Do you still remember when Hikigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) and Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃) meet her older sister, Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) for the first time at the shopping mall? It happens in “Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. (やはり俺の青春ラブコメはまちがっている。), Oregairu (俺ガイル)” LN v3. They meet coincidentally and have some chat. However, do you know something is happening behind their meeting?
When Hachiman gazes enough into her, Haruno also gazes into him.
It is difficult to observe Hachiman via Haruno’s point of view. She is an heir of the elite family, excellent in everything, so clever and has many talents. So I want to know what she is thinking while she is observing a boy beside her. What she finds out and decides later that Hachiman is very interesting.

Haruno and Hachiman’s gazes are very important since the beginning of their story that is the reason why she is looking out for him in through the Yahari story.

The starting point of this Analysis
In LN v8, there are many things that made me wonder. One of my doubt is in c3, After Haruno said goodbye to Hachiman and Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人) at the donut shop. Hayato tells him that she seems to be quite fond of him. At the very least, she looks interested. If she is not interested, she wouldn’t do anything. She’ll meddle so much with what she likes to the point of killing it.
Hayato’s words above made me wonder when Haruno started to be interested in Hachiman? Umm… Let’s see.
- Maybe during the school festival? It is possible. Because she praised Hachiman after he sacrificed himself to force Sagami Minami (相模 南) to finish her job in LN v6.
- Or could it be during firework festival? She tried some tricks to check his thought as well. (ps. Firework festival happened in v5)
- She is quite fond of him as well (attacks him with her elbow and closes to him) in v4 but I remember he doesn’t do anything that interests her in this v4 either. Besides, If the result of my analysis earlier about “Y” of Hayato is collect, the starting point would happen before v4.
Yes! v3, So I read when Haruno meets Hachiman for the first time. Haruno is a very mysterious woman because of her Orichalcum mask. Her mask is very thick that he and Yukino don’t know what she is thinking but he feels something. So I analyze her in this v3, but before that, I need to summarize events back then.

Part 1
A woman meets Yukino and greets her. Hachiman turns and sees beauty. She apologizes to her friends that she will follow them later. He feels something like deja vu and feels the distinct unease too.
Part 2
Haruno asks Yukino if they are dating. Then she asks her more if he is her boyfriend.
Earlier, I thought Haruno’s curious is normal since she saw her sister is hanging out with a boy (Yukino-chan is hanging out with a boy!!) and she never met this boy before. But after I read LN v3 carefully to find out Haruno’s thoughts, I think there’s a significant point that becomes the reason why I decided to write about it. Because it’s related to the topic of this analysis.
Part 3
Yukino’s sister (Haruno) introduces herself to him so he does the same too. She acts like she is thinking after she heard his surname and scans his whole body. This makes him chill go down his spine but this feeling disappears after she changed her expression and announced to call him “Hikigaya-kun”.
Part 4
Hachiman compares both Yukinoshita sisters quietly but he feels unease again so he gazes on Haruno but meets her eyes only fleetingly, she instantly changes her attention to Yukino and reaches out Pan-san, but the loud and clear voice from her sister freezes Haruno & Hachiman.
Part 5
After she recovers from freezing, Haruno apologizes to her younger sister because she touches valuable gift that she got from Yukino’s boyfriend. Hachiman refuses he is not but she uses this chance to poke his cheek with her index finger nonstop. Yukino tries to stop her but it doesn’t work. Haruno’s body presses against him as well as certain body parts hit him like Moh@mmed Ali.
Part 6
Yukino stops her meddlesome sister with an icy stare, Haruno apologizes to her again but turns to whisper near Hachiman’s ear about her sister. He startles involuntarily and his reaction makes her wonder what’s wrong. So he tries to excuse himself but Yukino shots his excuse with no mercy.
This situation is not strange for us because it’s normal to ask Yukino these questions since Haruno saw her sister is hanging out with a boy. But after I read LN v5, I think there’s a significance in this event.
I intend to summarize this shortly but it’s longer more than I think. My eyes and finger are burning but this time my brain will be too.
Analysis with Nietzsche’s quote
I pick Nietzsche’s quote to this Yahari analysis because somehow, behaviors of Hachiman and Haruno (or should I say their human observation skills) are similar to this quote. Because Hachiman can feel the uneasiness from Haruno so he observes her to find the answer, while Haruno notices his reaction is different from others she ever met, so she approaches him to check the answer. I feel they think another side is abyss or the mystery. So to observe her/him in order to clear their doubtfulness is very normal.
If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.
And with his quote, I tried to read Haruno’s mind to understand her thought toward a certain boy in front of her eyes. I might be wrong but I will do my best!
Analyze Part 1.
Haruno meets her sister and a stranger who would come to that shop together with her. She would think how super rare her sister goes shopping with a boy. Because she (and her mother – LN v10 c2) knows that Hayato is the only one boy who is her childhood friend and no other boys are in the same status in her memory. So it’s normal for her to want to know about this person. However, in LN, Hachiman starts to sense some unease feeling when he sees Haruno for the first time despite they don’t talk yet.
I suspect WW tries to use their first meeting to make Hachiman/Haruno is curious to the other. As the reader, you would see Hachiman is anxious to know the mysterious thing of this woman. But if we turn the coin or change the doer, you would see Haruno is the one who is anxious to know the mysterious thing of this boy. If my suspicion toward WW’s objective is correct, it means he uses a character to tell the story of another character.
And if I believe in the writing technique of WW to present the character’s feeling in order to explain another character’s feeling, I start to doubt that even the first strange feeling of Hachiman, that Deja Vu, might happen in Haruno’s mind too. What I want to say is, it is possible that when she met him, she also feels Deja Vu that can be his voice or his look, etc. Why do I think this unbelievable thing? Because I don’t believe that Hachiman is the only one who feels this. I think it is kinda …weird if it is like that. So if he feels like that when he heard her voice, it is possible that she also feels the same, is familiar with his appearance or voice, etc.
I am not sure when Haruno notices his reaction and decides to check on him or not, because it’s possible that she would notice his uneasiness at this point. But maybe she doesn’t notice his feeling at all, or he doesn’t show his feeling so she can notice yet. In my opinion, when I reviewed LN only, I had no clue when she notices his feeling. But with manga @Comic, I found the answer that you can read in “Analyze Part 3” below.
Analyze Part 2
Haruno asks Yukino if she and Hachiman are dating. Then she asks her more if he is her boyfriend.
After I re-read LN v3. I think Haruno’s interest at this point is the relationship between her sister and Hachiman, because as her older sister who lives with Yukino, and the only boyfriend of Yukino that Haruno knows is Hayato. So to see her sister is hanging out with someone is very surprising! How does this happen!? Something like that. Therefore, Haruno knows very well about Yukino’s past and trauma that are related to people around her. So the scene in front of her is super premium ultra rare.
That’s why, at this point, I conclude that her interest is focusing on their relationship. To check the answer is very easy, when she asks Yukino, you can see that Yukino shows the usual reaction to her, the same attitude like every time Haruno approaches her. So, Haruno can confirm so easily that there’s nothing between both of them.
But in the next event, I think her interest will change to another thing…
Analyze Part 3
Haruno, the explorer, introduces herself to him and he does the same too. In LN, I have no clue what she is thinking.
- Q: Is she connecting his surname that is familiar with the car accident?
- A: I believe it is possible. If I connect two hints, her opinion about Limo during firework festival (LN v5) and how her mother can connect things and realize Hachiman was the victim in that car accident almost instantly after Hachiman introduced her in v13, it means I start to believe that Haruno who would be the similar quality as her mom, would connect things and realize this boy was the victim at that time after she heard his name only.
- Q: Or does she just think his name is familiar but can’t remember when and where she heard this name for the first time?
- A: Possible. But I don’t believe this that much since Haruno is always worried about her sister. So if there was an accident, I think it is normal for Haruno to know everything. Even her mother knows Hachiman’s surname so it means a certain siscon must remember this despite it passed about 1 year.
That’s why I believe she remembers this boy in front of her was the victim of that accident.
But I assume that she notices his reaction, he shivers after she scanned him. Or should I say, while she is absorbed in thought, she doesn’t wear her cheerful mask. I mean …at that moment (if I believe in @Comic), he can see “something in her eyes”. That’s why he feels uneasy. I think his feeling this time, when he sees her behavior, is stronger more than the earlier feeling he felt while he was watching her walk to him and Yukino. She thinks this is kinda “strange reaction” because no one who met her for the first time will act like that. So this is when Haruno’s interest toward this boy increases that lead to finding the answer latterly.
In the story, Hachiman’s curious and worry increase as we read in LN v3 but I also feel her curious also raise.
With this, both Hachiman and Haruno are interested in another one. Both of them can notice the reaction of another side because now their positions are closer. But the different thing is he is feeling uneasy, while the question about her (Is she also feeling the same?) is something I can’t find the answer. However, this interaction makes them want to know.
However, no matter how many times I tried to interpret her thought at this moment in LN, I can’t find any absolute clues that can help me confirm that Haruno notices Hachiman’s reaction or she is suspecting that he can see through her mask. But the interesting hint that makes me think that she would notice his uncomfortable feeling and she is wondering if he can notice “her”, is in part 4. ⇑
- In manga @Comic, This moment can be interpreted more clearly. Haruno squints her eyes and looks at him. Her gaze makes him feel uneasy for some reason. I think manga @Comic is a reliable reference that can help you see their important moment.
- However, after I watched this scene in anime and read LN again, I think there’s something wrong in this anime scene either since the author didn’t describe her expression in detail except her eyes and behavior as if she is thinking. That’s why if I consider this scene only, there’s nothing wrong.
Analyze Part 4
Hachiman tries to observe her because he doesn’t understand about this uneasy feeling, on the other hand, Haruno wants to observe him check the reason behind his reaction earlier.
After Haruno notices his reaction when they exchanged the introduction, I assume that she decides to use human observing skill, she defuses with the broad grin and announces she will call him Hikigaya-kun. As she expects, with her smile, he doesn’t feel shiver anymore. He is kinda confused instead (because she changed her expression from the serious ⇒ amiable face). And this would be the first time she switches her friendly mask to ease his feeling because I think she notices that he is feeling uncomfortable.
And the important hint I said earlier to show that Haruno notices the remarkable reaction of Hachiman that connects with her next action to observe him to find if he sensed something from her. That means she is not interested in their relationship but she wants to “finding him” (in her eyes, he is the novelty).
When he is looking another way, she gazes at him with the same feeling with Hachiman’s. Since he is suspecting about her, this can imply that she also is suspecting about him. However, while she is doing that, he turns to her and gazes on her. This is the moment their gazes meet. This moment is superb because she doesn’t know he will turn to her way so they meet eyes fleetingly!! Because of that, she feels as if she was caught off guard. That’s why she tries to turn to Yukino instead to dissemble her action just now. lol This hint makes me can confirm the truth behind their gazes.
My personal feeling toward this moment.
Peeping someone is not the behavior you will let the target know your action so if that person caught your doing, it is the instinct or the self-defend to end this observation so the person you looked at will not know your intention and even action. To see Haruno looked for Hachiman like this (that connects with what Hayama says in LN v4, she is looking for you (Hachiman)), was caught and escapes is …so cute!! It is similar to the scene when the girl was looking for someone behind the tree but that person noticed her peeping so she hides behind the tree. Hiding behind the tree for Haruno is to cling the sanctuary, her sister or her sister’s belonging, Pan-san.
Actually, the moment like that is normal to me but I would feel this is so cute because it requires the effort and time to understand this moment. After I understand how things happen that are her actions and feelings, the pleasure toward these things starts to occur in my mind, the feeling I found it by myself is like I got the big reward. To sum it up, if this scene is not mysterious and I can catch her feeling so easily, I might not feel anything since I witnessed something like this many times in other media.
It’s too bad that this moment was not shown in anime and other manga. I can dare say that some watchers might be surprised by their interaction. Although I know that this doesn’t mean a romantic moment after all if I consider only this moment. So I will let you decide if this is one of the steps of Romcom or how this moment happens in anime. It hides the important meaning definitely. Activate your tracing, a higher-level version of Projection that creates what’s in your mind to be the reality!! Or if you can’t imagine, I recommend you to read LN v3. This how-to works for me!
It’s like when people notice what you are doing secretly, you would do something to hide what you are doing or your objective. It’s an automatic reaction. When Haruno turns to her little sister and pretends that she is interested in her Pan-san, this is how she tries to cover her action and objective from the one she peeped at, Hachiman. (But I feel sorry for Haruno to cover her actions just now by trying to touch Pan-san of Yukino, Her life is in danger (kidding) because while she is escaping from “Eyes of Hachiman”, but her HP remains 1 point after tasted the absolute zero from her sister).
You would notice how her tone is sprightly unnecessary when she talks about Pan-san.) Yes, I can tell you that she is pretending to be interested in Pan-san but I don’t mean that this is the deception or something. It’s like …the white lie. No one hurt from this simulation.
Analyze Part 5
After she recovers from freezing, Haruno apologizes to her younger sister because she touches valuable gift that she got from Yukino’s boyfriend. This is an effective way to make an awkward situation better. I can see that she can live in society with the least problem (or if there’re any problems, she can manage them) because of this skill. And I will let you focus on the next point.
When Haruno says she is sorry to touch the gift Yukino’s boyfriend gave, I think this is how she tries to ease the discomfortable atmosphere just now by saying something that interests the listener(s) to the other thing. I can feel she knows well that her sister would feel annoyed and even reject her opinion after listening to the word “boyfriend”. However, it seems the boy beside her is the one who denies it instead.
When Hachiman refuses he is not Yukino’s boyfriend, Haruno uses this chance to poke his cheek with her index finger nonstop. It’s like when he talks to her, he opens this chance to Haruno (unintentionally) but she doesn’t miss this chance. Yukino tries to stop her but it doesn’t work. It’s because her older sister always does what she wants, but I think she doesn’t want to let this opportunity to go or “finding if this boy can sense something within her” is still the top priority. That’s why she continues to approach him. Haruno’s body presses against him as well as certain body parts hit him like Moh@mmed Ali to lower his defense.
Haruno is the sun so her HP can heal automatically when Hachiman starts to talk to her, she uses this gold chance to pierce his defense by attacking with her javelin finger and absorb his HP with her brea… I mean her touching. Finally, her strategy makes her can approach him enough and it can hide her intention from him at the same time, Hachiman can’t know her objective. This is how she is going to check if he can sense something from her for real, or she just imagines things.
Analyze Part 6
But Yukino starts to be upset about Haruno’s behavior because her older sister didn’t listen to her so she stops her again. I think this time Haruno needs to stop attacking him for now because her little sister is more upset. So she turns to apologize to her younger sister and acts as if she is guilty to ease her anger. But I don’t think Haruno feels sorry for real, because when she turns to approach Hachiman again, she doesn’t show the same expression anymore. So I think this is how Haruno …controls Yukino’s emotion to not worse. I don’t mean she wants to control others’ emotion or something but to maintain their feeling to not reach the red zone. In anime, you can see so clearly. But I never think her behavior is bad or something despite this is one of her acts, acts as the older sister who is warning him. I think that’s how she acts to other people while she has her own objective. She’s good at dealing with people. But this case is she uses her truth (she will not forgive if he makes her sister cry) and acts as the good older sister (this would be the truth too). Using truths to act… how complicating.
My old assumption
But when Haruno pretends to whisper to Hachiman about her sister but her real intention is to let him see her eyes so she can confirm her doubt earlier. When he sees her eyes (or should I say abyss), he startles involuntarily.
At this point, I ever analyzed that Hachiman startles when Haruno whispers to him because Haruno lets him see her eyes. But this assumption would be wrong because I used the reference of manga Monologue only, to analyze how Haruno is going to check on Hachiman. And I thought that this reference was good enough to explain how she shows her own self to him. Therefore, if Hachiman reacts because he senses something in her eyes, it is the low possible since she is whispering to him, it’s hard to see her eyes while she is whispering near his ear. That’s why I think he senses something because of another thing, and that is…
New Assumption
But when I re-read LN again, I started to think that there’s something “strange” in her words or voice when she is whispering to him that can’t notice in anime. ⇓
When I am listening to her, I don’t see anything strange in her words and even her voice. She says smoothly as if she has no any hidden intention. On the other hand, if you read her words when she is whispering, you will notice something.
“Sorry, ya know? Yukino-chan’s a sensitive girl……so you’d better watch out for her, Hikigaya-kun.”
Actually, if Hachiman doesn’t react to her words, I would not notice anything. So I decide to analyze speeches above. It’s possible that there’s something hidden in her friendly tone of voice. But the problem is I can’t confirm if this assumption is true or not. In LN, Hachiman doesn’t describe anything in detail more than he feels unease and flees from her. So the reference I can rely on is manga.
- In manga Monologue, look at the color of speech bubbles of Haruno. And in manga @Comic, look at how she approaches and whispers to him. These two references will show you her hidden intention.
So I will conclude that there’s something hidden in her, not only her voice but from Haruno herself.
Update: (20/12/2018)
After I published this post for years, WW shows how Haruno is overprotective when it comes to her sister and how her little sister is as Haruno said. So I returned to review Haruno’s words again, especially the meaning in her words above. Therefore, I also re-reviewed the moment when she tells Hachiman to not make her sister cry or she will not forgive him. After I reviewed these two moments many days, I finally found the answer that Haruno is not telling some jokes at all. Although her manner will make us think she is not serious or she just teases him, I notice she is using the truth about her sister to …reveal her (let me call this, “the Haruno”, not usual Haruno) beside this boy. This attempt is to find the answer I wrote above, to test if he can sense “HER” or not. …It’s very difficult to explain her action and the much more difficult is her objective and extract to words.
Is Haruno worried about Hachiman?
But the question that if she tries to warn him about her sister, …I am not sure if she wants to warn him for real. But if I need to believe, I believe this is her another objective since she saw both of them (Yukino and Hachiman) are hanging out that it means it is possible that their interaction will continue in the future. Haruno knows her younger sister is sensitive from her own direct experience and took heavy mental damage because of things between both of them in the past. So choosing Yukino’s truth and mixing her goodwill toward Hachiman in order to test him …are what I can call these two opinions (red and green words) as “HER, the true Haruno”, got it?
“Sorry, ya know? Yukino-chan’s a sensitive girl……so you’d better watch out for her, Hikigaya-kun.”
…It seems deliberating my own belief makes me find the answer implicitly, the answer to the question if Haruno intends to warn him about her sister. Actually, when I didn’t read LN v10-12, it’s no way I can sense this is Haruno’s worry at all. She said her sister is sensitive but I think the speaker is the same but with a different reason. She is on the watch because she was her “big sister” before (if you know what I mean).
With this, you can see that after Hachiman flee from her, she closes her eyes that is the sign that she is in the mode of the rumination, it’s as if she doubts about him. She confirms he really can sense something for real. Finally, her mission is finished! But it seems he feels nervous again so she does the same thing again by pretending to ask him that she made something to make him hate her. I think it’s because she is really good at dealing with people, she knows how men will respond if she asked like this. So she acts like that again to ease his worry. Yukino’s comment also helps her to make this boy forget about her action just now by laughing, praise him and hitting his back. All of these behaviors of Haruno are how to make him forget her operation or interest him with the other thing (for this case is how his ear is sensitive). Smack! Smack!
In this LN v3, Haruno’s human observing skill was not activated at this time only. In v5, she uses this skill when she asks a certain question to Hachiman. The suspicious title and alias of Zaimokusa
Zaimokusa Yoshiteru (材木座 義輝) ever let Hachiman review the plot he wrote. What I want you to focus on is “the title and alias”.

After I finished analyzing this post again, I start to feel how those certain characters in his alias are doing and how their reaction changes the world as his title said, how two elements react each other and how their reaction makes the big and impossible result happens. I …NEED TO ESCAPE FROM THEIR FIGHT!!

The most interesting truth behind Haruno’s action and even her objective I wrote above, all of them reflect her own original desire that connects with the third memorandum in LN v10 and what she says to Hachiman when both of them are walking in the same reference. So I will conclude that her wish is she wants someone to find her who is lost in the whirlpool of despair because of the reason in that memorandum.

Mrs.Yukinoshita might be not the only one who is not pleased With Yukino’s Decision.
When Haruno talks about her mother is angry at Yukino who lives alone, I notice later that it’s also possible that Haruno is the one who is not pleased that her little sister runs away from home. Of course, her mother would feel the same, but when I saw a scene when she whispers to her little sister in @Comic v3, she is not smiling when she tells Yukino or I should say… when no one is watching her expression. And when her sister answers that it’s nothing to do with Haruno, Haruno says as if she is at fault to interfere Yukino’s business.
But I assume that Haruno doesn’t think this is her little sister’s business only, that is related to something that is related to Haruno herself too, that is her loneliness or discontent because Yukino chose to live alone. So I suspect that she is another one who doesn’t like Yukino’s decision but she uses a word, “mom” to tell her own dissatisfaction with her younger sister.
“Yeah, you’re right. It has nothing to do with me,”
(Try to interpret these words. ↑ = “No you are wrong. It has to do with me (Haruno).”)
“As long as you’ve put thought into it, it’s fine, Yukino-chan. I was trying to help, but I was butting in. Sorry about that.”
(She doesn’t think she butts in Yukino’s business, because this has to do with Haruno’s life too.)
When I consider the whispering and apology of Haruno that are full of words that are not honest, I can say that she shows her loneliness and suffering toward her sister, so I conclude that she is the one who is not happy that Yukino ran away from family (that means she ran away from Haruno as well) and lives alone. Therefore, I think she knows well why her younger sister lives alone.
déjà Vu
This is a hint that most people hardly didn’t pay attention but I think it’s understandable. So let me write about this just once. Do you remember when Hachiman looks at Haruno for the first time when she is going to walk to him and Yukino?
A sense of déjà vu assailed me. But more than that – more than anything – I was tormented by the feeling of distinct unease.
What he is feeling is two things but what he is feeling the most is the clear unease feeling. That’s why “déjà vu” was not mentioned. I will not say this too much because I have no solid evidence. But I will point that WW likes to leave important hints silently and can lead us to concentrate on other things. Hachiman’s story this time is not different, I was led to focus on his unease feeling, more than another hint, déjà vu. If that clue was not mentioned so often, that is like the jewel. What we can do is digging it.
That’s why, about déjà vu. This is the hint that is like the sign of the beginning of Hachiman and Haruno’s destiny/fate. Also, this word is mentioned just one time only and is hidden quietly. So I will be looking forward to the ending of this story and I will look back at this important hint again. However, as I said, I have no solid evidence that will help me confirm that this hint is very important or not. So I will leave you to interpret.
PS. This hint is hidden silently to the point it was not shown in any other references… lol
Mission report from a certain explorer (or should I say, ninja).
- During her mission, Haruno can confirm that Hachiman can sense something within the usual Haruno.
- With all of these, she finds out he is a very interesting boy and decides to look out for this amazing person! ♥♥ (and she would tell Hayato about him later.)
Then what happened after Haruno met Hachiman and before the summer camp?
After she met him and found out he is “very interesting” as I mentioned above, I suspect she would meet with Hayama latterly, before the summer camp period in LN v4.
If you doubt why Hayama observes Hachiman during the summer camp and tells him in the end that he would not be friend with him during the summer vacation that is the next event after Hachiman met Haruno, you can read in this post – “Oregairu Analysis – Finally, “Y” in Hayama Hayato’s Heart Was Revealed”. There I revealed about his “Y” but I also explained Haruno’s timeline during the gap between LN v3-4 (after Haruno met Hachiman – before the summer camp) I suspect more that she would tell Hayama about “this interesting boy”.
Now I will end this analysis about Haruno and Hachiman’s gazes for now. Don’t believe my assumptions before you find the answer in various medium. If you are confused about this topic, although you read LN, I recommend you to read manga @Comic v3 because it really helped me to understand her thoughts. Manga Monologue is helpful too. While anime is confusing for me, but some scenes are consistent with LN as well. Her thoughts are difficult to understand, but if you don’t stop to interpret, I am sure you will reach the truth for sure.

The analysis on this page mentioned what happened in LN v3. But in LN v4, you will know why Hayama observes Hachiman so much and tries to compete with him. Everything has their own reasons. Because a certain woman he likes is interested in Hachiman.
After Haruno knows Hachiman can see right through her, and many things happened. It appears that she trusts him enough to vent her feeling to him when she is having problems.
What will happen if the one Haruno is interested, ever confessed his feeling to another girl before? Operation Fire Doughnut starts in this period! My feelings as an older experienced man that had the curse of being popular and oblivious in my youth:
Haruno is a predator that sleeps with good looking high school boys. And I’d think it’s about obvious that at some point in the past, she succeeded in seducing and sleeping with Hayama. And I also think it’s probably likely that Hayama was family betrothed to Yukino. And I’m betting that’s why Yukino is estranged and lives alone.
It all fits. It all fits so much it’s scary. It would explain Hayama completely. That being said, Hayama slept with…. four different characters so far. He said it himself. He’s not a nice guy.

A bit of an unrelated question but you think with the right method and time and effort, could 8man be exceptional at mathematics. In OreGairu wiki it said that 8man is terrible at math, and it struck me as odd as a person who is as intelligent and methodical like 8man find mastering mathematical concept difficult. Now but since 8man is quite proficient in English (since he use specific term in English like out-sourcing and sometimes correct English mistake) he could go to Khan academy or something to learn math. It’s something that has been bugging me for a while and it’s more of my problem than the novel’s. What do you think?
Personally, I think with the right method and a bit of times and effort, 8man can be extremely proficient in math or any natural science subjects and maybe chose his career path differently and separate himself from other people (but that isn’t really what he really want isn’t it?). It’s quite fascinating the more you think about it actually.
p.s. I love the characters of OreGairu so much i really want to know what happen inside their head (STALKER ALERT!!!) as well as their strength and weakness. I’d love to get my hand on the novel itself but unfortunately it’s not available in my country so your blog really gives me more insight into the characters.

I actually never think about that. Interesting. If you are interested my opinion, let see…
I am not surprised if 8man will be good in Math because I read Hiratsuka-sensei mentions about his thought management is …orderly (in LN v5). So I think he can get high scores if he will solve mathematical problems. However, it seems he got very low scores in this subject.
I’m quite good in Math so I am confused why 8man who is smarter than me (IMO), doesn’t go well in this. So maybe this is just my assumption. He likes to observe humans and I notice he concentrates in this observation more than try to solve mathematical problems. When he tries to think about people/society, his interest was pulled to that way. Moreover, I see him likes to read books, so maybe his memory is full of English words and technical terms automatically.
All of what he concentrates are not involve with math much. And if you want to solve mathematical problem, you need to concentrate in it too (include remember formulas), what 8man interested is kinda… out of Math realm.
However, I notice he is quite good in science (since Humanity subject is one of science too). So I think he can be quite good in Math either, because his thought process is suitable for this subject. But too bad he is not interested in this, I don’t see why he will get good grade if he don’t think he can solve them well. No motivation in math, no way you can solve it. Because to me, Math is challenge.
Another thing about Math is, if you think it’s too difficult before you try to solve it, you will end up can’t solve it for real.

I see 8man tried his best to attend Sobu so he will not attend the same school as his classmates because of his suffering back then. But choosing science path will not help him to be “the loner” or “has more friends” more than this. He is still the loner no matter which career path he chooses. I think …8man believes the career path he chooses is the best choice, because he interested in Humanity and reading hobby helps him to decide this (just as Haruno advises him in LN vol 10).
Moreover, if 8man chooses science path so he can continue to be the loner, I don’t think he will sacrifice his important decision just to escape from environment he is not fond of. Attending top level high school to escape from nightmare is runaway but he will gain advantage in many things so it’s fine.

All of these are just my personal opinion, and maybe it’s not like 8man actually thinks but I see his good potential and also think he can be great no matter which path he will choose. But he seems like and never bored for Humanity subject already.

Talk about career choices, have you ever wonder about what Haruno studies in university? In the wiki it is said that she’s studying for a Bachelor of Science degree, but what kind of science? Since she suppose to be the next head of the family’s company i would assume she’s studying something related to economic. But she also seems to have an understanding of human nature and social structure (her quote on how a common enemy improves the group and technological advancement) so psychology or sociology or even social engineering! So many possibilities.
Speaking of that, why does WW-sensei keeps this information away from us? Is it because it is unrelated to the plot or he is looking for the right time to reveal it? Quite a lot of food for thought.

Well, company of Haruno’s father is construction company (if my memory is not wrong, Haruno is CEO of this company too). I think with Faculty of Engineer of National university, she would study for her family’s business. Because her family orders her to study this faculty. If we connect the faculty she is studying and her family’s business, I assume her family wishes her to has Engineer knowledge will benefit for the business.

In my opinion only, I think Haruno is suffering from humans around her (family) for a long time, so she is like other characters who are suffering because of similar cases (Hachiman, Yukino, Hayama). She would spend time to learn about human’s mind (I judge from her reading hobby and this memorandum from LN v10). To learn is to try to understand about them and also to search how to solve it.

Yes, a lot of yummy food to taste. Maybe the author wants us to notice and to brainstorm, I guess. I also wonder which faculty Haruno actually wants to study because it seems Engineer is not the subject she wants to learn. Maybe humanity, maybe something the musical since she is the conductor.

i always think haruno misunderstand yukino though (like how yukino chase after her or yukino have crush for hayama) that makes their realationship doesnt going well like hachiman n komachi.. and their somehow looking materialistic mother ( well we kinda can expect if there is mariage arragement with the eldest of their family tho or how insignificant random ppl like hachiman is)making all this think worse..
basicaly i don really like haruno as much as i don like that play safe hayama.. and everytime i read ur analyz thy make me think u really over credit them.. u know it feels like someppl just boasting how awesome my archenemy is but then again i am just kidding n waste time here 😀
but then again i really hope yukino nvr have crush on hayama that will really dish out all the righteous pretender haruno for sure

Their relationship (Hayama & Yukinoshita sisters) was not different from other groups, everyone looks happy and sincerity when they lived in peaceful. But they will do anything to survive or escape from danger, even sacrifice someone who is close (this explains Hayama). Therefore, they lived in unhealthy environments (family & school). The bad end was written, but the trial in the school would rush the deadline. So they were close at first, but they ended up separate after each one felt like s/he was betrayed by another, or couldn’t answer expectation of another one.
I agree with you about Haruno’s misunderstanding (her sister loved Hayama). If Yukino treated him like when she treated 8man, anyone might think she was interested to him, include Haruno. I think it’s nearly impossible that Haruno didn’t notice her sister’s action since she is siscon and spent with them so often.
About arranged marriage, I wrote about that before LN v12 since there’re something fishy about Haruno, Hayama and her family in LN v10-11. But when they announced that Oregairu will end at LN v14, I started to be sure, because number pages in LN v13-14 might not be enough to launch exciting event like that. However, Mrs.Yukinoshita , the powerful being who can order people as she sees it’s suitable, might rush the plan quicker too.
I like straightforward opinions. I will confess that you’re right. ^ ^ I admit that I really was surprised and admire how Haruno and Hayama can plan something like that and how they feel. The author is skillful when he wrote about smart and mysterious characters. He should consider to write mystery fiction. If you ask me, I don’t like Hayama much because I realized his hidden intention toward people and how he treats them behind the scene. But he made me surprise as much as he made me dislike him.
For Haruno, I know your feeling to not like her. Sometimes, her actions make me think she doesn’t consider people’s feeling when she hurt them to achieve her own purpose. But I hope you will read the last volume of Oregairu, if I don’t miscalculate, you will see the new Haruno after the storm.
