Did you ever wonder why Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) called her younger sister, Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃) over for the family dinner? Did she just want to mess with her? This Yahari analysis will reveal the answer that you would not believe it can be.

I strongly recommend you to read LN v7-8. And manga -Monologue- v6-7.

Finally, this is the first Oregairu analysis that I focused on the Yahari story in LN v10, or anime Yahari Zoku ep10! For my opinion, this v10 has many mysterious things more than v8 that I ever used as the reference to write many analysis. And I intend to write many posts that are related to v10 as much as I can. Well as the title of this post said, I will write my assumption why Haruno called Yukino out to the family dinner after she and Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人) met HIkigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) and Yuigahama Yui (由比ヶ浜 結衣). I think I would not write too long like always because this post is for writing answer for one question only, and there’re many things that are not clear.
But first I will write my old assumption.
My old assumption
After I read and watch the scene when she did, I had no any clue why she did that. And her action is not what people were interested much, because the attitude of her little sister when she rushed to meet Haruno who caught Hachiman as a hostage, when she found out that her friend, Yuigahama was with him too, or when Hayama called her Yukino-chan (!), or when her mother appeared, and when Yukino sent SOS to Hachiman voicelessly.
I-It’s not like I’m Iroha fan you know!
And for anime watchers, another character who is very interesting is Isshiki Iroha (一色いろは) who grew up because Hachiman’s until she can confess her feeling at Hayama and did her best as the student council president even Hachiman who saw her development, admires her.
These interesting events focused on Yukino and made Haruno’s action was not something so special, and brought the result that she would do it to mess her sister anyway, but I assumed like this because I can’t think other suitable reasons that will explain her strange behavior. And the history showed me she always mess with her sister.
My new Assumption
Actually, although I re-read and re-watch anime and LN, I didn’t understand why Haruno wanted Yukino to come to the family dinner. Until I was writing The conclusion of Operation Fire Doughnut of Haruno and The multidimensional plan of Hayama. Or should I say, I started to suspect that she disliked “situation A”, so she changed it to “situation B”. What do I mean? I can say for now that it’s about the feelings.
So it’s time.
January 2nd,
The cafe
I will tell you first that when Hachiman and Yuigahama went shopping for the birthday present for Yukino, is January 2nd. Because when they went to pray at the shrine, was in January 1st, New Year. Yuigahama asked him what they should do about their shopping for Yukino’s present. After he gave it some thought, he asked her if tomorrow was okay. And she said OK. So they went shopping in January 2nd.
I will pick related clues that made me got my new assumption. These clues were filtered from Haruno’s circle.
clue 1 – Haruno’s feelings toward Hayama
If you already read all analysis that have tag “Yukinoshita Haruno”, you would know I tried to focus at her feelings toward Hayama, especially during the donut cafe and the double date in the cafe in LN v8. So I recommend you to read these two analysis first.
From my Oregairu Analysis – And Then, Yukinoshita Haruno Launched Operation Fire Doughnut! (Part 3), I described why she arranged Hayama to “have fun” with almost strangers and when she watched him suffer, that were never shown in anime and manga -Monologue- v7.
And in my Oregairu Analysis – The Conclusion of Yukinoshita Haruno’s Plan (Operation Fire Doughnut) & The TRUTH(s) behind Hayama Hayato’s Sacrifice for Hikigaya Hachiman (The Last Part), after she was aware his plan why he told her he wanted to invite Hachiman to the date so much to the point he bowed to him, how she fell into his own trap, why he appointed Yukino and Yuigahama to the same place while he was busy in the date, etc. Until she gave him the answer just one line and left.
If you didn’t read them yet, you can explore more, because I will not duplicate in this post anymore. So I will conclude that the “boring” she described how Hayama is, she means like that because of his true nature that she realized since the past until the present (the double date). Because of those, she hates him and is not interest in him at all.
clue 2 – Yukinoshita family and Hayama family are so busy.
From info of Hayama and Haruno told she and everyone were waiting for Yukino to come in LN v10 c2,
Hayama: “Our parents have been pretty close since a long time ago… When we were talking about making New Year greetings, they started talking about having dinner together. They’re just having me accompany them.”
Haruno: “Our family and relatives don’t really have it easy on New Year’s Day and the day before the fourth when work begins again is pretty hectic too. So the day we can make courtesy calls with acquaintances is just today.”
So it means in spite of Hayama parents had a chance to meet Haruno’s parents during the New Year greetings and how they are so busy, they decided to having dinner together. And when we are talking about the family dinner, it means that Haruno, her parents, Hayama and his parents will be there. I am not sure other relatives will be included in this event or not, but since there is New Year greetings already, it means that this family dinner would be private.
clue 3 – YUKINO WAS THE ONLY ONE.
The last clue is Haruno called her sister over is the only choice for her. I will explain more why it’s like that later.
clue 4 – Haruno never be alone with that person.
From all LN v1-11, I NEVER see her be with this person alone even once. She ever chatted with this person casually, but there are many people out there, such as during the school cultural festival or when she wanted to make this person meet her for her own self-satisfaction such as during the donut cafe.
clue 5 – Haruno met Hachiman.
If she didn’t meet Hachiman, she would not call her sister either.
Clue 6 – Haruno’s urgency (New!)
If you watched anime only, you will not notice her rush when she picks her phone and presses buttons before she will explain why she called over Yukino, Many scenes in anime were modified and switched.
mini assumption 1 – separate rooms?
Actually, this made me think this is the reason why Haruno called her sister over. Because if my assumption that was written below, is correct, I think it’s so reasonable to call reinforcement. Although there’s no evidence this family dinner will provide the separate dinner rooms, but I assume this from her unpleasant.
My assumptions Are…
Assumpion 1: Haruno was irritated about she must be with Hayama alone.
…I feel you doubt my assumption is possible or this is just my opinion. Actually, I think it’s like my personal opinion and I didn’t believe it 100%. So I will explain why I presented you this assumption.
decoded from clue 1 – Haruno’s feelings toward Hayama
From clue 1, I believe she is the normal human who can’t say what’s on her mind or she can’t ask her sister to come because she still thinks Yukino hates her and her family. And the latest meeting, she hurt her sister during the double date. But she can’t stand to stay with him alone, so the scale decided the judgement. She decided to call her sister over so she will not stay with the one she hates alone.
Actually, if I didn’t know she hates Hayama so much, I would not find out why she called reinforcement. Yukino’s existence will destroy the situation Haruno felt irritated because she will not be alone with the one she hates anymore and didn’t need to talk with him all times. Or she relieves when her sister be with her.
When I have this conclusion about she was so irritated to stay with him alone, next is…
decoded from clue 2 & 4
Next, I will let you imagine how the situation that Haruno will face soon, the family dinner. Since New Year greetings happened yesterday, I assume that people who will be in this smaller event like family dinner, should be Haruno, her parents, Hayama and his parents. Because why they need to meet other relative in spite of they already met in the greetings yesterday and we know from Haruno that they are so busy. However, I didn’t believe that other relative will not be in this family dinner, since it’s still possible, but I still believe that she would be with Hayama alone when they were having dinner too. I will explain why both of them would be alone.
mini assumption 1 – separate rooms?
Hachiman’s monologue when he was thinking about his awkward experience when his mom accompanied with other mom and their children ended up playing together. And my own experience when my family and relatives had family dinner. They separated “adult zone” and “younger zone” clearly, so adults can chat whatever together, while they left anyone who are younger to another zone.
But the family dinner that Haruno and Hayama must accompany their families, would be another level.
In case there’s no separate room: It means children and parents have dinner at the same table, I think it’s less possible for her to call Yukino over, because although the situation is still awkward, but she still sits with her parents. Even if she hates her mother, but her father will be there too.
In case there is: If adults have some business to talk, they would arrange another dinner room for her daughter and Hayama’s son, so it’s more convenient for adults to discuss any business.
And when Hayama told that his parents are pretty close with her parents and they were talking about the greetings, they decided to have dinner together. So I will say that when they were talking, there are Haruno’s parents and Hayama’s parents in this circle only.
decoded from clue 3 – YUKINO WAS THE ONLY ONE.
If Haruno was aware in advance that she must be alone with Hayama since both of them are the children of two families that must accompany them in the family dinner (it’s not very difficult for her to imagine how it will be if their families will having dinner from her own experience), Yukino is the only choice for her because her sister is one of her family. She can’t force outsiders to go with them because this is family dinner.
decode from clue 5 – Haruno met Hachiman.
When she saw Hachiman and Yuigahama, I think she disliked because she saw them on a date together, but she had another problem that must be solved first (judge from her fast dialing).
She can sit at the same table with Hachiman and Yuigahama naturally by pretending to tease Yuigahama if they were on a date. While Yuigahama was answering her why they were together, I think although Haruno was listening her, but she was thinking other thing, she will use Hachiman to lure her sister from her nest. If she didn’t sit with them, she can’t let him use her smartphone to confirm Yukino’s doubt, and if she was not the same table, Hachiman and Yuigahama might leave from the cafe before her sister will come.
Assumptions 2: Haruno Wants Yukino to Know She will Get Marriage With Hayama. (New!)
I reach this assumption because I reviewed the conversation between Yukinoshita sisters when Yukino asks Haruno about Hayama’s career path in the school. What Haruno tells her sister is not what I understood completely. But if Haruno wants Yukino to know or see her (Haruno) situation, I think I can finally understand Haruno in the end. That means these two moments have some connection.
ps. I will edit assumption in my Oregairu Analysis – Why Is Yukinoshita Haruno So Upset Yukino When She Asks Her About Career Path of Hayama Hayato? too. Because I finally understand what Haruno tells Yukino already.
Assume that Haruno wants Yukino to know that she (Haruno) will get married with Hayama, she is not the type who can say her trouble or true feeling. So dragging her little sister to the dinner family, will make Yukino realize what is going on or notice there’s something change in their atmosphere or everyone in this event. if Yukino notices something change in their family and Hayama’s family. I mean… Haruno really expects or even prays that Yukino to see both families “change” for some reason. If parents of these two families are going to arrange their heirs to marry, Haruno who doesn’t want to marry with Hayama, the only one she hates the most, she would want Yukino to know she is in big trouble. This is how she “drags” her sister to this event forcefully.
I am not sure that Haruno forces Yukino to this family dinner to ask help for real or not. If Haruno is smart, she would know that even her younger sister can’t afford help because they were taught to obey parents since childhood. But I think …she wants someone (and that person must be someone she cares for) to know her situation. Although Yukino can’t help her, I think Haruno wants her to know that their parents are making her older sister and Hayama to establish the everlasting relationship. And Haruno’s action is not asking for help clearly, but I think her stealthy action (dragging Yukino with her) and the result (Yukino is in the dinner with her),
are signals of asking for help.
So if my assumption 2 is true, it’s not important that there’s separate room or not anymore. It’s more possible that adults didn’t talk about arranged marriage clearly in front of their kids, but they arrange this dinner as the symbol of their closer relationship. If you know what I mean.
Oregairu Analysis – Arranged Marriage (Or Engagement) Might Happen For REAL!?
This is the real reason why Haruno wants Yukino to help her from this problem. That’s why she calls her over so her little sister will grasp the truth behind this family dinner.
And another evidence is, despite Yukino joined this dinner with them already, but I don’t see her notice Hayama’s future/career path after all. And Haruno realizes about this later when Yukino tells her that she doesn’t know his career choice. When Haruno knows that her little sister doesn’t notice anything while joining the dinner, you can see that she is dissatisfied (that her reaction doesn’t appear in anime) for some reason (that I ever thought she just feels sad because Yukino wants to talk with her because she just wants to ask some information from her only). Haruno is disappointed because her effort to make Yukino understand her (Haruno) situation, fails voicelessly.

(That might be Yukino or/and Hachiman)
Conclusion
To sum it up, I think both assumptions are most possible. But if I need to pick one, I would think my new assumption is the most consistent. Because it connects with many scenes.
- why is Haruno angry when Yukino asks her about Hayama’s career path?
- why does Haruno hurt when she realizes that her little sister doesn’t realize his future?
- and why does she answer Hachiman that “something that will find me”?
She just doesn’t know yet.
And there are more hints that are consistent or have connection with this assumption, but those clues come from another character, Hayama Hayato. I hope I will write more about these hints.
Out of Topic But Epic Conclusion In The Future.
With all of these analysis, I finally see that Yukino will save her older sister from this arrange marriage in LN v14. Because Haruno shows signals in LN v10-12 that she will be forced to live with someone she doesn’t want. And if Yukino realizes this in the end (and I will bet that she will know for sure), please don’t forget that Yukino owes her sister one wish. And if we combine all of these together, the result is Yukino, who loses self-confidence because of her surrounding, will change like Tsurumi Rumi (鶴見 留美) and save Haruno from this marriage.
Why do I pick Rumi as the reference? Because her attitude changing during the courage test is the good example that we will see in Yukino in the future. I believe that Yukino will “TRANSFORM” to be the better person (and bring out her good points) to save her older sister who lives in miserable life for sure. ^ ^

My assumption this time is not reliable because I assumed from many circumstance evidences, and the author didn’t reveal the truth behind this yet. I hope Haruno or the author will give me the correct answer in the future. But since I wrote this analysis, I will take this chance to answer other questions that are related to this post.
Why did Haruno not use Yukino’s friend, Yuigahama as the hostage instead?
She can choose between Hachiman and Yuigahama, why Hachiman? There’re many reasons.
She didn’t like Yuigahama because Yuigahama interests in Hachiman, For Haruno who also interests in him, I don’t think she will let Yuigahama use her smartphone. Will you give your smartphone to the one you hate or not? For anyone who doubt my assumption at this point, you can read more in Oregairu Analysis – “Before” Yukinoshita Haruno Decides to Help Yukino. They ever had a hidden fight after the summer camp, and Yuigahama got the title “Gahama-chan” from her as the result.
The space between Yukinoshita sisters.
- She chose the one her sister is following the shadow right now. Because if she want her own plan successfully, she must use “the most suitable people” to lure her sister. The evidence that made me think she chose him, is when I read the short conversation when she was calling her younger sister,
Hayama: “…I don’t think it’ll get through.”
Haruno: “No, I’m sure it will today,” said Haruno-san, wearing a smile full of certainty.
Hayama was not sure her sister will come, but she was sure Yukino will. Because the one who can lure Yukino, was with her already. Haruno’s confidence made me understand that …if she uses Hachiman, her sister will come instantly, because her big sister caught the one Yukino admires, so she needs to be there, to not let her big sister will not do anything to her idol.
If Haruno realizes that Hachiman is Yukino’s idol, it means that she would notice this condition for the first time since …the cultural festival finished or the after party in Drama CD v7?
I will say that this is might be the first time Hayama saw the change in Yukino. But he will see it again during the after party after marathon (I hope I can write about this if I have more time).
Why did Haruno stop Yukino to ask Hachiman for help?
When Haruno noticed her little sister didn’t want to accompany to family dinner, she sent SOS to Hachiman to help her, but her message was shot by Haruno. This is the important signal to let Haruno realize Yukino’s condition and she knows more that it will lead to the bad end, just like when it happened long time ago. So I will write about this again, in my next post!

I think it’s his old habit. He would ever call her like that before but because of their relationship was ruined. When Yukino’s trust toward him vanished, calling her first name is not what he can do anymore (while he still calls Haruno as Haruno-san (first name and add -san for respect).
But when he is sitting between Yukinoshita sisters and seeing them teasing each other, I think it’s like the reminiscence for Hayama that makes him loose self-control (and results in vacuum).
