Do you wonder why the attitude of Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) changed when her little sister, Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃) asked her about career path of Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人), when she came to the school for giving counseling to 2nd year students? (LN v10, anime ss2 ep11) This Yahari analysis will answer this question and other relate questions.

This is the second Oregairu analysis that focused on LN v10, Yahari Zoku anime ss2 ep11 and manga -Monologue- v11. Actually, this post can be the next part of Oregairu Analysis – Why does Yukinoshita Haruno Call Yukino Over? because I wrote how Haruno noticed the bad signal from her little sister, when she “asked help” from HIkigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) so she will not need to go with her mother, in spite of he can’t provide that. So I strongly recommend you to read analysis above first, before read this post.
What is the bad signal I mentioned? I can say for now that because of the scene above, Haruno decided to come to the school again by pretending that she came to support the academic and career center of the school as the tutor. But before I will answer this, I will explain why she was so annoyed when her sister asked her about career path of Hayama. Because although many people don’t think it’s so important, compare to the legendary scene in ep11, such as the certain scene in the infirmary room, or marathon and happy ending. Many refreshing scenes are so brighten and made the uncomfortable truths become the shadow.
However, I will write my old assumption about why Haruno was dissatisfied when her sister asked her about career path of Hayama first.
My old assumption
When I read/watched the scene when Haruno changed her attitude completely after she was asked by her sister, I didn’t understand why/what made her angry and pushed her sister away like that, in spite of Yukino didn’t do anything wrong. Just asking some info from people is not relying on too much either. That’s why I’m so confused.
But after I wrote Oregairu Analysis – “After” Yukinoshita Haruno Decides to Help Yukino. (The Last Part), I noticed that a certain scene during the school cultural fes. is so similar with the situation when Yukino asked her big sister. I will pick some pics of two situation, to make you consider.
- The first pic above made me analyze that Haruno dislikes when someone asked her for help, because she hates how her mother always asks her for help. So when her younger sister asked her to help her, Haruno activated her barrier 150% to not let Yukino can use her by destroying “all of good reasons” of her little sister without any mercy.
- That’s why when I return to look at the second pic above, I assumed easily that Haruno activated her barrier again because Yukino was
asking her to helprelying on her again.
Therefore, I “trusted Haruno’s words so easily” when she told her sister that,
“Here I was thinking you could finally do things by yourself, yet you’re relying on people again like back then. I mean, that’s what made you sooo adorable when you were younger. Oh, I know,”
“More importantly, Yukino-chan, what’s your career path?”
Her remarks supported my assumption that Yukino was relying on her, so she pushed her sister away by saying something like this. And it worked, Yukino who got surprise attack, gave up to ask her. When she asked her sister about her career path after she pushed Yukino away like that, Yukino would not let her know it, so asking her other question that is personal for Yukino, will deflect Yukino’s interest efficiently. And Haruno destroyed awkward situation too by changing her target to Hachiman and Yuigahama Yui (由比ヶ浜 結衣).
That is my assumption that I got reference from LN v6.
But!
After I wrote Oregairu Analysis – The Conclusion of Yukinoshita Haruno’s Plan (Operation Fire Doughnut) & The TRUTH(s) behind Hayama Hayato’s Sacrifice for Hikigaya Hachiman (The Last Part)., I focused on how Haruno felt when she said to Hayama just one line, after she realize everything he during anime season2 ep4.
But that’s not enough to make me doubt my assumption, until I finish writing Oregairu Analysis – Why does Yukinoshita Haruno Call Yukino Over? (Link is above ⇑). When I realized why she called Yukino over to attend family dinner so Yukino will know the real situation of Haruno and the closer relationship between their family and Hayama’s family that is like “asking for help” voicelessly of Haruno at the same time.
That’s why, after I considered what happened in these two situations above in LN v8 and 10, that happened after the incident in LN v6 (Yukino asked Haruno to help during the school cultural festival), I decided to change my assumption again.
My new assumption
I think you might get wind of what my new assumption should be. So let’s return to this scene again.
I will say first that I used reference from LN v10, and Isshiki Iroha (一色いろは) was not in this scene either. There are Haruno, Hachiman, Yukino and Yuigahama only, because Yukino asked her sister and her club mates to the corner of the conference room so she can ask more conveniently. When Haruno heard her sister want to ask something from her, she came along normally, so it means that she had no any problem if her little sister will ask her something. That’s why my old assumption was dropped, because Haruno didn’t feel like her sister was asking her to do something, but just question something from her only. However, what she heard from her sister is the key.
“Do you have any idea what Hayama’s career path may be?”
…(got it?)
When Haruno heard Yukino’s question, she seems surprised because she repeatedly blinked her eyes. Also she let out a sigh and asked her sister back.
I think when she knew what her little sister want to know, Haruno felt disappointed, but don’t get me wrong. I didn’t mean Haruno was disappointed in her younger sister at all, but I assume that she felt like that because of something that is more simple. She hated when she was asked about Hayama, the one she dislikes.
When Haruno asked Yukino back,
“Hayato’s career path? Oh, is that it?”
Hachiman noticed her apathetic tone. And I also noticed her moodiness. So I am sure that Haruno was in the bad mood. When Yukino urged her big sister again, Haruno released her grumpiness to defenseless target. If you want to know why Haruno did like this, it’s like… when someone asked you something that is very irritating for you, you would feel like that, no matter that someone didn’t intend to make you feel bad.
“Who knows? I’m not really interested, so I haven’t asked. I bet he’s already chosen something anyway.”
This remarks made me confirmed that she didn’t care about Hayama at all and there’s so much hatred toward him in Haruno’s mind.
- Her attitude toward him after she hurt her sister during the double date.
- Her effort to destroy the situation she must stay with him alone during family dinner.
- And this time too.
These three clues reflected her feeling toward Hayama clearly.
So I think Yukino didn’t know that her big sister hates Hayama, so she didn’t intend to make her angry. If Yukino realized this, she would not ask Hayama’s info from her sister.
That’s why when Haruno’s reaction surprised the trio, because all of them didn’t know she dislikes Hayama, and they never think asking Hayama’s info from her, will make her upset so much. But this caused Haruno and her sister argued (in anime and manga -Monologue- had no the full story). After Haruno stopped, she realized the damage she caused, this made her stuck out her tongue in spite of it’s bad manner, but her expression this time told me that the flame of anger of her still remained, to the point she didn’t mind her manner.
My New New Assumption (New!)
I got this new assumption unintentionally when I read LN v10 again, about Hayama’s career path event because I want to edit analysis – second memorandum again. But what I found is different thing instead. I can say for now that I finally understand Haruno’s words when she talks with Yukino. Because this assumption will be consistent with their conversation and their emotions (especially Haruno) 100%, so this assumption will be the final. But actually, I will modify My New Assumption above because it’s still about Hayama.
When I tried to decode 2nd memorandum that is about Hayama, I checked LN v10 again and search any clues about him. And this v10 is about his career path. And I will remind you first that I wrote Oregairu Analysis – Arranged Marriage might Happen for real!? that is about the marriage of Haruno and Hayama. That’s why I reached the conclusion about his secret career path automatically, that is…
I intend to write about why Hayama hides his career path although he can tell his friends while advises them to not follow others without any thinking later. But because I reviewed LN v10 (before 2nd memorandum), I read the conversation between Yukinoshita sisters when Yukino asks her sister about Hayama’s career path. I will admit to you first that my new assumption above is not correct 100%. Because I wrote that assumption while I didn’t realize about the arranged marriage between Haruno and Hayama yet. That’s why I almost assumed correctly only.
But now, with the arranged marriage, I reviewed the conversation between Haruno and Yukino again, and I finally understand why Haruno tells her sister to find his career path on her own, and she says that Yukino knows the answer without asking her (Haruno).
To know the reason why Haruno is irritated when her younger sister asks her about his career path, we must return to the previous event in Haruno’s timeline first. I mean, when Haruno forces Yukino to join the family dinner during New Year.
I will mark this as the important event that made Haruno calls over her sister to this event. I wrote why she calls her in my Oregairu Analysis – Why does Yukinoshita Haruno Call Yukino Over? So I recommend you to read this first (or should I say, LN v10 first) before read my new new assumption below, because it’s important to know why Haruno is irritated to her litter sister when she is asked about Hayama’s career path. I can say that everything has its own cause. And it’s like domino.
If you read at this point, I will assume that you read my recommendations already.
I will say that the previous event in Haruno’s timeline lies the truth that makes Haruno is upset. This family dinner event is not what makes Haruno upset directly, but it’s the event that the author wrote to let readers know about the closer relationship between families of Yukinoshita and Hayama. And it means the arranged marriage between the heirs of these two families, Haruno and Hayama, that is what she was forced by her mother or parents.
So when Haruno meets Yukino again during the academic and career center (Yahari ss2 anime ep11), I will tell you first that if you take anime as the main reference, you will not gain the true answer because some dialogues and reactions when both of them are talking, were excluded, that made some emotions vanished from that scene as the next result.
If my assumption about the arranged marriage is true, I will let you imagine how Haruno is feeling toward this event that she was forced by her family to marry with someone she hates the most. And how will she be feeling when her little sister comes to ask her about the career path of that guy? If you combine these two factors together, you will find the answer and Haruno’s true emotions at that time. And I finally understand about Yukino as the bonus.
To check this assumption that it’s true or not, you can check it so easily by reviewing the conversation of Yukinoshita sisters during the academic and career center.
When Yukino starts to ask Haruno about Hayam’s career path, you can see Haruno’s reactions. It’s like she can’t believe that her sister will ask her this. I am not sure that Haruno can’t believe Yukino doesn’t know his career path even if she also joined the family dinner and should know the answer by noticing the closer relationship between their family and Hayama’s family during the dinner, or she can’t believe that her sister asks her because she might know about his career path (don’t forget that Haruno hates Hayama and if she is asked because she is expected to know the career choice of someone she hates, do you imagine how she will feel?).
Next, when Hachiman observes Haruno’s expression when Yukino asks her, he thinks it seems Haruno is aware of something. I don’t know his thought is correct or not, but if Haruno realizes she will be forced to marry with Hayama, it’s normal for her to be aware of his career path.
When Yukino asks Haruno again, Haruno says she doesn’t know and she is not interested. I believe her words because if you look via her point of view, it’s not weird for her to not want to know about Hayama and she is not interested anything about him because she hates him. It’s like she doesn’t care about him. But when I review her words at this point, I think she is not honest much when she answers like this. Because it’s impossible that she will not realize his career path. But I know that she is angry right now. You can see her emotions clearly from her expression.
Next, Haruno tells her younger sister back that
“…Besides, Yukino-chan, you should have an idea of what it is without having to ask me.”
I will tell you that Haruno’s words above is consistent with my assumption about arranged marriage and the closer relationship of two families, because Haruno is talking about Yukino should realize the answer because she also joined the family dinner and should see their parents are …very familiar, more than usual. You can imagine if you look via Yukino’s point of view when she is watching her parents and Hayama’s parents… I think Haruno thinks her younger sister would notice it and suspect about that closer relationship by herself.
However, Yukino’s answer makes Haruno understand that her little sister was not aware what I wrote above after all. But I remember that Yukino didn’t want to join that family dinner and always avoids her family, I think I start to understand about her a little bit. It’s like when you think you doesn’t want to be with people, but you are forced to join, you will think you don’t involve with them automatically. That makes you not notice the surrounding/people too. I think Yukino was not aware about the closer relationship of parents because she thinks she was not related to them (adults, Hayama and Haruno). That’s why although she was there and could notice something, her point of view was limited because she thought she was alone or felt out of place. That’s why she can’t notice that her older sister is in big trouble either (but I will not blame Yukino because Haruno is the one who can’t reveal her worry).
When Haruno realizes that Yukino didn’t notice or even suspect what happened in the family dinner, she shows a slight grimace. Because her effort to drag her little sister is in vain because Yukino has no clue. It means that “asking for help voicelessly” of Haruno fails.
So Haruno tells her younger sister to think about it on her own, because I think Haruno would think that if her sister reviews what happened, she would know the truth for sure. But I think Haruno doesn’t convince Yukino to find Hayama’s career path, she is meaning her (Haruno) situation/problem.
And it seems Haruno doesn’t want to think about this or she wants to escape from this situation, she bashes her little sister and asks her career path back. I think Haruno knows well that Yukino will never tell her choice, not after she was push back just now. So I think Haruno intends to let Yukino cover so Haruno can escape from this awkward situation.

When Hayama noticed Haruno and called her name, she greeted him back but it looked like the commotion in the conference room had slightly ballooned. While she was wondering why the stares from people is kinda different, Isshiki mentioned about the rumor. This made Haruno “questioned” her until she surrendered and told her more detail. But when she heard it, she said coldly that,
“Oh, so that’s what it is… That’s something they’ve been through since a long time ago,”
and she dropped this issue as if she was not interested…
I think when Haruno knew about the rumor that is relate to her sister and Hayama, she would understand that both of them must stay quiet until the trial will vanish. That’s why she didn’t try to meddle like she always did when she got wind of interesting news. I think it’s because if she provoked this even a bit, the history would repeat itself, “that tragedy” that ever happened a long time ago (I guess during both of them attended the elementary school) would happen again. That’s why she retreated instantly that made Hachiman surprised.
What was Hayama thinking when he looked at Haruno?
When he, Miura Yumiko (三浦 優美子), Tobe Kakeru (戸部 翔) and others were waiting for discussing with tutors, he glanced at Haruno. What was he thinking when she was in his eyes? If I considered what happened between them, is LN v8 & 10 too. It’s impossible that he didn’t think anything at all because I do believe that the stories connected each other. So I will try to write assumptions to find out what he was thinking by based on my assumption that you might read my analysis about him already, that he has feeling for her.
- He wanted to get some advice from her. It’s not weird for him to want her suggestion, didn’t he? I mean, if he always wants her to interest in him, the gold chance to discuss about his future with the one he loves, is what he should not miss.
- He just wanted to has some interactions with her. Since he chose his career path already, so he will use this opportunity as the excuse to talk with her by pretending that he wanted her suggestion.
- He is just normal boy, no matter he is perfect or not. When the one he has feeling for was in front of him, that person would steal his attention easily. So although he didn’t intend to consult with her, he still looked at her anyway.
Normally, I would think he wanted to use this opportunity by using the reasonable excuse (consult about his career path) so he can talk with her, come near her and he didn’t need to worry people at the school will suspect or gossip about this. After I noticed he liked to use secret technique like this (look for reasonable excuse to do what he wants), I think he will not miss this rare chance.
However, no matter he wants to talk with his crush or not, he can’t do it. Because his situation right now will not allow him to do that. Please don’t forget he was behaving to endure the rumor storm between him and Yukino. So he can’t has any suspicious interactions with any girl (except Miura who is in the same clique). The good evidence is when Haruno just greeted him in front of people, they started gossiping instantly. Just this reason is enough to bind him from getting close to her. And Haruno herself would not allow this either, since she is not interested to be near him, let alone she realized about the rumor between her sister and him. So although he used command “go forward”, she would use “go backward”, because she didn’t want her sister hurt unnecessary by causing the wind of rumor become the tornado.
So I will end this analysis at this point. Next analysis will be,

will you do analysis why hachiman accepts miura’s request on finding out what career path that hayama takes, even yukino and yui suprised on hachiman’s conduct (anime dosen’t show this), both of them know hachiman hates her very much

I am surprised when 8man accepts this job too. I am not confident enough to analyze about this issue, but I will do my best.
It appears that there’s some empathy in 8man’s mind after he listened to Yumiko despite she explained just a little.
This is not the first time he has some sympathy to other people, and it becomes the impulse to make him accept their requests. That means he also feels like this toward some people around him too, so I will assume that
[he also wants to be close to them, that is why he also wants to understand about them.]
8man understands well how Yumiko feels when the one she wants to be close, is distant and she wants to stay together a bit longer. Because this also is similar with his wish too. In LN v8-9, you can notice his attempt to maintain the club (solved Iroha’s case so the three of them can stay together). And he was depressed because the relationship among them is gonna be distant for real, until sensei advised him so he could recover their relationship again. That’s why 8man is the one who understands Yumiko’s feeling very well.
If 8man this time is 8man in the past, it’s possible that he wouldn’t volunteer to help her because he has no any reason to help others to be close with their group despite he himself is alone.
This is just one example only, but if you read his monologue while he is listening to Yumiko, all of them are what he wants too. Want happiness and doesn’t want to lose it despite he knows that it will end someday.
But these are not enough to make him accept her request, so he asks her a question. And it seems that… he learns something from her answer that makes him consider that it’s fine although he needs to cross the line, hurt people who are close to him, to be hated by them, he still wants to know and understands about them.
All of these are what he never do it before (I mean, do this to close people of him directly).
So the reason why he accepts her request is not because he wants to help Yumiko (or this is not main reason), but to try his best to know more about Hayama, is like… how I should say, he is driven by his own purpose to do this job, but his target that should be [close people of him], is shifted to Yumiko’s target [Hayama] instead. If I will conclude 8man’s wish, what he wants is the same as Yumiko’s and he learns from her that it’s fine to step over the line, to hurt them. (And I think he will do this to his close people in LN v13-14 definitely, because this is the way to reach the righteous path.)
Of course, it’s not like he wants to know about Hayama either, but humans are not honest to themselves and very complex because of various factors.

Hayama is the only one who can specify if 8man’s explanation is true or not. IMO, 8man’s analysis is correct 95% but wrong about liberal art.

i thought hachiman expecting (force) hayama to choose science because hayama dosent like to be bothered by people, i dont know about japanese education though, choosing science means harder to get college, but jobs are easy to get, if hayama case should be no problem for him, but liberal arts means easy to get college but limited jobs because many students choose liberal arts for their option. I guess hayama also think the same as yumiko, he want to end it with happy ending because he had terrible past that cant be recovered

I think Hachiman can see through him very well but at the same time, I doubt if he can guess Hayama’s path correctly. I am writing about this issue and will publish it in the future.

My gooodddddnesss.. i think it takes about one piece of time to completely understand this show (still not sure for it lol).. and it’s a lot better than represented.. it’s quite complicated and hence suppress the romance vibe for sure.. why! 😦
