Why are Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃) and Yuigahama Yui (由比ヶ浜 結衣) so mad at HIkigayam Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) after he confessed love to Ebina HIna (海老名 姫菜) during the school trip? They hurt because he “sacrificed” himself? Or because he confessed to another girl? Yukino hates how he maintains the status quo in clique of Hayama Hayato? Or she dislikes how he avoids the problem? Then why does Yuigahama Yui cry? This Yahari analysis provides you “answers” of this legendary question series.
REasons why I wrote this Analysis.
To tell you the truth, I found the answer while I was writing Oregairu Analysis – The Conclusion of Yukinoshita Haruno’s Plan (Operation Fire Doughnut) & The TRUTH(s) behind Hayama Hayato’s Sacrifice for Hikigaya Hachiman (Part 3), Actually, I had no any intention to write this because I didn’t know why 2YY are angry at him. But when I were writing this part 3, I must write about Yukino’s volition when she is going to help her kouhai, Isshiki Iroha (一色いろは) from the problem that her friends deliver to her, I found about why she is so mad at him, and is still keep rejecting him until she meets her older sister, Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) during the double date.
After Yukino is under pressure from her sister, although she is still rejecting and even hates him, I feel her overwhelming anger is extinguished (not completely, but clearly).
Another reason is I decided to write about this main issue in the separate post because it would be easier for people to read when they search for this topic in search engine.

Good Assumptions from others
Yukino is one thing, but when Yuigahama is also angry at him that he (and I too) is so surprised. So I were the same with other people, wanted to know the answers. As always, I read many comments in blogs or communities. Since I had no any assumptions, I just looked for the opinion that convinces me the most. Assumptions I believed that it would be correct, is…
- Yukino and Yuigahama hurt when they watch him hurt himself.
- Yukino hates he maintains the status quo of Hayama’s clique.
- Yukino hates how he avoids the problem.
However, although it’s high possible (in my opinion) that both of them would feel like that, but I don’t understand why Yukino stays angry at him although everything was over already. When he explains how to solve Isshiki’s problem, she opposes in unusual way, I mean… I was so surprised when I saw her is so mad at him. Even other people would feel the same.
This scene confused me because I didn’t understand why her anger is so overwhelming like that, but I didn’t search for more assumptions anymore. So I left this issue from my mind.
However, when I were writing the cold war between Yukinoshita sisters during the double date, after I wrote Haruno’s side, I decided to write Yukino’s side too, since I planned to write how she feels when her sister talks with her. Actually, I wrote Haruno’s side in TL like always, but I never think I wrote Yukino’s side in TL like her big sister’s, since I focused on analyzing mysterious characters like Haruno and Hayama. Another reason is I didn’t understand about Yukino much. So I planned to write about her mind when she encounters her big sister only.
But while I were writing Yukino’s side, I needed to write about “her determination” to look for suitable candidate to participate the election of school council president, since she and Yuigahama come to the cafe because he appoints them to discuss about this issue.
She and Yuigahama come to discuss with Hayama to solve Isshiki’s problem that this even happened before the double date arc. So I jumped to that timeline.
While I were writing Yukino’s volition in part 3, I explained how she directs her anger to him, that her behaviors reminded me the scene when Hachiman is angry at her in LN v6 (anime ss1 ep10).
In anime, it doesn’t show when he delivers his anger to her via his words. Even Yuigahama who notices that something happens between him and Yukino, she doesn’t know that he is angry at Yukino. But in LN v6, the story explains that sometimes he sends message that attaches his negative emotions to Yukino. And Yukino also is aware that he is mad at her.
If you want to know why he is feeling like that to her, I would say that he thinks he is betrayed by his own misunderstanding toward her and the “image” she shows all times that makes him misunderstands. It’s about the issue that he concludes at the end of LN v5 that he hates himself that he can’t be aware that he forces his own ideal to her, places his own expectations to her, that makes him can’t accept the truth that
——Even Yukinoshita Yukino tells lies.
this leads to the hatred and disappointment of Hachiman. And although we know that in his monologue, he blames himself, but when he and Yukino are nearby (such as in the club room), he shows his feelings to her too. Because if he doesn’t feel like that, he would not say normally but attaches his anger so she will hear it. How both of them create the transparent wall each other, confirms that she would be aware how he feels toward her. I think she would blame herself because she says at the first meeting of them that she doesn’t know him (but she really knows him because she also is in the limo car).
However, while he is angry at her, he reveals his anger not clearly because “blaming himself” holds the wave of anger and disappointment to not reach her 100%. So when we return to Yukino’s case again, I would say that she delivers her anger to him without any restraint, that leads to her condition when she meets her big sister again.
Why is Yukino so angry at hachiman?
What I want to tell you why Yukino is angry at him, is the same with why Hachiman is angry at her.
Why do I think like this? Because the author tries to explain how humans place expectations to other people by believing in the image of that person. The image that “the watcher” believes that what s/he understands is the truth because “the actor” presents her/his standpoint via remark, attitude and actions. So basically, both of them help one another to create this image. The final result is the watcher believes it, but will be betrayed by both of them later, when the watcher realizes that the image is not the truth,
the essence of the actor.
What I notice is, the author presents how Hachiman hurts because his own mistake in LN v5-6. And he also presents how Yukino hurts because of the same mistake in LN v7-9. Like the two sides of the same coin. When I refer LN v7, I mean when Yukino is so angry and hurts because she thinks that she is betrayed by Hachiman because she misunderstands that Hachiman she knows is “the real Hachiman”.
Then the next issue is, how/when does she create and believe the image of Hachiman? What is “the real Hachiman”?
You don’t mind to jump back again, do you? Then let’s jump to the scene when he destroys new policy of Sagami Minami (相模 南) during the school cultural festival.
When Yukino is suffering from overwork because of the new policy the chairwoman, Sagami. I need to see via her own point of view, so I can know how she creates Hachiman’s image. I will say that she can’t seek help from anyone or her big sister in the committee, even Hachiman (who would hate her at that time)). But something unbelievable happens. Hachiman, who she thinks he hates her, confronts Sagami to destroy her bad policy. His action makes her can’t believe in what happened. That’s why she …
To tell you the truth, when I saw her reaction in the pic above, I had no clue why she laughs loudly but mutes her sound with all her might (aka document in her hand). I thought that she thinks it’s very funny, just like when I ever thought that Haruno laughs like crazy but not mutes her sound like her little sister, because it’s very funny.
Take a deep breath, both of you.
Now I finally learn at the same time that what happens at brain of Yukinoshita sisters. If I need to explain, when we face something we never imagine/expect that it will happen or something that is very crazy/silly, one of how to respond it is, …I can’t describe well, so I let you imagine when both of them have a (or dozen in this case) screw loose…, I don’t know you experienced something like this or not.
But if you want to know “the real cause” that makes Haruno’s screws drop like a pic above, you can explore more in Oregairu Analysis – “After” Yukinoshita Haruno decides to help Yukino (The Last Part).
Although both of them laugh too much they can’t control (Haruno) and almost can’t control (Yukino) themselves, and the reasons that make each one laughs are different, both of them feel the same. But let’s return to point of view of Yukino. After she stop laughing in silence until she is tired, she maintains her compose because everyone is watching her.
After the meeting, she asks him he should disillusion of other people, but when she listens to “his strong standpoint”, she feels bad that she doesn’t get even a tiny chance to do anything to make his situation better. But this is the moment, she “interprets and believes” that this is “the real Hachiman (the essence of Hachiman)”, because she believes in what he presents via his firm words/attitude/actions to never surrender to the world or stupid people. I think his firm image in her mind makes she believes that the real Hachiman is solid/unwavering and he will encounter any problems audaciously (just like his bravery earlier).
I don’t say that his actions (double confrontation with problems) are just superficial or illusion after all. Because he does it to change the bad situation or he wants to destroy what he hates (suffer in the unfair world while the others are happily). After his anger gauge is full, he launches blast magic to the target.
But I think that the situation in the school trip is different. After consideration, he doesn’t do the same thing with when he confronts Sagami. But he sacrifices himself but he chooses to “pretend” that he also loves Ebina and confesses his feeling to her.
to give her a chance to escape from this awkward situation.to prevent so Tobe Kakeru (戸部 翔) will not be rejected by her.to maintain the peaceful world as Hayama and Miura Yumiko (三浦 優美子) want.- or to avoid the problem that will reach him and other club members in the future?
- or he starts to understand Hayama’s clique and look at his own relationship?
But Yukino can’t accept this. Because she believes that he would do something to change the situation in front of them (Tobe will be rejected), so when Hachiman says that he will do something, she and Yuigahama “trust” him and let him do it. However, what Yukino sees is Hachiman destroys her expectation. He betrays her trust or the image she believes he would not surrender to the problem, or hates the superficial. Her trust was destroyed by his actions. She believes that she knows him already (know the real Hachiman). That’s why she questions him.
When she sees his actions are not firm/solid like she believes, although she says she is not so sure what she is feeling right now, but she can say what is clearer (she hates how he handles things that way). So when Yukino walks away from him, she would reach to the conclusion unconsciously that
——Even Hikigaya Hachiman tells lies (makes her believe in his image).
“Lying” in Hachiman’s case, is not different from Yukino’s case in LN v5, but it also means she is tricked by “lies” he (and Yukino herself) creates. In an illustration of LN v7, Yukino’s gaze are directing back at him but I notice her sadness or disappointment. Maybe she is so disappointment in him?
But the remained question is, is she aware or not that she also is the one who creates his image?
Why is Yuigahama so angry at hachiman?
For Yuigahama’s case, is not very complex when compares to Yukino’s case. The reason why she is angry at Hachiman is…
Hachiman destroys her chance to confess love to him.
I explained Yukino’s case in reverse timeline (LN v8 > 7 > 6), but I will explain why I assume that Yuigahama is rejected by him. The starting point of her bad ending is…
she will confess love to her crush.
When we see her story via the timeline, she has feelings for Hachiman at the beginning. But she shows that she decides to “go” (confess her love to him), is during the school cultural festival (in LN v6, anime ep11). When both of them are sitting in front of the their classroom, and when she says she will wait for Yukino open her mind so they will be closer. But she also says that…
“But I won’t wait for people that aren’t going anywhere.”
I am not sure he knows or not that people that aren’t going is himself. Anyway, she tells him more that…
“That’s not it. I won’t wait… but I’ll go instead.”
“Go” means that, for people like Hachiman who will not try to approach her, if she waits for him to “come” (aka confess) to her, she would wait for the eternity, so she will do it herself instead.
(TL: confess to him).
But because of his bitter experience, he doesn’t want to be mistaken anymore, so he has not anything to respond to her. But when she “askes” him to treat her Honey Toast next time, he realizes instantly that she wants to go on a date with him. When I read his logic world, he tells himself to not do the same mistake regard to the misunderstanding, but he ends up open his mind to let other people can get closer to him. However, I think he is still frightened little bit to let others reach him, so he asks Yuigahama a little time to consider the place for their hang out (aka date).
In their private conversation during this cultural festival, it happened in LN v6. So I skipped the story in Drama CD v7 (the after party after the festival) to the timeline when they go to the school trip (LN v7), that is the event she decides to confess her feeling to him. If you look via her point of view, after she decides to reveal her feeling to him in the future, she considers that the school trip is the very suitable event that gives the chance/opportunity for boys and girls to confess their feelings to their crush, include with the atmosphere that helps them gather courage up.
remarks that show that Yuigahama will confess to Hachiman during the school trip.
Many remarks that I found out that Yuigahama is going to confess her love to Hachiman, is her attitudes and actions during the trip. If you focus on her when she is with him, you will notice she often approaches him, often more than the usual in just one event.
Blend her intention with different action. When she is talking with him and Totsuka Saika (戸塚 彩加) in the train, when Totsuka tells Hachiman to watch Mount Fuji together, she approaches Hachiman by touching him but pretends to watch the beautiful scene, in spite of she can watch the mountain clearer if she looks near the window.

When she and Hachiman are praying in front of the Chinese round table with the stone on top in the shrine, he notices she is looking incredibly serious when she is praying.

She insists to take photo together with him.

At the Otowa firewall umm… waterfall, there are three choices to pray at this place, your studies, your love, and the longevity of your life, she chooses “the middle”.

In the haunt house, when he stretches out his hand to help her stand but when he is going to move his hand to the pocket, she grabs his hand. I think she is glad he was kind to her.

After they leave from the taxi and walk, she is worried because it seems the love plan to make Tobe get closer to Ebina, doesn’t work well. Hachiman tells her to let it go if Ebina doesn’t want the same, but Yuigahama seems so disappointed for some reason.
If my assumption that she will confess her love to him at the school trip is true, I think she pours her intention to make Tobe and her friend, Ebina become the couple because she herself understands Tobe’s feeling who wants to be Ebina’s boyfriend more than anyone who has no intention like Tobe and her.
So unaccustomed expectation of Yuigahama to help Tobe, is like [“her extremely high expectation” to make her own wish (she becomes Hachiman’s girlfriend) come true] is overwhelming until it is poured to [helping Tobe realize his wish]. That’s why she is the only one who feels so disappointed (more than Hachiman and Yukino) when the love plan to make Tobe and Ebina get closer doesn’t give the good result like she is expecting. When he tells her to let it go if this love plan is impossible, she answers desperately that she wants to do her best (?). Her words and her stubbornness make me notice she pours her own extremely expectation that [her own personal wish] is the cause. And I really think it’s strange to someone who is not related to Tobe’s love directly like Yuigahama will be disappointment just because they can’t make Tobe and Ebina get closer.
And her high expectation to help Tobe, makes her doesn’t consider the feeling of the receiver (Ebina’s feeling), because Hachiman is the one who notice “her too diligent supporting”. So Hachiman points out how it ended if Ebina starts to hate it (force her and Tobe to be the couple), his words make Yuigahama understand but she is still depressed.

She shares him some food because she buys them too much, but when she is watching him chewing the food, she keeps giving him more. It’s like she is happy to watch him doing it.

When she watches the beautiful bamboo forest trail, her reaction and words toward this place are suspicious. She says that this place would be the good place. When he asks her why she thinks this place is good, she abruptly stops and hangs her head in embarrassment and answers that
“L-Like for being confessed to.”
(TL: She would plan to appoint Hachiman to be there so he will be confessed by her at this beautiful place.)
When he hears her answer, he doesn’t get why she used passive voice, his curious and her reaction (embarrassed), make me think she is planning to launch “another love plan” that is not related to Tobe and Ebina. Because when Yukinoshita also agrees with Yuigahama to use this place for confessing love of Tobe, she catches Yukino’s opinion in a hurry so she can hide her own intention from him. Her falter makes me think like this.
Anyway, the love plan of Yuigahama is destroyed completely by him.
While the trio are waiting for exciting event that will descend to Tobe soon, and I am terribly sorry to explain how her love plan is destroyed by Hachiman, that is the cause that makes her is so angry at him.
When he tells 2YY that Tobe would be turned down, that makes both girls feel depressed but judge from their reactions, they would notice this too. But Hachiman tells them more that he will do something, that 2YY don’t doubt what’s on his mind because they trust him. However, it returns that he confesses his feeling to Ebina… that makes her can escape from this situation and Tobe will not fall to the despair.
The reasons why Hachiman decides to do this will not be explained here because this post focuses on Yuigahama’s anger toward him. And since I explained why Yukino was so mad at him, now it’s Yuigahama’s turn.
If my assumption that she is going to confess love to Hachiman is correct, I think she would do it after Tobe’s episode, at the same place. Although she accepts that Tobe would not make it, I still think she would reveal her feeling to her crush anyway (judges from her expression when she scolds him). But while she is watching Tobe is going to confess love to her friend, Yuigahama’s crush walks to her friend and confesses his feeling to her…
If you look via point of view of Yuigahama, can you imagine how she is feeling the moment that her crush says he loves her friend in front of her? It’s not surprising if it is so shocking, following with so painful.
However, her painful feeling is paused temporarily because Yukino is so mad at him and walks out.
But from his short logic explanation, she would understand why he did that. But even so, she must ask him about his feeling to her friend. She must know for real he confessed because it’s the job or he feels like that for real. She never sees Hachiman interested in her friend before, so she doesn’t believe he feels like that to her, but his words just now make her waver. That’s why when he answers he has no feeling to her friend, Yuigahama would relieve. That’s why she tried to hold her smile.
But…
She can’t stand to see him do this again. At first, I thought she didn’t want to see him suffer by sacrificing to help others, but if she hurts because of the simple reason that is more personal?
The painful feeling is pressed until now, started to expanding, in every second she looks at him, talked to him. Because he is the one who destroyed her chance, her hope, like it mean nothing. I think she holds high expectation to this confession and hopes he will accept her feeling. But he destroys that chance, along with her expectation.
It’s not different from “betrayal”.
She never thinks that he will be the one who betrays her feeling instantaneous. She hopes so much. So the painful feeling that is held until now, increased with the anger, sadness and despair. That’s why she can’t hold her tears and her smile, complains with all her might why he doesn’t understand how she feels.
She is not heart-broken by him, she doesn’t even confess love to him. But her suffering from his doing is not different from she is angry loudly but heart-broken voicelessly.
All of these are reasons why Yukino and Yuigahama show their emotions like this to Hachiman. They have totally different past, experiences and reasons. But even so, they feelings are not distant from the whirlpool of negative emotions that every humans would ever feel them.
Everyone always do anything for their own selfish desire, but sometimes other people around them will get involved with, so s/he will be interpreted/judged by the world (people) that s/he did for the others, because their actions effected to other people, if the world is helped, this person is good person, if the world (aka people) hurt, people will see her/him as the bad person. Most people have bad habit to judge others despite they know only superficial level.
The youth/drama of trio still continues in LN v8. If you already read LN v8, you would know that although Yuigahama can let it go (even if she is still hurt), this person still shares her negative feelings at him.

Well made buddy. I think your assumptions are right, but maybe Yui is so frustrated because if Hachiman have some type of depth feelings for her, he would not solve things that way. When you like someone, even if you have doubts about what you feelings are, you will never confess to someone else in front of that person, being a fake or not. After what happened, how you will feel knowing that your crush probably not remotely see you as a potential partner? It’s like, even after she is trying so hard, he never turn his gaze upon her.

Yes, I also agree with you. But “blowing her chance away” of 8man didn’t destroy her hope to be his girlfriend, because his action prevent her sooner confession away from him only, that’s why she still has hope.

About Hayama’s clique in ss1, I think it’s because he asked help from the service club, so 8man assisted him because it’s job. And that time, 8man didn’t hate Hayama yet.
In case of Tobe’s request, I think 8man couldn’t say no because Yui (who wanted to help Tobe because she too, was in the same situation to him (wants to confess her feeling)) convinced Yukino. Yukino couldn’t resist her so she let 8man to decide instead. 8man couldn’t refuse because it’s 2-1 (or 3-1 if we include Tobe). Although 8man wanted to refuse, he had no choice.

hachiman didnt hate hayama yet!? well hikitani is a gud boy he wouldnt hate anyone but dislike any general clique that we know have this alpha theory, yet again he dislike this kind of think since the begining of the story.. he do say he hate hayama tho in respon hayama says he hate him too but if u dive in how the writer want to make hachiman character is u will know he just a simple boy with a kind heart, i don know why everytime i read ur commend thy really doesnt sounds right… u r to feminis to know how a boy think or write story..
n i think u miss one of the most important think why is yukino mad at hachiman since she already know how hachiman self distruct plan solve think n still smiling for him before.. That because the boy she interested in is randomly confess to random girl almost the same reason why yui also mad at hachiman..

I think 8man was avoiding Hayama when they were alone because Hayama stated clearly that he would not be friend with him. And when I read 8man’s monologue when he was in the rooftop (after Hayama released him), it seems 8man …thought about Hayama positively because 8man interpreted that Hayama couldn’t stand to see him hurt others, he is really nice guy.
Until 8man listens to Hayama’s true feeling in LN v7 (he doesn’t want his clique to change because Tobe’s action), 8man doesn’t like Hayama’s attitude and how he obstructed service club’s job. I agree with you that 8man disliked any clique, but his attitude in LN v7 started to change, he understands feelings of Hayama, Yumiko and Ebina. So he can’t hate him to the utmost.
I think you might be right. Most characters in this story are difficult to interpret but very interesting.
