Oregairu Analysis – Why Does Hikigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) Decide to Accept Miura Yumiko (三浦 優美子)’s Request? (Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. Zoku. Ep11)

Miura Yumiko (三浦 優美子)‘s request to know the career path of her crush, Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人) is not easy. But what is the important factor that makes Hikigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) accept this job? And it appears that it is related to “a certain Yukinoshita” as well. I will explain about this issue in this Oregairu analysis. Also, this post will answer related topics as usual.

Before you will read this, I strongly recommend you to read LN v10, Yahari Zoku anime ep11 and manga -Monologue- v10 before proceed.

I ever doubted why Hachiman chooses to accept this request previously, even Yukino and Yuigahama Yui (由比ヶ浜 結衣) are surprised to hear his question (when he is asking Yumiko) and surprised again for his acceptance to find Hayama’s career path. After I read his monologues thoroughly, Hachiman shows how he is not 100% nice guy and helps others without his own motivation. Let alone confronting Hayama’s disgruntlement.

Moreover, we can notice how Hachiman tries to know Hayama’s career path so much, collecting info via many characters, cogitate this issue for days on end and asking his allies to “capture” the target (or is Ebina Hina (海老名 姫菜)‘s faith going to become the reality but switches to HachixHaya!?).

Any HayaxHachi or HachixHaya are fine, so they are riba!!

Ahem, therefore accepting this request would not produce any benefits to him anyway but he puts effort into this problem as if this is his own personal problem. So his determination and effort this time were very doubtful to me but I didn’t think about this much. Maybe it is because I would focus on other characters. That’s why this question faded away from my mind.

But after I received a request from one of my blog visitors, Neko☆Damashi that s/he ever questioned me about this issue, that I decided to analyze it via a comment. Actually, I am the one who wants to say thanks to this visitor for this question, I can understand about Hachiman better. So I decided to write this post to improve this analysis and to share this to everyone to consider. And it appears that Hachiman accepts this request for his own self-satisfaction that I will explain later.

The factor that has an effect on Hachiman’s Determination.

To know why he accepts Yumiko’s request, I needed to review the conversation between both of them in LN v10 exhaustively. But I specified a standing point in advance that I should not believe his thought totally or straightforwardly because there are many times characters’ thoughts can be wrong or even take side with their owners. So it means that I just reviewed his monologue and considered other factors to reach the most possible answer.

ps. In anime Yahari Zoku ep11 and manga -Monologue- v10 have this scene too but I think LN is still the best material because it explains his monologue.

So I will set the conversation between Hachiman and Yumiko as the area that I read his monologue. After I read it over and over, I will say that you can believe in his thought in this area because what I found in his thought, there is just honest only. Although it also is unclear at the same time.

Analyze All Possible Factors.

Once in a while, I can post Ebina’s images. Yay!

After I was immersed in thought, I found out that honest desire of Yumiko is so consistent with his own wish. But I don’t mean that he wants to know Hayama’s career choice (or else Ebina’s dream would come true for real). I mean that their wish to [understand close people] and [their wish to live in the pleasant environment].

1. His Wish to Understand Close People.

The character who he wants to understand is the one you would know who. For this case is Yukino. One of the reasons why I think he wants to know about her more is not because he treats her as more important than Yuigahama. But he always muses about Yukino who is like himself almost time, the wish to become her friend, her image, and personal life, etc. All of these might not be all examples but they conduce to his curiosity to know more about Yukino.

2. His Wish to Stay in The Pleasant Environment.

The pleasant state that he wants to live is someplace that everyone would aspire to. If I need to write an overall image for Hachiman’s case, it is the state of society that he feels satisfied. In case you want to know this wish, you can see clearly examples in anime Oregairu season1 ep12,  season2 ep10 (after the trio assisted the Christmas event) that don’t show the peaceful environment only but also the happiness because 2YY defend for him because the trio went through fire and water from events in the school (Oregairu ss2 ep1). And all of these are just one of the point of views that shows how he is please because those girls see his importance, he belongs this relationship, this world.

For this factor, you can say that environment means relationship.

All Steps Lead to Accepting Yumiko’s Request.

Then before I will zero in on Hachiman, I will conclude Yumiko’s desire first (that maybe you would know that already). She just wants to be close to her crush, Hayama so she wants to understand everything about him. Thoughts and feelings. Spending time with him satisfies her and it will reach this goal too. Staying together with people, you will understand about them and can be close to them.

If I believe in Hachiman’s monologue and Yumiko’s words, her two underlined words above ⇑ are her incentives that swirl each other.

Yumiko: “The thing about close people… It’s because I want to be that way that I want to know.”

Hachiman: The things that she wanted to know likely weren’t the things that happened in the past, let alone his future career path.

What was he thinking? What was he feeling?

All she wanted to know were his feelings.

She wanted to understand him.

When Hachiman is listening to Yumiko, he can understand her feeling immediately even if she just says shortly. Empathy without explaining in detail means the listener has the same attitude/expectation with the speaker. If I need to name this moment that happens to him, it’s like “awakening”, to find out that there’s someone who has the same wish as him. And it leads to the conclusion that his attitude is not different from Yumiko’s.

There is another person who is thinking the same as them.

But the big problem of understanding more about that person is crossing the line between them. And doing this might lead to being hated by the owner of that area and s/he might be distant that is the greatest obstacle for Hachiman toward the one who he wants to understand more (that you know who). So the last question he asks Yumiko is not because he wants to know her own resolve but it is…

I was fully aware that it was a cruel question. But it’s something I still wanted to ask. It’s not like I wanted to know Miura’s resolve. Truthfully, I wasn’t interested in that at all.

It’s just, I still wasn’t confident whether taking a step over the line for someone who didn’t wish for it was the right thing to do or not. I thought that you could build and maintain a relationship without going out of your way to concern yourself with it.

If the reason why he asks her is like this (underlined thought), it means he wants …the confirmation from anyone who has the same wishes as him that it is the right thing to do even if he is still afraid of negative response from the other side. Her determination becomes his own self-assertiveness as the result. …Humans sure are complex.

So when Hachiman promises Yumiko’s request the second she answers to him that she wants to know, her answer makes him “move” or should I say? The ignition. This is the reason why he accepts her request. It’s like …his own inspiration drives him to “do something” (that is different from accepting her request to help her).

If I watched anime only, I can’t notice his change after he heard her answer since I compared his reaction between LN and anime, he in this ep11 doesn’t show this change in his mind, let alone his sudden reaction. His move in LN is like …a car installs nitr*us oxide system and Yumiko activates the system. Activate it is like how he …starts this investigation until the marathon race ends. But his move can’t be noticed in LN so easily except I tried to find the reason why he accepts her request.

(ps. Actually, anime doesn’t show all of his efforts.)

So Hachiman decides to accept Yumiko’s request because he wants to confirm his own desire to understand more about Yukino that is the 1st factor above ⇑.

What is she thinking? What is she feeling?

But he is not confident (that his true negative emotion is the main cause of this indecision and it is the common emotion that every human are familiar with it very well) to cross the line in order to understand the one he wants to build the true relationship and can maintain this everlasting relationship but the other side doesn’t wish anyone taking that step over the line.

But his wishes are focused on her mainly because of various reasons that I ever described above. From the picture above, I …don’t know how to say after I “touched” his origin feelings or the true reason why he insists to act as the older brother of Yukino and is pleased to be relied on. He is like other humans. So in order to know that origin reason or his deepest feelings, I recommend you to read his monologue in LN

3. 6 (before and during the cultural school festival)
4. 9 (his monologue before he will say genuine in front of girls (in his home)).

Or you don’t need to read all of these but v12 instead.

Hachiman’s Origin feelings

But I found the important information in LN v12 after I published this post about 2-3 weeks. WW reveals Hachiman’s true feelings and the reason why he acts as Yukino’s big bro and is pleased to be relied on. That information is his own monologue in c6, after Haruno tells him that trio’s relationship is codependency. His description about this issue and reviewing himself are honest and clearly that can explain his conditions in the past and the present, and the current situation of trio’s relationship

(And I think Haruno understands his feeling very well when it comes to be relied on because she ever felt like that before and her origin feelings are the same as him because she was lonely but felt pleased when her little sister relied on her so it eased her loneliness). At this point might be out of topic but I think Haruno and Hachiman’s origin feelings are the same when it comes to their loneliness, and their feeling when they found sanctuaries.

The different thing is she experienced the evil of this action fully while Hachiman almost experiences it fully if she doesn’t arrange her sister out of the club (by asking her mother for “help”) that she witnessed that it is the prejudicial environment for her little sister already.

Does Hachiman’s Investigation Help Him Understand More About Yukino?

A: I tried to find how he can understand more about her by doing this job but what he learns about her is the close relationship between her and Hayama’s families and her mother’s wish only. So I ever thought that he accepts this job to know more about her but the outcome he gains is less than he expected.

But if it becomes like that for real, he would show negative emotions such as disappointment or . But in the end (in LN), he feels very satisfied with the results (gains Hayama’s career choice and also Yukino’s). So the assumption above is wrong implicitly. Everything should be consistent or else it is not the right answer. That’s why I need to search for other assumption.

After I reviewed his investigation carefully, I notice his overwhelming inspiration to stop the rumor (by restoring Yumiko and Hayama’s relationship). So it means that he “pours” the motivation that he got the confirmation from Yumiko (to understand more about Yukino) into his another wish (stopping the rumor to maintain the peaceful environment) instead.

Hachiman’s action toward two people (Yukino and Hayama) in this case should be explained in terms of logic and feelings to see the clearer image.

In the case of Yukino: His action to pour his effort/determination into stopping the rumor, shows how he eludes things that his sensei ever taught him about human’s heart and how to reach it. Then it means he knows what he should do from sensei and Yumiko but chooses the way he excels in, that is using his logic to something he can manage, stopping the rumor. This point shows the beginning of diverging his motivation from the main objective to the second objective.

And stopping the rumor leads to finding out Hayama’s career path ⇒ to understand more about Hayama instead.

Finally, Ebina’s praying for this otp is going to come true.

In the case of Hayama: When Hachiman turns to “understand more about Hayama” that this target is not his close people and both of them don’t get along (consider from the certain incident in LN v8) at all. So Hachiman’s fear to make another side hate him or be distant from him, can’t compare with another person.

If Hachiman’s determination > the fear, he can exert everything into understanding about Hayama extremely by reviewing everything about Hayama, actions, words, and info about this target. That’s why Hachiman can analyze Hayama totally and (almost) correctly.

So we can notice Hachiman’s avoidance and devotion, including the different results between these two actions by comparing between two persons. While “two things” are overlooked somewhere because of his certain negative emotion.

His satisfaction that is shown when he stays in the infirmary happens because he can stop the rumor indirectly and Yukino tells him her career path. Both of them are the results that happened because of his effort. When things are in line with expectations, it is normal to be pleased. But her big sister, Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) destroys his happiness by opening the hidden file that makes him retreat to the previous point, …no, to “the different point” instead. the point that Haruno found out later in LN v11 and mentions this to him in LN v12, how he can’t get drunk.

Alcohol is not good, so how about Americano?

So for this question, he doesn’t understand more about Yukino via the mission but it appears that he understands one part of Yukino because of Haruno instead.

Next, I will publish the (secondary) career path of Hayama Hayato. Even if I declared his primary career path in my blog, but what is “another hidden path” that he wrote in Prospective Career Path Questionnaire? Maybe this girl gives the hint to us already.
