Even a little girl can transform! Tsurumi Rumi (鶴見 留美), an elementary school girl who Hikigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) and co. save her from bullying by her clique during Summer camp at Chiba village. However they don’t expect she transforms in front of them! For some people, it is changing. For me, it is “Transformation”.
Actually, this is Oregairu analysis focused on a certain girl, but I included how a certain character will transform too. For how Yukino will transform and the reasons why she will change, I wrote in after Rumi’s phrase. So you can find it so easily by Ctrl+F and keyword [New].
I strongly recommend you to read LN v4-12 before proceed.
- Please read Attention page first, to let you understand that my all analysis are not 100% right.

Begin with Rumi Rumi first.
To tell you the truth, I didn’t expect myself to write a post about her before. However, after I read LN v4 again & again, I found out that her actions and her thought are very interesting. You might wonder why I think like that?
Reasons why I Wrote About Rumi.
When I read LN v4 when Hachiman and co. are trying to solve Rumi’s problem. If you read this v4 or watch anime ss1 ep8, you would see she decides to save all girls and they run away from Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人) and co. during the test of courage in the forest.
I am interested to find out why she do something like this. Why does she save friends who always bully her? How is she feeling before and when she uses her digital camera?
Before I start to analyze about the transformation of Rumi, let me explain two events first.
- Event during after splashing water.
- Event during Hayato’s clique pressures Rumi’s clique.
1) Event during after splashing water.
After finish from splashing water, Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃) and Yuigahama Yui (由比ヶ浜 結衣) come to Hachiman and Rumi. She hears Yuigahama is concerned about her so she says she doesn’t want anyone thinks she is pathetic. However she says to all of them she gave up.
When Hachiman hears that and sees her crying, he decides to solve her problem so he tells her that he hopes she will be fun in the test of courage.
I notice that Rumi’s words make Hachiman is upset with the world (people) around her who forces her fall into the despair. But I think his anger comes from his own direct experience in the past that is not different from Rumi’s situation. That’s why he decides to change the situation for revenge the society as the first priority, but I didn’t say he doesn’t intend to help her, but what he do is to destroy bad people who make him recall his own bad memories.
This is the first time for Hachiman’s revenge. You can see him destroy the society/bad people again during the school cultural festival many times. I notice that he doesn’t feel well to do that, but his anger drives him to sacrifice himself and destroy bad people in return. If you want to read his thoughts and feelings that time, you can explore at Oregairu Analysis – “After” Yukinoshita Haruno Decides to Help Yukino. (The Last Part)
2) Event during Hayato’s Clique pressures Rumi’s Clique.
We see Hachiman, Yukino and Yui are observing Hayato and co. are talking with Rumi’s clique, right? We will sit near them too.
- Tobe Kakeru (戸部 翔) and Miura Yumiko (三浦 優美子) (friends in Hayato’s clique) start to threaten Rumi’s clique.
After that, Hayato orders Rumi and co. that half of them can run but another half will stay here. He lets them choose who will stay.
- All girls choose a certain girl you know who. Rumi is forced to stay. Hachiman feels depressed by the scenes in front of them. Hachiman discusses to 2YY that if all girls are true friends, their group would not be crushed. However, he doesn’t expect that in this group.
- Hayato forces all girls to choose two more. They vote a girl named Yuka to be next one. Yuka protects herself by charging Hitomi, Hitomi does the same to Mori, Mori charges both of them. 4th girl, Yokko, cries.
- Hayato sets time limit to hurry them up. They decide Yuka and force her to stay. Hachiman and Yui think the same that it’s no choice. He thinks no one can’t overturn everyone’s vote even if it is against your feelings. So he despises it.
- Countdown remains 10 seconds. Rumi closes her eyes, she holds her digital camera tightly as if it’s a protective charm. As if she is praying.
- Rumi uses her camera to make Hayato and co. blind and let all girls escapes together. Hachiman and others are surprised.
- Yuigahama thinks they really are good friends but her optimistic opinion is rejected by Hachiman because those girls look down on Rumi. He thinks she would be genuine because she intends to save people who looked down on her. However he’s not sure yet and gives Natsume Souseki’s quote. He can’t tell if someone is genuine or not, it likes “In a Grove” by Akutagawa Ryuunosuke. Yukino starts to sigh, Yui is confused. So he decides to read up on Souseki properly.
The rise of Tsurumi Rumi
This section I will analyze the transformation of Rumi by picking 2 events above.
Before her rising
Rumi thinks she can’t do anything and gives up. Before the test of courage starts, her condition is more worse, and Hachiman realizes that she gives up already, to herself and people around her. She doesn’t know what to do and no one tells her what to do. It’s like she’s lost by ill-willed people.
I notice when Yui is concerned about Rumi, she feels like she is pathetic and doesn’t want anyone thinks she is. It’s normal when we is in bad condition (eg. sick/fail/bankrupt/etc.) and if good or kind people know about this, they will be concerning or feel sorry for her. However, when other people feel like that to Rumi, she would feel more depressed, because she interprets that they feel pity for her.
And the last thing is, I think she can be perceptive. (like Hachiman and Yukino) I notice she thinks and wonders many things almost time, especially about herself her surroundings.
However, with this perceptive and pride, she will use them to transform and find her own path later.
Transformation mode activate!
The awareness of Rumi happens when Hayato and co. are threatening her clique and she watches the result. In LN v4, Hachiman picks Natsume Souseki’s quote to explain during explaining his plan. I think Watari-sensei intends to use Souseki’s quote to focus on Rumi too.
We know that Rumi gave up about her problem already but when she goes to the forest with her clique, if I think she is smart girl and if she still remembers what he tells her, she would be aware that Hachiman (who said the test of courage will be fun to her) might be the one who plans about this.
It explains why kind high schoolers like Hayato and co. treat them so violently. Another thing is, when Tobe and Yumiko are threatening them, they miss Rumi for some reason.
After Rumi is sacrificed, she sees all girls blame each other. They end up crying for this nightmare. She would notice that Hachiman and co. are helping her from this bullying by pressuring her friends. However, I am sure Rumi doesn’t like this. I notice when she closes her eyes and be quiet.
Maybe she realizes all of these happens because of her. The sudden change of kind high schoolers, her clique is the last group that enters the forest, the despair of all girls, all of these happens because she gives up, because she is pathetic.
Hachiman and others try to solve her problem by themselves because she tells them she doesn’t want them to see her as a pathetic one but her tears betray her back then. She knows they are concerning to her but her pride can’t accept they feeling like that.
Another reason Rumi changes because she hears one of girls speak her idea to tell their teacher. If all girls do that, Hachiman and others will get big trouble! And if that happens, it will be her fault as well. She will never forgive herself to let
Finally, With pride and perceptive, Rumi suddenly changes!! As Natsume Souseki’s quote Hachiman said eariler:
Under normal conditions, everybody is more or less good, or, at least, ordinary. But tempt them, and they may suddenly change.
With the pressure in her own thought, she transforms like she is new Rumi. Before, she accepted her own fate and gave up. But right now, she decides to act like the hero who saves her friend by using her camera.
It’s not easy to do something you never do but she can. However, I don’t think she wants to be hero or something, or she cares for her friends like Yuigahama thinks (they are good kids). Yuigahama interprets Rumi’s actions only, so she understands that she wants to save her friends. Her thought is the same as most people like doing, judge Rumi by her actions. Maybe she is right, but I consider the truths that Rumi is aware many things before gather courage to change the situation…
- [Hachiman’s intention]
- [why high schoolers threaten her friends]
- [her own weakness]
- the bad end in the future [what will happen if her friends complain about this to their teachers].
Reasons why Rumi saves all girls
- I think she pulls them and runs away together so Hayato and co. can stop acting like delinquents to solve her problem. With her pride, she wants to show them she will not be weak forever. She decides to be stronger so they will not force themselves to save her anymore.
- If other girls decide to complain about this to teacher, Hachiman and co. who try to help her would get big trouble. To prevent that, she saves her bad friends.
And that’s the analysis about the rise of a little girl who is aware good will of others and improves herself so she will not let them get more trouble and realizes that she can overcome her own despair. I know Hachiman and co. don’t expect that Rumi will change but the reality they save her is true.

Rumi’s transformation should end at this point, but after LN v12 descended from heaven, I notice something that is relate to how Yukino CAN solve her problems.
How to make Yukino can solve her problems. [New]
Her condition Prevents her from solving her own Problems.
After LN v11, now Yukino realizes that she can’t rely on Hachiman to deal with her problem (her mother) because he is the one who announces (with Yuigahama’s help) that Yukino should solve her own problem. And as info from v11-12, she tells her club mates they still have his request and she will solve her problem.
However, I think he who noticed how she bent the truth (from LN v5-6), and how he re-understood about her (after he knew that she lied to him about car accident), I assume that in LN v12, he would realize at the beginning already that she wouldn’t solve her own problem, but since she said she will deal with it, that’s why he decides to respect her decision, even if he can’t trust her due to her own history that was shown to him in LN v6, that most readers like us would not think pessimistic because we are not Hachiman.
However, he is another one who experienced and witnessed her actions directly (Haruno also experienced and witnessed how her younger sister over depended on her in what she couldn’t help, and witnessed how her little sister bend the truth to hide her true intention during chocolate making event in anime ss2 ep12).
With these reasons, he can’t trust her so easily although she stands firm surely and expresses by “talking with her sister and moving to her house to convince her mother” and even “working alone so because she doesn’t want to rely on him”. However, despite with all of these
positive signs, Hachiman is the only one (or I will include Haruno too because she observes words and expressions of her little sister while Hachiman and Yui are there too) in LN v12 who realizes that all of these are how to bend the truth that reflects her true condition. That’s why although he doesn’t know how to do since this is her own private issue and he is not the type who will do something like that, he can’t let this continue, so he pursues her.
However, I have no any intention to badmouth about Yukino after all since I learned many important things in anime ss1-2 and she is another interesting character in Oregairu. This Yahari is not normal literature and romcom, but masterpiece. She is one of top three characters who is very extremely difficult to understand. Hachiman should be the one too, but since we read his monologue and his actions, the level is lower, compares to these three characters who are the owner of three memorandums in LN v10 that is like opening the red curtain of the last episode, before the finale.
The cause of this case is not because she doesn’t know how to solve it (because she is the one who tells her club mates how to solve it), but it’s because her own fear. The fear that lies in every humans, the fear that occurs for a long time since she was a kid. I don’t think she can confront her mother, at least by herself alone. Because her fear doesn’t allow her to do it. Because despite Hachiman tried to convince her it’s fine to tell a lie, she responds back by bending the truth in front of him. Because Hachiman and Haruno who understand her very well, can’t trust her although both of them want to believe her.
Is Proving Really Important?
And when Yukino tells her club mates that she will prove that it’s not dependency, I think it’s …weird to me. Why does she need to do that?
But when she tells them and assists the prom alone, I don’t understand that working alone will prove this is not dependency, because she doesn’t ask Hachiman to help? But working together in big event is reasonable. So I am curious Yukino’s intention. No matter it’s dependency or love, I don’t understand there is how to prove it via action.
I suspect her intention more than usual when Hiratsuka Shizuka (平塚 静) tells Yuigahama and tells Hachiman later that the prom was cancelled by Yukino’s mother. Also Yukino doesn’t tell this news to her club mates (at first, I thought she would be ashamed because she couldn’t stop her mother, so she can’t tell them). And when she insists that she doesn’t need Hachiman’s help or else how can she prove it’s not dependency? Her actions in LN v12 tells me that she “has no any intention” to deal with her own problems (and I don’t mean about dependency only but her own problem relate to her family too). Hachiman who notices this, tries to meet her but he doesn’t know what to do either.
Most Humans don’t understand their own minds completely.
To this point, if I need to conclude, what Hachiman lacks is how to support/help and the will to invade personal problems of others. And what Yukino lacks is the self awareness.
The self awareness is topic that I wrote already in few posts
- Oregairu Analysis – Why does Yukinoshita Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃) “Stay Angry” at Hikigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡)? (After The School Trip). Because at that time, I explained why Yukino doesn’t stop to bend the truth, that it’s possible that she is not aware that it is not fine to do it or to continue. When I read the first memorandum, I suspect that the owner of this memorandum is aware that what s/he did is not right after all because I can see that the owner “bends” the truth with beautiful words, but she is aware at the same time that she did that to cover/hide, to deny her weakness/mistakes, such as why she couldn’t read a certain book. So it means that s/he is aware what s/he did already, but “something”, something in her/his mind doesn’t allow her to stop, and that is the fear.
Another thing I wrote in the post above is, she feels as if she is betrayed by Hachiman because he is not like she believes. What she believes is his image that both of them establish in her head. When he did something that is not consistent with his own belief/image, she can’t accept this. And another result is, she keeps angry at him because she thinks it’s his fault 100%. From the their conversation after the festival and the confession during the school trip, makes me assume that she believes in “fixed image” of her idol, and she is not aware that she is the one who gets into the construction that image in her head. And all of these bring to the last conclusion that she is looking for someone who she can depend on (but I don’t think she realizes that she is doing that because she is caught with indirectly words by Yuigahama’s declaration and Hachiman’s dissuasion as WW’s style in ep13 of anime Yahari Zoku season 2, LN v11).
- Oregairu Analysis – The Conclusion of Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃)’s Plan (Operation Fire Doughnut) & The TRUTH(s) behind Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人)’s Sacrifice for Hikigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) (The Last Part). The third topic is she is not aware, is feeling of the one who is close to her, and her misunderstanding toward her sister, Haruno. Because of many factors (comparing by their surrounding and by themselves, high expectations from people around them, etc) that made Yukino always compare herself and her sister too much, loses her own self because people always compare and expect her with her sister, feels her own trauma only and misunderstands about her sister (she thinks Haruno would not hurt like her because she is perfect and important) but doesn’t consider that another one also suffers because of high pressured environment because of those perfectness and importance. (Read more in link above)
Oregairu Analysis – Arranged Marriage might Happen for real!? And this is why she can’t notice her family and Hayama’s family will reach the everlasting relationship (Read more at this link), and Haruno can’t tell her directly because she is the perfect sister everyone wish, because she can’t say her suffering directly. Since Yukino doesn’t feel that she is not part of them, she can’t notice the atmosphere that changes and the voiceless shout of Haruno. (Read more in this post, Oregairu Analysis – Why Is Yukinoshita Haruno (雪ノ下 陽乃) So Upset Yukino (雪ノ下 雪乃) When She Asks Her About Career Path of Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人)?)
Another anime that I watched can make me understand about human’s mind, Fate/Apocrypha (フェイト/アポクリファ). There are characters understand their true wishes, that the one who understands and expresses the hidden feeling the most is Mordred. What I will pick as the reference from Fate/Apocrypha is, I think how Mordred can understand her own desire, is not different from how Yukino will be aware many important things that she loses and is misunderstanding about herself and her family. I mean, Mordred can understand Arthur because she is supported by many factors. So with the structure of character like Yukino and how the author prepared everything before LN v13-14, we can predict that in the future, she will be also “activated” by factors like these as well.
Characters who will support her to confront her hardship, would be Hachiman and Yuigahama. But I don’t think their words are enough to push her because both of them tried already (in LN v11-12), but she still insists to choose the easier path. So in order to reach the goal (Yukino changes like Rumi), the author prepared “Yukino will repay Haruno” and prepares “the arrange marriage (Haruno & Hayama)” to be powerful triggers (include support from her friends), I think she can change.
But with all of these factors are not enough, we would forget how Hachiman showed how he destroyed “bad people” with his sacrifice. I think normal causerie to change Yukino with only words, is not enough. I forebode in advance that he will “do something” during that arrange marriage as his own style but he will not solve Yukino’s problem by himself like he always did for other cases anymore. His actions and intention will be one of important factors to “urge” Yukino, like when Rumi transformed because she gained courage to stop the situation so she will not let Hachiman and co. get more trouble because of her.
I think Yukino’s case in the future (LN v14) is not different, to prevent Hachiman (& others who wish well for her) to carry responsibility by himself (or by themselves (although I am not sure Yuigahama will also sacrifice herself to help her friend, or just encourage Yukino only)), Yukino will gain courage…
- to overcome her own and other Yukinoshitas’s difficulties.
- to respond good wills of her friends.
- to prevent unnecessary damage that will happen to others (I think that would be Hachiman, Yuigahama and Hiratsuka-sensei).
Of course, I might be wrong and arranged marriage might not happen either, but I am sure that Yukino will repay Haruno for sure, or else I don’t get why WW create the event, “Haruno can ask Yukino anything” during the cultural festival. And I don’t get why he wrote about the everlasting relationship and Haruno and Hayama “changed” for some reasons. I can feel that WW will write something that I can call “miracle” that I think it’s more important than the ending. To connect everything he prepared together, they will create something that Yahari fans wonder a certain metaphor that is well-known in the story.
what is “genuine”?
After Yukinoshita sisters can understand each other and Haruno can ask her for help, her sister will change her attitude and “transform”, that is helping her older sister who can’t save herself from her family’s desire. I don’t know which one will happen first or later, but I think all factors are important things that will help Yukino recovers her self confidence and understands about herself, her sister and their family better. That’s why I wrote that Yukino’s story is worth to learn like other characters in the story.
That’s why I started to think that WW designed Rumi and Yukino are so similar (both outer appearances and how their feeling are similar). I don’t think this is coincidence at all. Their outer appearances are not the only thing that are similar, but their lives that full of shame, the moment when both of them understand about themselves and good wills of other people who intend to help them too.
The Importance of other characters to make Yukino transform.
It’s up to how we focus to which topic, and now I am focusing at how Yukino will transform, so it means I need to see her as the center point, and other characters are important people who will reach the difficult path like genuine together with her.
If Hachiman needs to play a role to confront Yukino’s mother, like I assumed, like when Hayama’s clique confronts Rumi’s clique, he wouldn’t be the bad delinquents who did that because he used to criticisms, but a true friend who will get punishment from her mother to urge Yukino to confront her own problems. If you imagine when Hachiman confronts Yukino’s mother, you would know how this mother can do if anyone is in her way (looks back when Hiratsuka-sensei is going to be transformed to other school). If he is the next one, I am not sure what her mother will do to impact his life, but it’s not good news for sure.
Since LN v12, Yuigahama is still sad and separates from Hachiman and Yukino, so I think the one who will help Yukino advance to face her own problem, should be her too, as her close friend. But I think she needs time or something, so she can convince herself to help her friend. I am not sure again that Yuigahama will sacrifice herself to confront Yukino’s mother or not, but I think she will be involved in this case, as the another one who listens to “genuine” but is still afraid to be alone, to lose relationship with others if she asks Yukino’s feeling toward her crush.
But please don’t forget Haruno too. In LN v12 again, after she listened to Yukino’s decision to talk with their mother, she says she will do the same. So I think that she will witness when Hachiman (and Yuigahama) make Yukino advance for sure. At first, I were not sure that his and Yukino effort will help Haruno confront her mother too or not, but it would be more meaningful if Yukinoshita sisters can help each other to convince their mother, because I think how her mother control people, is twist, but I believe that she has her own story that made her become Mrs.Yukinoshita this day too. So I hope Yukinoshita sisters will “help” her mother from her own endless circle as well. What do you think?
Come to think of it, I remember when Haruno answers her sister that if Yukino will talk with their mother, she will say what’s on her mind too. So I think my expectation is not out of reach, is it?
Although I need to look at Yukino as the center point to see how she can transform, I also think that other characters are significant, each one is not less than Yukino because if she is not supported by even one of them, I don’t think she can solve her own problems and recover her own self, since…
- Hachiman’s suggesting alone didn’t work. (LN v6)
- The secret plan of Haruno to help her little sister alone also didn’t work. (LN v6-7)
- Words of him and Yuigahama (double combo) didn’t work. (LN v11-12)
And characters at the other side are also significant. I don’t know how people above can support Yukino, if characters at another side don’t move. Since LN v10, I see these characters started to move their own desires.
If you read all of my analysis about him, you will know how things are running as he expects. And I wrote how the arranged marriage between him and Haruno will be the important event for Haruno and Yukino, so I will not repeat it again. I suspect that he is sure that no one can stop Yukinoshita’s parents to arrange marriage, not even Haruno, Yukino and even Hachiman. So I don’t think that he would not expect “Haruno’s asking for help” and “Yukino’s response to Haruno’s wish” will ruin his ultimate plan (to seize his crush seamlessly) in the end.
To tell you the truth, this would be oot. But I ever thought that Haruno who hates him until this day, might forgive him for what he did in the end. But after I analyzed the second memorandum, I think he will meet another ending instead. I think he will be ignored by her in the end since she realizes his true nature since a certain incident (LN v8). Maybe she will forgive him, but I don’t think she can like him as before anymore.
[to be continue]
Maybe the meaning of the metaphor, genuine, are confronting hardship despite they are still afraid, despite they are not feel like they are ready, so they can understand each other.
