcing expectations.”
(TL: My parents (or/and Mrs.Yukinoshita) are people who makes me choose this only option, not me.
Nevertheless, I will accept this choice. (Actually, I am very pleased to pick this. Why do I need to deny this option if they want me to get marry with the one I want, this is the BEST ending!!).
But I will show everyone that I am not the one who choose this, adults did.)

…When we realize his il- umm will, we will know what he will do in the future and how he will maintain positive relationships with everyone as much as they can be. About people who force expectations to him, you can deduce that they are his parents or/and Mrs.Yukinoshita. Which choice is the correct answer is not important because if it’s Mrs.Yukinoshita wishes for the everlasting relationship with Hayama’s family, I feel that his parents also want this fascinating future too.
Haruno: That’s why I call Yukino-chan for help. (Haruno didn’t say this)
If he has this excuse, I don’t think people around him in the school can argue anything since he is like the good son who will respond expectations of adults despite this happens without his own willingness. Although some people will feel bad, he can predict that they will accept it and their relationships will not be resettled. I will not be surprised if his friends and others will congratulate him with smiles, happy ending. Do you think so, minna?

Hachiman: A prickling bitterness remained in the depths of my throat.
And all of these are the real answer of Hayama. So Hachiman replies back that he hates him too. I think this is like another visualization because this would be how he will say to Hayama if he realizes the truths. I think he would answer the same thing as he expresses his feeling to Hayama at this time too. What will happen in LN v14 is very exciting for me. But I also wish that Isshiki and Miura will realize his true nature so they will be released from his illusion. Although I am not sure if Miura will change her mind toward him or not but Isshiki is very smart and passed the most difficult situation already. IMO, I don’t want both of them hurt more than this.

The meaning of Hayama’s words, “That’s why I won’t do as you say.”
After I finished this analysis, I found the true meaning or the reason why Hayama answers to Hachiman like that. If we look via Hachiman’s point of view, he thinks that Hayama denies his clarification why he hides his career path from everyone that makes Hachiman conclude later that he will choose another choice, liberal art. But actually, what does Hayama mean exactly?
To know this answer, we need to look via Hayama’s point of view, not Hachiman. After Hachiman explains, do you still remember Hayama also says something too or not?
Hachiman’s clarification
“The sciences have less people in the first place, girls too. For now at least, you’d be able to move away from the problem that’s plaguing you. Besides, if your career path’s different, then you should be able to convince everyone and get away from them. If things naturally disappeared, then you can avoid hurting anyone as well as betraying someone’s expectations.” My voice grew huskier due to my dry throat, but I still managed to weave my words and added one final thing. “Your desired conditions can only be satisfied in this way.”
Hayama’s words
“I absolutely can’t stand it when I feel inferior to you. That’s why I want you to be my equal. That’s why I want to raise you up high, and that just might be it, all so I can accept the things I lose to you in.”
Hachiman’s explanation is like “doubt” while Hayama’s words are like “alibi”. After Hayama listens to Hachiman, I can notice that he is irritated but astonished in Hachiman’s sagacity at the same time because it’s 100% accurate. So he needs to say something to object Hachiman’s doubt. That’s why he tells Hachiman as yellow words above. Because they are also the truth but it’s the truth that is not make him feel bad while Hachiman’s exposition is opposite. Hayama expects his alibi will confute Hachiman’s. 2-1 = 1 (win!). This is the reason why he tells his rival like that ⇑, and that’s why he says like this ⇓.
In the reality, Hayama will do as He and Hachiman say, do both. His conclusion at this point is like lie or his attempt to erase the bitter truth of Hachiman with the truth he can accept, got it? I really feel surprised in WW’s incisiveness to think… no, to invent such complex conversation that intervenes Hayama’s stratagem like this.
Even his Reactions are consistent With Hachiman’s Doubt & His Own Alibi.
After I read/watched manga -Monologue- v11 and anime Oregairu season 2 ep11, it appears that Hayama’s reactions are consistent with these events. ⇓
- when Hachiman starts saying the topic why he hides his career path from others.
- after Hachiman explains.
- when Hayama is saying his own explanation.
- and when he concludes what he will do (that is his lying).
If you read manga -Monologue- or/and anime, you will see Hayama’s reactions to Hachiman’s words and his own explanation. Anime helps me know that he is worried and tries to excuse while manga shows his reactions 1-5 that is more perfect than anime. Manga also shows how his expressions ARE GOING to change like this so you can see how he tries to strive.

got it? It’s like how a squid is scared so it sprays ink to that frightening shark’s face to disguise and escape with such high speed. You should pick liberal art and become the lawyer like your father, Hayama. Hachiman’s research is apparent but you object his accusation flawlessly.
Images in manga Monologue are more clearly than anime’s. However, with manga and anime, I will conclude that you will see his reactions when he was caught by someone when he is doing something bad secretly and when he is excusing (that he looks away to the different way so he will not look at the police Hachiman.
So I recommend manga -Monologue- v11 if you want to check his reactions but I would recommend you to explore both media. (thanks for Kazuki-sensei for drawing perfect character’s reactions, and he also did good job for drawing Haruno’s expressions in v12 too)
Why does Hayama not accept valentine chocolates?
If my analysis about he plans to prevent losing relationships (his friends and others), it can describe the reason why he can’t accept delicious chocolates from any girls in this year. If I suppose that he accepts them, what should he do to every girls’ feelings if they gave him chocolates but they know later that he will get married in the same year?
I suspect that he wants to …refrain any negative emotions that will break down relationships that he established until this day that it is like an echo of his trauma from the past that is the malice of others. To be nice with them is the only way he can survive.
So what he can do is just …tasting?
What happens after his silent plan?
If you reach this point, you would know what happens and Hayama can destroy Haruno’s trust toward his love rival. But his silent plan causes the flow-on effect to other characters who get involved with his scheme. What Hachiman (and co.) are doing, were caught by Haruno, while Haruno herself took 2x, umm 3x effect.
- She is disappointed in his tenuity.
- What she is worried about Yuigahama is going to happen soon.
- She knows a certain thing that compares with Yukino in the past, her sister at that time is better.
- She is disappointed that her plan to help her sister is ruined completely.
- She suffers from her own miserable life (was decided by her family/mother to marry with the one who she hates the most despite she ever exerted her love/sincerity that you can read her mind in the third memorandum.
- And her sister and Hachiman who she always expects to save her, become like 1) and 3))… When her hope in 4) is destroyed, her final hope to be saved from 5), is destroyed automatically.
This is more than triple effect!! I am not surprised why she is drunk and intends to drink more because she can’t believe people around her anymore. I pick the effect in Haruno’s mind because what Hayama focused is her by usi- umm asking Hachiman for help.
…I notice that every time Hayama plans something, the person who got the most mental damage is always Haruno (the second is Hachiman). Anybody who he adheres to, can’t avoid the suffering.
After Haruno’s SP (Spirit Point) reduces to 1, the next event that Hayama is looking for is their wedding (or engagement) that would be revealed in LN v13, I guess. But IMO, I never think that his wish will be granted in the end because WW lay “genuine” already so it is 0% that Haruno will be his. I can predict that her sister and his rival will save her from the miserable fate.
I published this post on Haruno’s birthday so I think it’s good opportunity that I published this analysis so other people will understand about her feeling and things she experiences more or less via the analysis of Hayama’s plan. He also is one of the interesting characters who will be like one of the big walls for Hachiman, Haruno, and even her sister. I don’t think Hachiman and Yukino can overcome difficulty to help Haruno by themselves since fighting against Hayama about this issue, it means Mrs.Yukinoshita will join his party as well.
When I return to Hachiman’s past, it seems when he needs to do something but he can’t do it by himself alone, he learns to ask for help from other people and it seems they respond to him very well. So I would not be surprised if he will ask them for help again in the future in LN v13 or 14. I hope Haruno will learn this from him or her sister too (as Hiratsuka Shizuka (平塚 静) is pleased watching Haruno bares her feeling to Hachiman in ∨N (Haruno’s route)).

Now I am writing two Yahari analyses, why does Hachiman accept Yumiko’s request? and the secondary career path of Hayama Hayato (? Why is there the second?). It’s rare for me to analyze Hachiman. I am not sure which one I will publish first but it would be the next month, maybe.
