Oregairu Analysis – And Then, Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) Launched Operation Fire Doughnut! (Part 1)
I recommend you to read this post because it reveals Haruno’s worry, how she extracts information from Hachiman, how she trusts him, and her hope and despair toward her sister, Yukino.

- Please read Attention page first, to let you understand that my all analyses are not 100% right. All of them mix with my assumption/guess as well, more or less. If you expect absolute reliable analysis, I can’t provide them to you.
- This Oregairu analysis is full of Spoil. I recommend you to read/watch LN/anime/manga before proceeding.
Operation Fire Doughnut Master Donut, Chiba Perfecture, Tokyo Evening with the setting sun LN v8, Anime Zoku ep 3-4, Manga -Monologue- v7
In Fire doughnut part 1, I concluded many things that happened at that time.
- How Hachiman gains more trust (yes, it is) from Haruno because what he did during the festival that helped her recover Yukino’s self-confidence. You can see that she vends things in her mind and shows him her feeling that is different from when she talked to him during the firework festival.
- How Haruno wants to know if any girls approached him during the school trip in LN v7 but she hides her true intention at the same time by asking him indirectly by using the effective method.
- Haruno’s expectation toward her sister after the school cultural festival because in LN v6, she participated in this festival to help her sister, Yukino, recovers her self-confidence by gaining people’s recognition. But Hachiman made Yukino change her attitude and Haruno’s plan was successful because of him. So she expected that their relationship will be better because Yukino doesn’t need to build the transparent wall between them and family anymore.But the result doesn’t seem to be like Haruno expected. Their relationship is still numb that can be noticed by sending souvenir of Yukino. Nevertheless, her older sister still has some hope because she thinks if Yukino receives the same treatment (recovers self-confidence again by gaining people’s recognition via high position such as school council president), things would be better. However, after Hachiman told her that Yukino doesn’t participate that election, Haruno sinks in the boredom or disappointment because the possibility their relationship will be recovered…
Haruno’s Desire – What Exactly Is She To Hachiman?
Haruno scaaaans Orimoto’s being after Orimoto introduces herself. And then, she introduces her name as well but can’t tell what relationship of her and Hachiman so she …asks him, she snuggles up to him and looks at him from below.
She doesn’t think they would be friends then it should be Onee-san or older sister-in-law. While thinking, she taps her chin and looks at him… She grinned as she can think a great answer! (meddlesome girlfriend)
I notice many interesting things happen in these scenes.
After I read Haruno’s words, I think we can judge her words is up to us. But in my opinion, I assume that she hides her true intention behind this teasing. You can see that she thinks many choices to describe who she is, his onee-san and etc. The last choice she offers to him is “meddlesome girlfriend”.
Actually, just assume with her words only doesn’t make me believe that this is her desire. But I include her action, approaches to him while offering those choices for the consideration. That’s why I think Haruno’s words and action at that time have some value to analyze. But if I don’t review these factors, this is just teasing only, no any deeper meaning.
Personally, I don’t believe this is just normal teasing since I saw every teasing of this character in LN v3-5. Haruno always hides her intention behind these actions. But this time is different, I might overthink about it but I think this teasing in this LN v8, is hiding her desire that is…
“what exactly am I to you?”.
And her answer is what she wants to be.
their relationship is Not Only That.
After I reviewed their conversation below, I suspect that WW wants us to know what it is by leaving this indirect hint via Hachiman’s opinion. ⇓
“Ah, how about a meddlesome girlfriend then?”
Oh dear, what’s with that lovely confession?
After Haruno finish teasing Hachiman. As she (and maybe Orimoto as well) is sociable, they start conversation smoothly. Orimoto comments their seniority relationship is nice. Haruno mentions more that…
“I know, right? Well, that isn’t all there is to it though!”
For Orimoto and others, they would believe as Hachiman said, their relationship is an upperclassman and Maybe this is just my imagination again. But somehow, I feel that Haruno’s word this time has a deeper meaning. I assume that she wants to say that her and Hachiman’s relationship is just not ONLY seniority relationship. Yes or no, her speech flows away and nobody notices…
The Cause of Fire Doughnut
And then, their social talk ended but Haruno crosses her arms in a dignified manner, she starts a new topic with her thin smile. She asks Orimoto about interesting stories back when Hachiman was in the same middle school.
Her question makes Orimoto recall her memories. And then, Haruno incites her more with the cheerful tone. She wants to hear about Hachiman’s love stories!
In my previous post, part 1, when Haruno wants to ask something important to her, she will pose like the commander. And this time, she poses in a dignified manner. Both of her poses are her unique reactions before launches important topics she wants to know. Moreover, I notice her all important topics of hers are about Hachiman.
I read many comments about the reasons Haruno asks Orimoto about Hachiman’s love stories. Some people (& Hachiman as well) think she is just messing around. Some people think she wants to tease him only. They are reasonable to think that way because she acts like that clearly.
For me, I didn’t know why she do something like this so I thought she is just messing around like Hachiman mentioned in anime Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. Zoku (やはり俺の青春ラブコメはまちがっている。続) ep 3. (I should believe in MC’s monologue, right?) However, right now, I have a different comment. Her intention is not just messing around or teasing him or curious about other people‘s past.
What I want to say is Haruno wants to know Hachiman’s past, his love story but not because she is high level sociable so she needs to know everyone’s past, or she wants to has girl talk. I conclude like this because I collect many hints that are her words and actions during this doughnut event.
Such as how she can vend and show her feeling because she trust him, her worry any girls might approach him during the trip, what she wants to be to him, her curiosity toward his love story, just all of these are 4 clues and many hints after this. So I hope what I wrote after and the next part of operation fire doughnut will help you see this viewpoint clearer.
As Orimoto is Hachiman’s middle schooler & they were in the same class. For Haruno, Orimoto is like a valuable treasure box. If she wants to know about his past during middle age, oop, sorry, middle school period, Orimoto is a great primary source! (descend from heaven!)
Haruno is the character who always hides her true intention when she acts. So this time, she pretends to has girl talk with Orimoto and Nakasomething. It’s not because she wants to build the connection with them or sociable, but she wants to reach level 1 data, Hachiman’s love story from Orimoto.
Oregairu Analysis – Drama cd 7 (We will… We will Rock “You”!!)
Just like when she asked level 5 data, his hobbies when he stays at home from his little sister, Komachi in Drama CD v7). Moreover, she asks with cheerful tone to urge Orimoto revealing his love stories.
However, Haruno would never expect this treasure box in front of her is Pandora’s box. And with her curiosity, she doesn’t hesitate to open it but whatever in this box will surprise her more than she is expecting…
Absolute Zero skill makes her mask drops.
With Haruno’s effort, Orimoto finally remembers “an interesting love story” but she doesn’t try to conceal even if that story is involved with herself directly. She said it so easily that Hachiman confessed to her back then…
Orimoto might be a magician who can cast high-level magic unintentionally because she activates her “Absolute Zero skill” in her words, The whole area and all characters there, Hachiman, Orimoto’s friend, was frozen by ice magic.
Even Haruno who asked Orimoto about his love stories, can’t deal with surprise attack. That’s why her mask drops to the floor like that about 0.0000000001 second. But she acts naturally, surprised after know this unbelievable story like Orimoto’s friend. I assume that…
- Haruno is used to be sociable, so she can maintain her expression and talks with two girls like there’s no any heavy damage in her heart.
- Or when we encounter a surprising truth, it takes some time to sense the negative emotions.
ps. In LN and anime, I don’t feel anything or don’t know before that this period about 1-2 seconds only, is everything and has important meaning if I never read manga called “Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. -Monologue- v7”, no way I will know this.
In anime Zoku (or maybe even in LN), I can’t see Haruno’s freezing expression at all, but in -Monologue- manga, mangaka drew her and other people’s expression very well.
In the case of Hachiman, he is Still frozen…
Haruno and Orimoto’s friend (Nakasomething) are very excited after listening to Orimoto’s announce, they join conversation again. Orimoto, as is in the center spotlight, gives them more detail.
Girls like the topic like this. Trio girls build private chat room asap to discuss the hottest topic. Maybe it’s my imagination again but I think Orimoto doesn’t hesitate to be in the center attention. Just like what Hachiman said in LN v4, some people can use the bitter story of others, to discuss with other people so s/he can build relationship easier or gain more attention by using bitter stories of others.
And this time, I feel she is proud someone confessed to her despite she has no feeling to another side. I guess this desire is hidden in everyone’s heart. She just doesn’t realize what she has done. She thinks this is her own story as well so she doesn’t mind to tell, but she doesn’t consider Hachiman’s feeling and doesn’t realize she sacrifices him.
In the case of Haruno…
While he is still frozen and is sinking at the bottom of the deep sea of logic, Haruno responses like she is surprised after she listened to his love story, but Hachiman notices her eyes were dyed with a sadistic color when she says this.
“You don’t say, Hikigaya-kun confessed huh~.”
You can notice that she is saying as if she is stressing that “he” confessed to Orimoto. To explain her feeling at this time, I will not bet that she is in the good mood for sure. With her word and tone, you can imagine when a woman is trying to smile but half of her face is darkening and her eyes are red…
ps. In anime, you will never notice this, because Haruno’s response is different from LN and manga.
So he forces himself to give some response that it happened from a long time ago. Orimoto agrees with him but she comments that’s why it doesn’t really matter. I am not sure if Haruno takes Orimoto’s word (that story doesn’t really matter) too or not and I can’t find any hint that will prove it so I will leave it at that.
While Orimoto and Nakasomething are laughing at something pleasant, I agree with Hachiman that they just want to have fun talking. However, in Haruno’s case, she also laughs but I think she is laughing for a different feeling. Maybe she laughs to something ridiculous, something unpleasant like the one she is looking for confessed to this girl. Maybe some negative emotion in her mind makes her do that.
Even Haruno who just wants to listen to his love story would never expect that the one who got attention from Hachiman is the girl in front of her. If I need to explain her feeling, it is like H@rry’s monster in his stomach goes rampage after he saw Gi*ny and De@n are … It is the feeling that will happen to everyone who has love at least once.
Haruno’s expression and response after she heard from Orimoto that Hachiman ever confessed love to her before, confirm my assumption. Because if she is not jealous, her eyes would not be like that while she is asking him to confirm what she heard just now. You can’t believe words from people completely, but you can look for the truth from their body language. So if she only asks Hachiman about this but has no feeling as I mentioned, her eyes would not change like that. It’s too bad in anime and manga didn’t show her eyes to us.
Oregairu Analysis – “Before” Yukinoshita Haruno Decides to Help Yukino.
For Haruno who can hide her own emotion and intention like professional. You can grasp some truth from her eyes. I notice she shows her emotion via Hachiman’s monologue in LN v4. When Yuigahama pulls him away from Haruno, her eyes tell me “the real emotion” toward Yuigahama. If LN v4 can’t make you realize her emotion during that time clearly, I recommend anime ss1 ep8 and manga -Monologue- v4 (To tell you the truth, I confirm this assumption because of these references too.) We can trust her eyes!
The monster within her chest now is running rampage (what the? She came from HP?) and her health points are almost zero because of the magic Orimoto cast to her, but she still chats with 2 girls smoothly with restraint although she got heavy damage.
…
KABOOOOOM!!!!!
Her wrath has come.
And then, even Haruno’s maximum effort to restrain her fiery emotions, she is still a normal human like everyone who has feelings. Haruno’s monster goes rampage while she is smiling to Orimoto. With what happened, I assume that she doesn’t like Orimoto but she can manage to hold her feeling.
Haruno is the same as Hayama Hayato. She has high intelligence like a supercomputer. For people who she likes or hates when she needs to achieve important info or wants to bomb someone, she can finish her jobs silently and effectively. (Whether they are Hachiman or Sagami or Ha****) In LN, do you still remember Hayato’s quote about or not?
For the things she hates, she’d go the extra mile to crush them.
While Orimoto is talking to Hachiman about Hayama, if you turn to Haruno, you can see that she just blends to the background and her next action is very confusing. That is calling Hayama to meet with these girls. So I will explain about Haruno step by step.
- Right now she dislikes this girl because of the previous event.
- So while she is listening to these girls, Haruno’s monster in her stomach finds the way to vend her raging emotions by usi- umm calling Hayama so she starts to plan something that will gather two people she hates, Orimoto & Hayama in this meeting.
- After she got the plan, she whispers something that the only one who hears her is Hachiman.
“…Hmmm, this might be interesting.”
- She volunteers to call Hayama for them.
This is how she finds the way to satisfy herself and release her fiery emotions by gathering people she hates together and do the next thing that you would know, sending them away with two reasons. I will explain these two reasons in the next post, part 3.
The first reason is for chasing someone who is the danger for her away.
Another reason is to attack and crush someone to satisfy herself.
Every reasons are for satisfying herself.
The Conclusion
This is the conclusion of part 2 (Orimoto & friend’ introduction until Haruno calls for Hayama). I want to reveal the hidden things during this part, especially Haruno’s thoughts toward other characters (Hachiman, Orimoto and Hayama) in each sub events like these.
- Her hidden desire while she is trying to think what she is to Hachiman.
- Why does she ask Orimoto about Hachiman’s love story?
- Her overwhelming raging emotions after she knows the truth from Orimoto that can explain how she is feeling toward Hachiman (the one she is looking forward to) and Orimoto (the one who got his interest).
- Her mysterious thoughts before and when she volunteers to call for Hayama.
My Opinions
Haruno is one of characters that I think she is very difficult to understand. So the fog that blurs the truth might fatigue us that leads to the judgement that is the result because of that fatigue. But I believe that it is not too difficult for us to understand her thought if we try. Manga helped me to check and find the answers. Her expressions are …OMG!!
For this part 2, there are many issues that I didn’t notice them because they were hidden very well by the power of a certain author who created Oregairu. I can feel that he must design and plan how to write Haruno’s feelings/words and actions so they will be hidden. It would not be too much for me to suspect that he tested and checked how his writing will be that reflects his diligence and concentration toward this story and his characters. This also reflects his intention to pray that some readers will find them someday. And after I am focusing on writing Oregairu analyses, I notice that every hidden things WW tried his best to hide, all of them are important things. If we found them, we found the truth.
For Haruno’s case in this part 2, I believe that you too can find the truth. My recommendation is to not be interested of her outer appearance because it is the obstacle to understand her inner feelings.
But this is just only the beginning of the drama, I will reveal the mysterious things during doughnut cafe event to you in the next part. But I can tell you first that she does this for her own self-satisfaction. Self-satisfaction is not good or bad, it is up to the intention in each time. Everything has its factor and they connect each other.

Hey you posted it! Had fun reading it. Those exaggerations made me funny inside(I’m sorry if you’re serious on explaining on that part, I just can’t stop laughing.) Anyways, Haruno is a deep character. I like her character for reasons unknown. I’m just drawn to her, she is like a Spider and I’m just a measly fly caught on her Web. Or you could say that Hachiman is the Fly and Haruno is the Spider. Also, I never ever read the Manga so, I never knew that certain expressions are added them. Such as aforementioned on your analysis that she pauses and frozes. If Watari is monitoring closely on the Manga/ working closely. That scene and that expression PLAYS a VITAL part on who she truly is. Haruno is so mysterious/deep and with that facade I’m really amazed how can Watari write such a complex character. And now for the ending, I would say something crappy: HaruXHachi please make it happen Watari! VN route or Spin-off doesn’t matter! I need that Onee-san! :3

Those exaggerations are from my imagination but started from character’s reactions/expressions that I found. I like you enjoy my fantasy and realistic explanation. Hohohoho I tried to write fantasy mixed in my analysis so I can explain more and it will not make you bored too. (AZ, Thunderbolt, dark magic and chest monster)
Your comment about her made me agree she would be spider but not poisonous. She always lets her target go after she achieved her purpose. IMO, she is like ninja or spy. :3
If my memory serves me well, in manga, the page that Orimoto tells Hachiman’s love story to Haruno and nakasomething, is like Double page spread for me (just a certain speech from Orimoto). Maybe it’s just me again, but mangaka wanted to show everyone’s expressions fully and clearly.
Orimoto and Hachiman’s expression are normal for me. However, a certain character’s expressions made me pause… completely.
I look at 2 Haruno’s expressions in this double page carefully and I swear I never see her expressions be like that before.
I agree with you she is complex character. A pro spy who wears camouflage. Agree more about WW’s writing skill. I don’t know Oregairu is the first work of him but he will be legend when LN ends for sure.

Also, DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD? WHAT! That means something. Really! I’m not an avid manga reader so correct me if I’m wrong that Double Page Spread parts of manga are usually the vital thing or important scene on a released chapter right?
Also as far as I’ve heard, there is a new VN on the works. We could only hope that it would be made and there are more routes. Also I hope a English Version of the first VN would be released. *sigh Anyways Looking forward to Part 3 of the fire doughnut!

I admit, i am really enjoying this analysis . Honestly, finding Hachiman/Haruno stuff is become more and more difficulty.

Two things are in my mind
1. Maybe she is jealous (She wants to confirm if he still has feelings for Orimoto)
2. Maybe she is sad for her sister (She wants to confirm if he still has feelings for her because she Ships Hachiman for her sister )

Orimoto: “Yeah it was a long time ago, so who cares now, right?”

to be honest its hard to find someone like haruno in real life
atleast for me i have never met someone who people claim to be perfect
and all im thinking about when watching this analyses is study psychology/sociology because i feel the need to read people
and not letting someone use you or abuse you
that is the best thing about this show, the reality of it!

I too, never see someone like her in real life before. Actually, I want to meet someone like that. To know or to be friend with someone like her who always cares for the one she loves & doesn’t mind to get hurt, would be fortunate for me.
But unfortunately, I ever encountered someone who has so good personality but I notice something within her/his mind is similar with Hayato… Or that would be Hayato ver. 2? The daily fake show of that person to trick people around is something I don’t want to watch. You’d not believe how many people can be tricked by that level 1 superficial layer so easily. It seems 8man’s exp makes me see people better. This skill helps me a lot. Even Hiratsuka-sensei’s teaching is good. I need to maintain my manner although I’m talking with people I dislike.
To not let others trick us is necessary skill for the age like this. But to not let ourselves to be like characters who intend to walk the rose path, is the way I try to walk.

The worst thing about be aware of the fake people is that you see the true face of people.
So instead of saying that a lot of people or most people are great, you’ll say that most of them have some needs from you.
I think i’m in the stage when you suspect everything around you.

Yeah, I still remember when she forces 8man to that date. Using people against their will isn’t something I’m fond of. Even if she’s my fav character, I don’t need to like her blindly. For example, the difference between Haruno & other fake people is at least she has sincerity/love/justice (they are so difficult to see these though). So she’s not good or bad but she faced many factors that made her become like that, I guess.
So I agree with you about the worst thing about be aware of the fake people is that you see the true face of people, Especially when the true face of some fake people are like that as we suspected, or even worse, that can count as the worst thing. But I’ll not let that bother me much since we have freedom to find the environment we like, as Ebina suggested.
