I watched Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru (やはり俺の青春ラブコメはまちがっている。). ss1 ep 8 and read the same question about who is “Y” (the one who Hayama likes and mentions in LN v4) in some forums. To tell you the truth, I wanted to know who is “Y” too so I read many comments from those forums.

Before I will start…
28/5/2019 – Added Judo match to the short timeline because this event occurred before the summer camp. And Hayato showed his grudge against Hachiman for the first time during this event, in LN v7.5.
I know you want to find the answer asap. But let me recommend you to look back at the incident before the summer camp will happen. If you already read LN v2. The relationship between Hayato and Hachiman was still good ↑. Hachiman could solve his problem about ch@in m@il that makes the bad atmosphere in his class.
But after the certain incident (new character appeared) in LN v3 ended, Hayato’s conduct toward Hachiman changes completely for some reason ↓↓↓↓↓. Although Hayato doesn’t show his feeling clearly, something is leaked from his body. I will explain later about the signals he releases toward Hachiman.
But before you will proceed, if you don’t know why the appearance of this new character has some connection with the phenomenon of Hayato (sunshine → cloudy), I recommend you to read regard Analysis – When Yukinoshita Haruno Also Gazes into Hachiman..
Candidates For “Y”

OK, each one has “Y” in their names so how can we find the real “Y”? Of course, from LN v4 and 8. V4 has so many detail and super nano hints that Watari-sensei provides to us, readers. I suspect he tried to tell us who is “Y” in this vol quietly but surely. And for LN v8, Hayato started to has weird expressions.
How to find “Y” is reading LN carefully.
After I suspect interesting expressions of Hayato in v8, I know I need to find any clues to confirm “Y” in my mind is the right one or not. Finally, I found the answer who is “Y” in v4 and I explore by reading again and again to confirm. However, I advise you should not skip LN v3 because Watari-sensei prepared card by presenting this person before providing super nano hints in next vol.
Start to suspect Hayato’s interesting expressions and that person.
In LN v8, Haruno calls Hayato to come to donut shop but no more detail to say. After he came to the donut shop, He saw she is with Hikigaya Hachiman (比企谷 八幡) and unknown 2 girls. Haruno presents 2 girls to him and said they want to meet him. Hayato has no choice but chats with them. ( Wow, Hachiman mentioned that Hayato would stop by right after his club activities. Can you imagine he came instantly even Haruno didn’t tell him what business she needs him? = Haruno has influence over him. Just one short call and he came instantly.)
After 2 girls went out from the shop, he glared at Haruno and questioned why she did this. However, Haruno opened smile barrier to reflex his anger away. He can’t do anything but accept this destiny that he was forced to have some fun with 2 girls. This fact made him feel despair. (Hachiman mentioned again that for some reason, Hayato made the gloomy expression.
Why do I write Hayato feel despair?
While I finish writing this analysis, I don’t write anything happens in the doughnut cafe in Oregairu LN v8 (Zoku anime ep3) yet, so I try to explain about that period partially in this post too. But after I wrote about analysis focused on Hayato when he got a call from Haruno, I will delete some information here because I explained what I found about him in “The truth(s) behind Hayato’s sacrifice for Hachiman (part 1)”. Over there, you will find his feelings (include his despair) and thoughts when he is in the doughnut cafe in full edition.
Talk about Hayato’s despair, it’s because everything is not like he expects. Whatever he finds out in doughnut cafe makes his hope turns to opposite emotion. Haruno calls him for the certain purposes and she needs him to do. In case you want to know what I mean and what she wishes him to do, you can read in Haruno’s operation fire doughnut (part 3). Over there, even doughnut is melting, let alone Hayato’s condition.

OK. And with all these interesting expressions of Hayato, I start to find any more clues to confirm that Haruno is “Y” or not in LN v4. But before that, Watari-sensei arranges plot for us already so I will talk about LN v3 a little bit.

In LN v3, Watari-sensei presents older sister of Yukino, Yukinoshita Haruno. She meets with Yukino and Hachiman in the shopping mall. So I want you to remember that this event happens before summer camp period.

OK, I will start to collect and analyze Hayama Hayato’s data in v4.
Finally, “Y” in Hayato’s heart was revealed
In LN v4, I focus on Hayato again. I collect all behaviors/expressions of the being called Hayama Hayato (葉山 隼人) that let me reach to the answer and look for the meaning of behaviors/expressions of him. (What am I, stalker?)
Data#1
When Hachiman and his friends are retrieving their baggage from the car as they come to the Chiba village, he sees a minivan arrives and he finds out that one of the people in that minivan is Hayato. He greets Hachiman by calling him “Hikitani-kun“. (Why do I think word “Hikitani-kun” is fishy? In LN v1-2, I don’t think Hayato called him that name is fishy but in v4, it is. I will explain why it is later.)
Data#2
During prepare to make curry, Hachiman is preparing the fire and sees Hayato is looking at him. When Hachiman asks him “What?”, He answers “nothing”. So Hachiman glares at him but Hayato still says the same answer. However, he gives up because Hachiman glares at him every 5 seconds. So he starts to say
“Hikitani-kun, about Yu“
but he is interrupted by Totsuka. After that, Hachiman asks him to continue but Hayato says he will tell him later. (I wrote that Hayato starts to say but in my opinion, he wants to ask something from Hachiman about how he and someone who has the name with “Yu” met. Too bad because Hayato never continues about this again.)

After they prepared to sleep in a bungalow, Tobe Kakeru (戸部 翔) wants to talk about which girl he and other people like but Hayato doesn’t want to talk about this. However his refusal can’t stop Tobe to continue, he comments that Ebina Hina (海老名 姫菜) is cute and asks Hayato’s. Hayato still refuses to say even if Tobe importunes him, so Tobe has no choice but asks him just the initial. Hayato gives up and says “Y“. After Tobe hears this, he still searches for the answer in his head about who is “Y”. But Hayato is upset, so he has no choice but sleep. (I can tell this is the sensitive topic for Hayato because, from his reaction, he doesn’t want to talk about this to anyone, not to his friends. However, you still want to know the full answer, right?)

In the meeting, everyone is consulting how to solve Tsurumi Rumi (鶴見 留美)‘s problem. When Hachiman explains about the most frightening people and many things. After that, Hayama glares at him directly but starts to understand a little why that woman looks out for Hachiman. He decides to go with Hachiman’s plan. (You might not know but Hayato is so mad at Hachiman. He agrees to follow Hachiman’s plan but he never accepts Hachiman’s belief.)

In the same period as Data#4, Hayato’s words about “that woman looks out for Hachiman.”, gives me another hint.
Data#6
After Rumi’s case ended, Hayato talks with Hachiman. Hayato still calls him “Hikitani-kun”, but in the end, he announces he would not get along with him, Hikigaya-kun. (So he knows collect name of Hachiman and still calls him Hikitani-kun?)
It’s time to analyze Hayato’s data.
With Haruno has influence with Hayato so much and his expressions when he is with Haruno in the donut shop in LN v8. I will analysis with a hypothesis that “Y” is Yukinoshita Haruno.
As I wrote before that Watari presents the new character, Haruno in LN v3 before summer camp period. So if I suspect Haruno is “Y”. Because I anticipate that Hayato and Haruno would meet somewhere after Haruno met Hachiman and Yukino in the shopping mall and before judo match and summer camp will happen.

You might wonder why I include Judo match to this timeline. Well, Hayato’s grudge against Hachiman is shown for the first time in the story during this event, in this v7.5. If you already read this, you will notice he tries to convince Hachiman to join the same group with him for the match. If you believe in my theory that Haruno told him about Hachiman and showed how this boy interested her that established the flame of jealous in Hayato’s heart, you will see how he wants Hachiman to feel depressed because of many factors. To be in the same Judo group with him (Hayato) means [his magnificent fight] and [how many people cheer for him] will depress his target, Hachiman who is not like him, not popular, not good looking, not charming, not …, and etc.
Oregairu Analysis – The TRUTH(s) behind Hayato’s Sacrifice for Hachiman (Part 3)
Actually, Hayato uses this smooth bullying people technique again in v8, during the double deat- umm date. By using the surrounding around him or Orimoto Kaori (折本 かおり) and her friend, Nakasomething to “tease” his rival while they are on a date. Bullying at that time can be done by letting those girls compare the charming guy and not charming guy so they will criticize Hachiman by themselves. The situation at that time is so clear more than this judo match because of the mental damage Hachiman receives during the date, is shown clearly and many times. If you are not sure if Hayato is the mastermind or don’t know why he do something like that, you can read this post so you will know even his true intention.
Holding the second position for Judo match is the best place for him to make Hachiman taste the inferior complex since Hachiman is the third. Since Zaimokusa chose to be the first so his rival has no choice but to be the last.
This match in v7.5 is confirmed by Hachiman (somewhere in v8) that this event occurred before the summer camp. That’s why I include this event to the short timeline above.
Of course, Zaimokusa will experience this too if he is in the same group and Hayato is the one who suggested Hachiman to invite this friend too. I suspect that Hayato is not interested how Zaimokusa will feel. As long as he can make his love rival suffer because of this comparison, he is fine with that. In manga @Comic v7, you can see clearly how he acts as if… he is not like this at the previous time (when he was still real nice to Hachiman). Well, I really hope Hayato doesn’t go too far to the point he chooses Zaimokusa because he judges him as people in the same level as Hachiman. You know what I mean.
With this, I will explain Hayato’s behaviors/expressions during summer camp.
Decode Data#1
When Hayato greets Hachiman, He calls his name “Hikitani-kun“. Many readers/watches think he still calls Hachiman’s name wrong but unintentionally. However after they solved Rumi’s problem, it appears that Hayato calls his name “Hikigaya-kun” correctly. With this, it means Hayato intends to call “Hikitani-kun” even if that’s not Hachiman’s name.
So I suspect that Hayato would know her feeling toward that guy or their meeting via some channel. For example, he met Haruno before, and she mentioned about a dead fish eyed boy who is in the same school as him and Yukino named Hikigaya-kun. If she talks about him. I have no clue until this day about how he knows her feeling but he would know about her very well to the point he realizes her interest for that Hikitani-kun, that makes him feels jealous.
The example I wrote above is just a view only, I have no clue how he knows his big sis’s timeline or a certain romcom god made him know this info. But if we take νn Zoku as some reliable reference that I suspect that the same god also controls the story, in her route, Hayato knows that his sister met this guy during the New Year. Scary, how can he know her personal activities? To sum it up, he knows her activities in that νn and he would know they ever met in Oregairu story or else he would not suspect why this guy interest her that makes him almost ask Hachiman about Yu- when they are alone.
So my example Haruno might tell him about Hikigaya-kun, is just my random thought. And I think this idea because when I was writing this post, I didn’t see him as the abnormal person but the boy who has the feelings for that beautiful Nee-san so I assumed some normal opinion. But when I know his following Haruno’s news like that in νn and I found out about his strange thoughts during various events in Oregairu story, I began to suspect that there are other ways to make him know this. I’m looking forward for that author to reveal how Hayato knows this.
In LN v8, Hayato tells Hachiman that Haruno seems to be fond of him, so my assumption and this clue are consistent. If your crush starts talking about another guy happily in front of you, how will you feel?
[In case you want to know what so important about Haruno meets Hachiman for the first time in LN v3, you can read in analysis “When Yukinoshita Haruno Also Gazes into Hachiman.” (Link is above ⇑) I explained how she thinks he is interesting.]
After Hayato talked to Haruno, he meets Hachiman again during summer camp. The first feeling he would feel is upset. He knows Hachiman’s name because of Haruno, but his own personality doesn’t allow him to show negative feelings, so he changes Hachiman’s name as he likes to hurt the one he hates, but he also needs to make people think he just calls his name wrongly to hide his intention. That’s why he calls Hachiman as “Hikitani-kun”.
[In case again you are curious about why Hayato chooses to hurt Hachiman by calling him “Hikitani” instead of his collect name. This is …one of million normal ways to bully someone. I don’t know if you experienced when your naughty friend tried to call you with a name that bent from your own collect name. When they called you that so they can bully, laugh or tease you, their actions hurt you. They were so happy because they thought they could do that, but you are not happy.
This is how Hayato uses to hurt Hachiman without no one notice his ill intention. But I am talking about this Hayama Hayato. He creates “nice guy” persona, so he can’t act like he is the bad guy. If he acts like the bad friend I mentioned earlier, people around him include Hachiman would know his malice, and that is Hayato’s fear. He can’t let people realize his feeling, let alone his ill will. He can’t destroy his persona he tries so much to create it just wants to hurt love rival who catches that person’s interest. So that’s why he chooses to use the method that can send invincible malice to Hachiman and people can’t notice his intention. It’s Kanji’s fault that makes him call Hachiman like that. I think Hayato is intending to keep this continuously by letting himself and his friends always use this wrong name, so although Hachiman would not realize Hayato’s malice and thinks this can’t help, calling the wrong name can depress him because everyone in the class can call their collect names while no one calls his name collectly (except Hiratsuka-sensei). However, it seems Hachiman doesn’t attend this.
And please don’t forget again I’m writing about “Y”.
Decode Data#2
During prepare to make curry, Hayato stares at Hachiman (chiii~). He wants to understand why Haruno is very interested in him so much until he almost asks him about “Yu–“. I am not sure what Hayato wants to ask him but if I need to guess, Hayato wants to get some information from Hachiman about a woman named “Yukinoshita Haruno”. I think “Yu” is the initial of her surname because when you are going to mention about someone who you never mention about this person before, you would use his/her full name.
And when Hayato says “Yu” like this, it means Zaimokuza and Yamato can’t be the “Y” automatically. …We lost two bananas in one go. Ebina’s dream can’t come true.
I might count Zaimokuza and Yamato out too fast. But I can say by referring the timeline above if Hayato has feelings for Haruno for real as I assumed, he is not different from other boys, the confusion and dissatisfaction would occur in his head. These emotions are factors that reflexes his actions like the mirror.
- Confusion – that makes him worried so much, to the point he almost asks Hachiman to know more information how he and that person met each other.
- Dissatisfaction – bullies Hachiman secretly by bending his name for his own self-satisfaction.
I think these two scenes [Hayato calls Hachiman’s name as Hikitani] and [when he almost asks Hachiman about “Yu”] have some connection because they can explain how Hayato thinks about Hachiman and that person.
And it means the remained candidates are 4 girls (Yukino, Haruno, Yuigahama, and Yumiko).
Decode Data#3
Tobe asks Hayato who he likes but he refuses. However Tobe importunes him, Hayato doesn’t want to talk about that but he is the nice guy who never says no to anyone, or should I say “can’t say no”. He knows he needs to give Tobe the answer or else Tobe will be mad at him.
So Tobe wants him to say the initial only. If my hypothesis is collect, Hayato needs to say “H” (Haruno) but he can’t say that so he chooses “Y” (Yukinoshita – Haruno’s surname) instead for many reasons.
The reasons why Hayato uses “Y” instead of “H”.
- If he says “Y”, he still tells the truth but can hide the truth at the same time. I can feel that he doesn’t want to tell a lie to Tobe, but he doesn’t want to tell the truth either. So he uses her surname because it is regarded as the name too.
- With “Y”, he can hide her name “H” by using other girls who have the initial “Y” in their names. I mean if he uses “Y”, Tobe will start to find who is “Y” in his clique first. He will know there are two girls who match with Hayato’s answer. I think Hayato wants to cover the truth more than shares his secret. Since Tobe seems is curious and might be going to ask Hayato more about “Y” but Hayato doesn’t want talk about this anymore, so he tells him to sleep.
- I wrote earlier that Tobe might find any girls who have the name with “H”, but when I think carefully, there’s one. Ebina Hina. If he thinks this might be her, how can you imagine what will happen next to Hayato? Tobe would not believe Hayama likes her, but the curiosity and worry can overcome anything. He would try to find out by asking him to reveal who really is this “H”. Hayama is the nice guy who can’t refuse the expectation of his friend or else he will lose a friend (Tobe). Tobe would never accept if Hayama will lie to him or doesn’t reveal the name of his crush either. So Hayato might have no choice but say the full name of that person in the end. And this will be the bad end. So no matter Tobe will think this “H” will be Ebina or not, “H” is forbidden.
- Hayato will get more trouble if his answer is “H”. It’s possible that Tobe can’t find any girls who have initial “H” so you can imagine he will be super duper curious and want to know the full name. Hayato knows well that Tobe has a big mouth. Tobe might slip about this within his clique and one of his friends will hurt (Yumiko). It is possible his clique will be shattered because Yumiko might go out from this group (if Yumiko does that, Ebina and Yui will have no choice but stay with her too). That’s why Hayato can’t say “H”, so “Y” is the best/safest choice. Anyway, in the story, he never reveals who he has feelings for, not even his friends. Maybe he knows Yumiko’s feeling toward him. Maybe he wants to hide this secret from himself only. Maybe all of them.
- When Tobe asks him, there’s not only him but Hachiman and Totsuka are there too. Hayato feels extremely awkward.
- Don’t forget that Hayato knows that Hachiman is listening to his answer. I mentioned earlier that Hayato feels confused, unsatisfied and even jealous toward Hachiman, after Haruno is very interested in Hachiman so that’s why in Hayato’s mind, Hachiman is his love rival automatically. So he will never tell the answer to Hachiman. Why does he need to reveal the secret (that he never says to anyone, not to his friends) in front of love rival who gets attention from his crush?
With these reasons, that’s why Hayato says “Y”.

Hachiman Quotes (Short version)
The most frightening people are the one closes to you. You would never think he/she would stab you in the back. That person could be your best friend.
People will show their true colors in extremely bad situations. When they’re so scared, they’ll do anything to protect themselves from danger. They can’t think about other people. They’ll even sacrifice one of their own to save themselves. No way you can get along with someone once their ugly side is revealed.
After Hachiman finishes his quotes, he wouldn’t know his speeches is making a fire tornado near him. Do you remember Hayato is very depressed by his past (when he and Yukino were in the same elementary school). I will bet Hayato encounters a situation in the past that he has no choice but do nothing and ends up hurting Yukino. However, his nightmare is still haunting him whenever he reminds it.
Update 29 Sep 2017
After that, I don’t know Yukino tells about her bulling to her family or not (I bet she won’t, because she has her own pride and doesn’t want anyone see her as a pathetic one.(just like Rumi)) but her sister, the one who is very smart and still be together with her back then, but I don’t think Haruno isn’t aware the situation in the school. I don’t know again if Yukino tells Haruno or not, or if she asks her sister for help, but it’s impossible that she doesn’t know since she cares for her sister. So I think after she knows the situation, Hayato is the first person who can save Yukino since he attends the same school (due to a clue from Hayato when he imagines what will happen if Hachiman studies the same school as him).
In the end, I think Yukino would expect him to help her since he is like her childhood friend, the nice boy, the only ally, and he attends the same school as her. But what is the result of this event?
Or maybe the dependency of Yukino (expected him to help her from the bullying), the bullying in the school, Hayato doesn’t do anything and Haruno holds high expectation in him and hopes he can save her little sister and solve her dependency, happened at the same time?
And the ending of their story in the past is the shattering relationship.
A boy who Haruno thought as her younger brother and Yukino’s close friend, she liked him, played with him, teased him a lot, but when Yukino was in big trouble, he was so scared and didn’t save her, hmmm~ I will let you imagine if Haruno will transform to fire tornado or not. Haruno can’t trust Hayato anymore and yes, hates him from that day. OK, back to the present.
Rumi’s problem makes Hayato reminisces and suffers by his bitter past more than we can imagine. Besides his love rival starts to give him quotes that he doesn’t want to hear the most because all of that is him (leaves His friend in order to survive). This makes Hayato’s anger becomes fire tornado. (the evidence is he “glares” at Hachiman directly and comments that Hachiman has a nasty side to him (Hachiman thinks that Hayato looks at him with disgust)).
Actually, I thought his expression this time is kinda weird. Hayato doesn’t need to be angry to Hachiman or comments like that. (like Yui and Totsuka feel after listening to his speech.) But after I realize who is his “Y”, the situation changes, and his actions in LN convince me because it’s very reasonable.
However, his fire tornado starts to weaken as he understands why that woman looks out for Hachiman.
Right now, I can say confidently that [“Y”] and [the woman who looks out for Hachiman] is the same person = Hayato’s crush.
So with this conclusion, Hayato decides to follow Hachiman’s plan but his objective is to prove Hachiman’s ideal can’t save Rumi or his own ideal is right. Hayato still thinks his own belief can save her because he is using himself as the reference (he can be friend with everyone) and if Hachiman can’t solve Rumi’s problem, it means Hachiman’s wrong, he’s right!
I can say again this would be the first time Hayato begins to feel inferior to Hachiman because if you look at Hachiman via point of view of Hayato, it’s as if the guy in front of him stumbles on Hayato’s pride for the first time. This pain becomes the drive to compete with Hachiman via this operation. You can see his ideal is opposite from Hachiman’s belief like the fake light and the true darkness. So although he wants to save Rumi to heal his own pain in the past, it’s no wonder he wants to declare the war with Hachiman secretly. To prove he is better than Hachiman, to prove that what Hachiman says about human (aka Hayato himself) is wrong. But there is another reason why he wants to compete with Hachiman.
Anyone who read LN v4 already would remember the scene when he keeps watching at Hachiman while they are alone before he almost says something related to “Yu-“. I assume earlier about his confusion why “that person” is interested in this guy, to the point she tells him about their first meeting.
I am not sure that she tells him the place they met or which issues they shared via this first conversation or not. But I analyze from Hayato’s behavior that he doesn’t get why this guy is so interesting in her eyes although she hardly or even never mentions about other men before. So if my assumption is correct, it means she never tells him why Hachiman is so special to her even if she meets him just once. This question disturbs him until he meets this guy again, at the summer camp. And when he listens to the unique point of view of this guy. He interprets that she is interested in Hachiman because of his pessimistic (that is not true). I assume more from my previous assumption that Hayato is misunderstanding. Why do I think like this?
Because Hayato thinks that she is interested in Hachiman because his unique attitude (although in LN v3, she finds out Hachiman is very interesting because after she tests him few times, he can sense her hidden persona behind her cheerful mask, it’s not because Hachiman shows his pessimistic to her since they just met for the first time, he didn’t say much but observed her). In the conclusion, Hayato misinterprets the reason why she is interested in Hachiman. But this is not the end yet.
With the misunderstanding of Hayato himself and the dissatisfaction, because Hachiman crushes his pride when he explains about human just now, it’s understanding for him to decide to compete with Hachiman.
If he can prove that Hachiman’s belief is wrong,…
- he would feel better. His victory would heal the mental damage he takes from Hachiman.
- he can prove that Hachiman’s ideal is wrong.
- to prove this guy is not special more than him.
I know Hayato’s belief is different from Hachiman’s and even Ebina’s (from his idea to union Rumi and other girls to solve the bullying). But when he tells Hachiman about his own belief, it’s as if …he wants to crash the point of view of Hachiman with the different ideal that is like another side of the coin.
ps. all of this happens in Hayato’s head… the battle between 2 boys (HayaxHachi)!! And I am sorry that my assumptions are out of topic.

When Hayato says that he understands a little bit why “she/kanojo” is looking out for Hachiman, no wonder “she” he mentions, is the one he has deep feelings for. So his word this time gives me important hint to find out who is “Y”. it’s the only one who can fit in this hint. Let me explain why.
Please imagine when Hayato says “she”, I will ask you…
- that person who he mentions is the one who is in the same room in the pic below
- or that person is the one who is not near him right now.
Although this pic doesn’t show all Y girls, you would notice who is not in this room. I will let you imagine who are still in the room in the pic above, and who is not.
If you ask me, if “she” is in the same room and is near Hayato and Hachiman right now, if I am Hayato, I would not mention about her, but tries to keep quiet instead. It doesn’t make sense to mention “she” when that person is near him, won’t it?
And in case that woman is not in the same room as Hayato when he mentions about her, it would make sense or not?
Hide & Seek, who-is-she?
So this hint is so thin and can’t see it so easily, but its sharp can slash between the only one from other candidates. Also, this can exclude Yamato and Zaimokusa because they are not girls.
Decode Data#6
After everyone solved Rumi’s problem. Hayato can’t sleep so he talks with Hachiman. In Hayato’s mind, he finally accepts his defeat. Hachiman’s plan saves Rumi so his belief is right. However, if Hayato accepts his defeat, he must accept another reality that it’s understandable why that person looks out for Hachiman. Because Hachiman understands the nature of people more than him.
If he thinks like this, it’s not surprising if he wants to imagine a different situation, right? He wonders what happen if he and Hachiman attend the same elementary school. Hachiman answers with confidence already but do you know what’s in Hayato’s mind?
If Hachiman is there, he would save Yukino (like Rumi’s case), the disaster in the school would be stopped by Hachiman. He (Hayato) would be close with Yukinoshita sisters. I notice he is imagining the different situation to ease his own mind, to escape from the cruel reality that can’t change it anymore. As if it is more convenient if Hachiman just is there and solve everything for him. And I notice that Hayama always uses Hachiman to solve difficult his problems (Tobe’s confession, double date) so he can continue to live in the peaceful place.
Although he is accepting the result of the battle between two beliefs, it doesn’t mean his hatred toward his love rival will die out (it’s apples and oranges). Because the fact that that woman locks Hachiman as her target still continues. That’s why he tells to Hachiman that…
“that even so, I would not get along with you, Hikigaya-kun“.
And this is the first time Hayato declares to Hachiman as his real love rival by calling Hachiman’s name collectly. Too bad Hachiman doesn’t know about Hayato’s thoughts & emotions right now (and I doubt when he will know the truth).
The Conclusion of “Y” in Hayato’s Heart
With my super extremely long analysis, let me summarize (or I don’t need to?) that “Y” in Hayato’s Heart is…
Yukinoshita Haruno!!
In “LN v4 – the last chapter” and “anime ss1, ep8”, Watari-sensei presents her again at the end of this ch/episode to reveal about who is “Y” to everyone silently & perfectly (I mean she appears out of the limo gallantly at the end of LN v4). You can look for the name of this episode. It said…
“One Day, They Will Learn the Truth”.
Talk about “they will learn the truth”, I found out later that we can interpret this speech as various results. For me, after I wrote this post many years, I found out many things that I call them, “the deepest layer” and “the core”. These two things are the deeper info that surprised me a lot and I shared how to find them in this post, that is my own analyzing for the student council election (LN v8).
Since I found out those info, I reviewed this “Y” post again and decided to write how to find “Y” truly. Although I still believe that my analyzing above (“Y” is Haruno) is the result but even “Y” has its own “the core”. The core is the info that is not about the story and character anymore. But the problem is what I should do to write “how-to” so you can explore the answer of “the true Y”.
Requirement
- Read the previous post that I shared above. – Because I wrote my own experience finding out the deepest layer and the core via LN v8. When I found them, those info guided me to the final answer of “Y”.
- Believe that my how-to and the results of the previous post are correct. – I have no any intention to brag or anything silly after all. But to find the answer of “Y”, the belief is the important key to pursue the truth. Finding “Y” this time is not easy at all. But this is the shortest way I can think.
- After you did 1.) & 2.) and if there is a chance that your assumption (after using my how-to) is the same as mine (that I can’t tell you what it is because this is the best way), you need to review “Y” as another level, ignore the story, characters, the present event (the summer camp).
After I did as 1 & 2, I suspect that “Y” in the core level is not Haruno. I think it’s understandable if my explanation confuses you but I still conclude like this. The answer of “Y” is still Haruno because this is the answer in the hidden level but the core of “Y” is completely different. The moment when I found out that final answer, I looked back at “a certain person” in the story who has some unbeleivable connection with this final answer. But that person is still not “Y” in the level of the story because the core of this “Y” is the center of everything, not the surrounding factor.
You might wonder why I don’t reveal who is that answer, after I reviewed about this many days, I think this is the best way but telling the reason is not different from reveal the answer directly that is what I want to avoid because of something like the esteem and maintaining people’s position. We can talk about characters, story, events in the world of literature freely but this issue is completely different. This is not my excuse because I can tell you that if I find out that my answer is wrong, I will write more as I ever did like this in other posts so many times because the mistake and the correctness are parts of my journey that I like both of them, the same as when I decided to share how to find the core of “Y”. If I found out something new and think it’s suitable to share, I will do it and write how I continued the journey via writing analyses.
At last, I wish you will find the answer but I have another wish that is I hope you to consider what to do after realized that answer. This step is so important and my decision to not reveal that answer is the fruit of that considering because I want to pay attention to everyone. Sharing how-to for people who want to pursue the truth is my own final conclusion, it can let me appreciate everyone that is my ultimate goal.

This Oregairu analysis concentrates an event in v3. I wrote earlier about how Hayama wants to know what’s good in Hachiman until he observes Hachiman during summer camp. Because a certain girl concerns herself with him. This analysis will give you the answer and might clear your doubtfulness about Hayama’s weird behaviors towards Hachiman starts during the summer camp until now. Hidden keyword – “je******”.
This analysis concentrates Rumi’s case that happens at the same time as Hayama reveals the name of the girl he likes.

Dude, you’ve read all these volumes, and you still don’t understand what Hayato is really like or his thought processes. Also, your post is full of confirmation biases. All of your “data” can be interpreted in a myriad of ways, which will point to a completely different person, or as I believe, no one. You think you have it figured out, but Watari has totally put you in his string. He’s a red herring guy, don’t think about it too deeply.

i am pretty much agree with fawkey, i don read just watch but u missng lot of think i guess:
1. yukino nvr talk/see in the eye with hayama (somethink sure happen in the past maybe yukino like hayama maybe not because yukino hinted to use 2 hikitani childhood bullied nick name, but i think now she dislike hayama because how hayama treat her like treat rumi)
2. haruno only interest in hikitani bcause she probably know yukino have interest in hikitani since 1st time thy buy yui present, that ice cold girl is not the type to ask random guy to walk around don u think, n hayama only following haruno out of fear :).
3. hayama miss spelling yukinosita with yukino somewhere in mid season 2, he don need to correct it if there is really nothing happen in the past.
well there is a lot, but you might be right dude because the writer can do whatever twist he want 😀 n i will enjoy it as a reader

My analysis is based on Hayama Hayato is very interesting & smart character. (in the same level as Haruno and smart more than me, my IQ is very normal.) He can solve problems effectively even if he has short time (like in case of Tobe importunes his answer.)

this is a good analysis. however, at some point from s1-s2… I really did think that the Y (Hayato mentioned was pointing out to) = Yukino and not Haruno, although they share the same last name with initial of “Y”. Simply because their past (Hayato and Yukino) seemingly more tied/connected than how Hayato’s relationship with Haruno from the past up to present…(?) I think, we can only be assured of their relationships if Watari-sensei made a part II of the LN and fill up the past of Haruno, Hayato and Yukino which will clear all the blurry parts of the story.

I didn’t know oregairu was this deep since season 1 but when i don’t understand some of season 2 I did some bit of researching and stumbled on reddit and this was linked over. My thinking of the plot is deep so as I say but in truth my understanding was too shallow. Thanks for this, it is very interesting.

uhm..why are the main characters names start with same letter as their surname ? .i dont know why but it seems fishy. was it intended by the writer or pure coincidence. and the haruno theory was pretty good too.

Nice theory, and because this I watch again the anime, and I found another clue again in Season 1 episode 9, when Haruno meet Hikkigaya and Yuigahama in summer fest, when they talking in someplace while wathcing the fireworks, Haruno ask Hikki and Yui are in date? and when they answer, she says “because, if you really in a date, thats mean, Yukino has not choosen again.”
So maybe its clue about Yukino and Hayama relationship, that Hayama has choose Haruno than Yukino.

It’s definitely either Haruno or Yukino. I think that either Hayato rejected Yukino in the past because he liked Haruno which in turn helped to ostracize Yukino even further from the girls in their elementary school or he showed an interest in Yukino in the past which made the other girls feel jealous so they bullied her and he either tried to help her and failed or he didn’t do anything to help her which has caused their previous relationship to become strained.
I actually read a comment recently on Reddit that said Yukinos request to the service club will be to help her to repair her relationship with Hayato because she likes him… I mean, how far off the mark can you be? Are we even reading/watching the same thing!? Anyway, I digress. You’ve definitely given me a lot to think about, I was actually leaning more towards Hayato liking Yukino before I read this but now I’m not so sure. You might be right in saying it’s Haruno.

And I want to know what really happened between those three too. I read from LN that both Hayama & Yukino admires Haruno, the perfect sister but her existence started to pain Yukino. She feels inferior because her family wishes she will be like her too, but she can’t. And when she tries her best to reach her older sister, she feels inferior more and gives up. And plus with she was bullied in the school. Hayama, who is scared this situation, escapes to the safe zone and abandoned her.
Later Yukino would realize Hayama has his feeling for her perfect sister. He should be the one who she can rely on, but he can’t save her because his own fear and he has the one he likes already. Her inferior feeling was peaked to the maximum. She thought she has no anyone to support her, and she can’t reach her sister. It resulted she keeps her distance from her overwhelming perfect sister. Everything was taken away from her because of the existence of Haruno. This would be wall/assumption she created from that time.
Yukino’s request? If she wishes to repair the relationship between her and Hayato, I doubt that. Because she told conclusion (bad relationship in the past) with him in LN v10 already. So I don’t see why Yukino wants to return to him (in case of she ever had feeling to him). And I don’t see any signal she likes him either. OK. Haruno said once during firework festival that Yukino would not be chosen again. I think we can translate her words in 2 different way, directly and indirectly.
Directly – Yukino would love Hayama, but he loves Haruno. = she was rejected.
Indirectly – Haruno misunderstood that Yukino loves Hayama (she just rely on him, the best friend). Haruno sees her sister as cute/shy when she wants to befriend with Hayama, so I guess she can misunderstand Yukino’s feeling. And end up try to match Hayama and Yukino. Hayama can’t say anything because he loves beautiful older sister, so he shuts his mouth. Yukino doesn’t know about love since she is still a kid, but wants to be with him and her sister, so anyway is OK!
And we are reading Watari style, so I don’t think we can translate their relationship directly or so easily. It is still be secret until now, so it should be something that… no way to guess so easily, I assume.

Now that volume 11 is out (I don’t think it was when you wrote the original post…? Correct me if I’m wrong) I think we can piece together exactly what happened between the three.
(minor spoilers vol. 11) We now know that Yukino made chocolates for Hayama in elementary school. If we add that on to what you said here, I think what most likely happened was that Yukino tried to confess to Hayama on Valentine’s, got rejected because “I like your sister more.” That translated into “Your sister is better than you” in Yukino’s mind. Yukino was then ostracized from the class because of the confession, and Haruno probably flipped out somehow when she found out about how Hayama did nothing.
I’ve always guessed the “Y” was Haruno by process of elimination (e.g. she was the only crush that causes Hayama to stay in limbo) but you’ve helped me organize my thoughts very well. Thank you so much!

Oh! I remember this scene. Your assumption about confession is very interesting.
It’s possible that Hayama might reject Yukino when she gave choco and confessed. But I doubt at the same time too. I mean, we know the nice guy Hayama. So I assume he is nice boy back then as well. When Yukino gives him choco, her sister was there too so she gave her some as well. If Yukino confessed to him, it will be something off. And with Hayama, the nice boy, would not has courage enough to reject Yukino in front of Haruno for sure. Moreover, he wants to maintain relationship between them.
I don’t really know Hayama told Yukino he loves Haruno or not. But your assumption about translation is very interesting. It’s possible Yukino will feel heavy inferior because Hayama’s rejection and the perfect being of Haruno. That’s why she lost everything (in her mind) & escaped to study abroad.

You’re probably right that my guess is probably a bit too extreme. It’s a bad habit of mine, but I find it easier to start with an extreme guess and then whittle it down. Heh.
I guess I based my guess on the assumption that Yukino, Haruno, and Hayama grew up into their personalities, rather than being born with their personalities. In that scenario, I guess the incident between the three would be the cause of their personalities in the present day. I can’t think of any evidence off the top of my head that talks about what their personalities were like before the incident though, so I’m not sure. (Except for Haruno’s constant “Yukino-chan was so cute back then!” but that’s probably dishonest narration)
A final thought. Do you think Watari will reveal what happened back then? I can see good arguments for both yes and no, so what do you think?

Actually, your assumption is interesting for real that made me tried to think about this. It’s fine if it came from pure guess. I ever think like you think often (until now I still think like this too). I read comments from other communities that came from 100% feeling only, so yours is better in my opinion because your pure guess came from your experience after read LN (even watch anime) carefully.
And now your assumption this time is interesting again. I agree with you about their personalities grew up from environment more than born with their personalities. However, let me add my assumption continue from your assumption.
She was pressured by family so her personality we see until now is her own image for protecting herself 90%.
But whenever her copy personality happens, her personality is 0%.
However, when her determination is clear (like when school festival before concert), her personality mixed with identity, so we see her like that.
So I can say Yukino’s personality wavers more than problematic two characters above.
I think you are right about the incident between them causes them to have personalities until now. But I think more that their personalities was pressured for a long time. The incident between them is one of that (especially Hayama and Yukino). The incident back then is like Thor Hammer for them to have personalities like this.
My assumption above based on pure guess after think the story in LN.
Haruno’s opinion about Yukino in the past, we should become Haruno. So please imagine Yukino in mini size. And you are older than her. ;3
A final thought. Do you think Watari will reveal what happened back then? I can see good arguments for both yes and no, so what do you think?
Sure thing 1 million percent. He tries his best to hide this important information until now (and just reveal tiny clues only) in order to reveal like nuclear bomb in later volume (but I’m not sure which volume).

This theory of yours explains why Yukino is keeping distance away from Hayato (since he’s the one causing her suffering) and Haruno (an inferiority complex because of the difference between their achievements in life, but that might only be the front, perhaps she’s jealous her sister is the one on Hayato’s mind). So far it’s just a theory, but with the way things go, it’s becoming more likely to be true.

Wow, this is what I call godlike analysis
But let me tell you about a thing I noticed
When you said that if Hachiman is in the same elementary school as Hayato, he was afraid of Yukino becoming friendlier and so because of Hachiman saving her, THE SAME WAY AS RUMI (Sorry for using capslocks, I’m on mobile so I can’t bold the words)
That is if Hachiman is as pessimistic as he is right now. If I’m not wrong, I once read in this anime’s wikia that someone has stated that Hachiman once had a normal eyes but not shown to the audiences at all. Plus, throughout the anime, whenever Hachiman’s past is shown, he is still trying to be social and friendly (for some reason he is still hated, and his eyes are also covered, anytime). This indicates that if Hachiman is in the same school as Hayato and Yukino, the analysis that you’ve put has relatively small chance to be true.
I also know that you said Hachiman answered confidently, and he said “you’ll have one more loner at your school”. For this case, I know he would say that because of his pessimism and perspective of life. (Please don’t judge me, I know because I’m a pessimist myself)
Well, me saying all that only cover your analysis about what’s going on inside Hayato’s mind near the end of your article. I hope I didn’t waste your time if you’re reading my comment.
Either way, what I said can’t affect the overall result. And this article, sir, is amazingly accurate ( the details ) and worth to read.

About my thought in Hayama’s mind when he mentions about what if Hachiman was in the same school, I admit that is my personal thought only. So I think your thought might be right too. What I interpret in Hayama’s mind, is just assumption only and I never dare say I’m 100% right. I analyzed some incidents and expressed my conclusion only. No bragging after all, so I hope you will not misunderstand that I try to outsmart the author. You can read in Attention page before proceed my analysis, because I never think I’m smart or genius. You will find when you read more analysis of mine that there’re many faults/errors in every analysis. If you expect the absolute/perfect answers, I’m afraid I can’t provide that.
I will not judge anyone because I don’t have any right to do that at the first place. So feel free to write your opinion. I hope to read your thoughts in the future too. I have normal IQ, and I agree with you that the only one who knows all, is the author only, at least not me for sure. Actually, to write these analysis, one of reason of mine is to wait for the author to reveal the right answer.

And don’t worry, all of this are simply the matter of perspective. So I’m not even slightly think that you’re trying to outsmart the author, we all know it’s impossible.
Anyway, thanks for replying to my comments and had a little debate over this. The only thing that is important is that we all can enjoy reading/watching the novel/anime because the series itself is awesome.

Back when I watched Oregairu anime S1, and was ignorant to the LN’s existence, I never thought I could dive deep into the story. And everything change when the fire na-cough wrong series. But then I began to sink when I watched S2 where the plot finally thicken, and realized how deep an ocean could be.
Well, long story short, I find this Analysis amazing. I always admire people like you, Sir, who devoted his/her time for something which other people might think is trivial. Again, I commend you for your hard work and devotion. Please keep up the good work ^^

I think the same with you too. Anime is awesome but many scenes were cut so watchers can’t understand the in-depth meaning of its story and characters (I think the author would plan to use anime to make people decide to buy LN as much as possible).

Really hoping your analysis is true, hate that guy anyways but just what if it is Yukino? since his personality is live up to everyone’s expectation, I assume there must be some expectation for him to have relationship with yukino for sake of his and her parents(business marriage) and that is probably the reason hayama build up good relationship with haruno and their parents first. He is upset prolly bcause hachiman is able to slowly open up with yukino. I just say this without thorougly analysis like you did(I need to watch both season again), and I skip some of your analysis above(sorry). damn, I just could not wait for author to continue the series, there so much need to be explain and I want the series to be long at the same time I want the conclusion now crycry

It’s possible that “Y” is Yukino as well because the author still doesn’t reveal who Hayato likes yet. About his motto (living up to everyone’s expectation) is solid, but when I checked out in LN, I notice that he will not answer something that requires high responsibilities (such as the school council president position, but it might be because he is the captain of the soccer club), he will do anything so he will not need to answer that heavy expectation. I think “the business marriage” is one of things that is very important & long term. I think if he doesn’t want to marry with girl he doesn’t like, he will do anything even use people to change the situation (such as what happened in LN v8). I’m writing how he will use people effectively to change his bad situations.
This is OOT, but I notice the business marriage will happen in this story too. I notice from “those two volumes”. I plan to write about this later as well, since it seems people didn’t notice those clues.
Your theory is very interesting. Because you interpreted from Hayato’s behavior and the relationship between those families is healthy. It’s not strange if he will be a nice boy in front of adults. Just read your comment makes me rethink about Hayato and Yukinoshita sisters again. 😀 I really, Really and REALLY hope LN v12 will come to us soon.

Maybe the reason why he says that Haruhi was looking after was because she called him before and told him about hikigaya and told him to go on the trip with hikigaya and he brought his friends along with him as well, it would foster a lot jelousy from hayato

Dunno if this will still count based on how long this have been posted but then if hayama like haruno why did he get mad about the rumor saying he is dating yukino but yukino said its not a bad thing. if i remember correctly ? And about the parents also i really think that there had been a fixed marriage on their past thats why (haruno)? Asked 8man to help yukino someday? But the most thing i want to find out is when will the season 3 will be out and if there will be cause it’s a fcking cliffhanger as it is right now .. but thats a good theory i totally got whay you mean on yukino and hayama past that yukino got bullied and hayama didnt help that’s why yukino hate hayama although its good that this theory doesnt link that that Y is yukino cause i fcking ship Yukino and Hachiman

I think hayama is always super careful when it is relate to boy/girl relationship of himself because he is worried the bad things will happen again in the school. When he and yukino knew about someone caused the rumor about them, i notice they are in alert mode, careful to not meet each other, especially Hayama who the writer showed his feelings when the rumor happened and some friends noticed he created invisible wall, cant tell what’s in his mind to friends. Even haruno, when she knew this rumor via Isshiki, she “retreated” immediately by interested her job, didn’t meddle or stir up about this. I think she knows that it will cause big trouble for her little sister if she did that. Their (yukino hayama haruno) behaviors told me the same that maybe yukino and Hayama ever suffered because of the rumor about their relationship before (and I suspect it happened during their late elementary school period). But I don’t know Haruno was involved in the rumor in the past or not or just yukino and Hayama.
Another evidence why I think they suffered a lot because of the rumor that would happened in the past, is when Hayama told as if he is at fault and he will find a way to stop it (although this is not his fault). I think he hated how the outstanding people like himself was pulled by ignorant people without his own will, that makes him fall into the the situation he never wish to be, that if I am not erong, their relationship as close childhood friend shattered because both of them were pushed to the spotlight that made him can’t help yukino (side with her or stop people bully her) because he too, was terrified to do that because he didn’t want people change the target (yukino). That’s why yukino who got heavy bullied from the small society, asked help from her only ally, but how can he help her if he was worried he will end up standing at the center of the collosium and fight with malice of people. That’s too much for a kid to bear. So his guilty that can’t help her and his outstanding, made him think he himself was at fault in the present time, and intent to stop it in “his own style”.
That’s why he was very angry when he knew the rumor about himself and yukino happened again although he tried his best to be super careful regard the boy/girl relationship.
I can’t remember when yukino said it’s not a bad thing.

Man, I am so veryate to this party,but here goes.
I think that “Y” is Yuigahama.
First of all, lets eliminate possibilities. You have already said that it must be a girl. So that leaves us with with Yuigahama, Yukino, Haruno and Yumiko. He obviously dorsnt have feelings for Yumiko, so we can write her off. Then, Yukinoshita. As was stated, they went to the same elementary school. Two events happened : Yukino got rejected and wasnt saved by Hayato. There a 2 possible time orders fot this but i think that she wouldnt give him a Valentines day chocoloate after seeing him not help her. So she got rejected and then bullied. Ehich means she is not the one, because if he did have feelings for her after she gave him the present, he wouldve done something to “save” her from the bullies. He did feel guilty about not helping her though, so he tried to maintain good relations with her and her family. Which explains his relationship with Haruno. He has a good relationship with her since he has known her for a long time, their families are close and Haruno being the manipulative person she is, can make him do things like the donut shop.
Now, this leaves only Haruno and Yui in the game. Haruno has taken an interested in Hachiman because he can see the persona behind the mask and, because Haruno cares for her sister, is happy to see that she has someone going out with her, since she doesnt have any friends. Now, I think that Hayato has a crush on Yui, because he once stated that he is not the nice person Hachiman thinks him to be, and later we find out that Yui says the same. Yui is in his group of friends for a while now and I think that he mightve noticed this and started to like her. The reason doesnt really matter, the main point is that he has a crush on her. He is aware that Yumiko admires him and because of that he is taking his time, not wanting to disrupt his group of friends by making Yumiko jealous.
This is where Hachiman steps into the picture. He wasnt on his radar until now, but he had seen Yui talk to him and that he is in the same club as her. He thinks that even if he was his rival, he would stand no chamce against him, so he dismissess him as a no threat. During the camp, when theyre making curry, he wants to ask him about yui but gets interrupted? Why ask him ? Firstly because he isnt from his group, that way there will be no damage done and secondly, he is the one spending a lot of time with her so he is the perfect person. Later, when dealing with Rumis problems and after his speech, he is starting to dislike him because of their ideals being completely differrent, as you stated before. He now wants to know more about him. When he is called to the donut shop by Haruno, he meets him there and relizes that Haruno might know more about him. Hayato ask her about him and learns that Hachiman went to see fireworks with Yui. This makes him much more jealous and he thinks that he is inferior to Hachiman.
Well, there you have it. I think that Hayato doesnt have that much reasons to really like Haruno, on the other hand if you look at his behaviour from this perspective, everything makes sense. I cant say that I know for sure that Yui is his crush, but this is my take on it.

About yui is Hayato’s crush is also possible to me too. But I wonder that their similarities about awaring themselves is the factor that make him interest her. But I do think both of them are similar and said similar thing to Hachiman and us. Although it appears that almost characters would know well about themselves they are not good person or rotten (such as ebina who stated she hates herself).
If Yuigahama is his crush for real, it will impact the story within his circle that became the love triangle (haya x yui x yumi) or love square (hachi x haya x yui x yumi) if look within the wider circle (classmates) that is very interesting for me but until now if love square happened for real, it seems there’s Hayama only who is suffering. And if he interestes in Yuigahama like you assumed, I think a certain girl would notice instantly.
Yumiko.
Yumiko always looks out for him and there’s one time she noticed his gaze in ln v10 when he gazed at Haruno from afar, yumiko pretends she didn’t care much but still asked him who haruno is to him. This scene made me think yumiko who always has feeling for him and looks for him = she can notice his gaze so easily.
So if yumiko can notice who he will look at, it’s impossible she will miss his gaze toward Yuigahama although he is professional in maintaining the status quo.
Then if Yumiko realized he has feeling for Yuigahama, I doubt she can stay as she is until now because Yuigahama is her friend, Hayama is her crush but he interests her friend. If it’s like I assumed, yumiko would suffer clearly already (notice from her suffering just there’s rumor between him and yukino). But what I can see is she is still fine, it’s almost impossible to hide love within the small circle and all of them are not novice in observing the one they interest.
This is just me, but I notice Haruno has the influence to Hayama the most. Whenever both of them are near, I feel he always looks at her (and I don’t mean he admires her only but something powerful that impact him until now). And how he tried his best secretly to make her interest in him in many volumes, made me can’t find out other answer more than this anymore.
However, although I didn’t feel he loves Yuigahama but your assumpsions are very interesting and they made me rethink about “Y”
again (can i ask you are the one who wrote this theory in tumblr I ever read or not?)

I definitely see where youre coming from and I think that your theory was well thought out. Now that you point out Yumiko, it does seem that it would be hard to hife his feelings from her. And if I correctly understood your question, I myself wrote this analysis yesterday, I dont have a Tumblr and I havent looked at other analyses except yours (yet).

Although I myself think my own assumpsions are reasonable enough, but since the story focused on 8man & people around him, nit yumiko or people close to her, so I still think anyone who has initial “Y” in their name might be Hayama’s crush (although I picked the choice already).
So you are not the owner of that analysis in tumblr. I think the post over there was well written and support your theory.

Now I can definitely see where youre coming from. I didnt factor her in as much as I should have. With this fact it really does seem a bit unreasonable for her not to notice or him to be that good at hiding it. If I understood your question correctly, I did write this theory, havent read any other theories about this subject except from you(yet) and I dont have a tumblr.
I, too, think that it would definitely be interesting to see a version with Yukino as his crush.

Your analysis is machigatteiru. Volume 6 chapter 4 part 3. Haruno tells Hachiman that ‘Hayato is like a brother to me’. After that there is nothing written about Hayato being sullen about those words. If Watari sensei wanted to get across that Hayama likes Haruno he would have written Hayama’s upset situation. The fact that he did not means your analysis wrong. Also Hayama close enough to call Haruno by name. So he would not call her ‘Yukinoshita-san’ when he was about ask Hachiman during th camp. He could easyly call her Haruno-san. Also don’t forget that he calls yukinoshita yukino ‘Yukino-chan’ in v10. Of course there are much more hints that he like Yukino but since it will take a long time to write I chose Not To. The hint v8 when he tells hachiman about his worth.

Thank you for reply. And it might be like you think that my analysis is wrong. But WW wrote the upset situations that appears in LN v8, during the doughnut event. The writer is so skillful in writing that he can hide Hayato’s feeling (and even Haruno’s feeling) that I need to interpret carefully in order to know what really happens when Hayato talks with Haruno in that cafe.
I agree with you about the issue that Hayato would not call Haruno “Yukinoshita-san” when he is going to start to ask 8man during the camp. Because it will be duplicate (Hayato calls Yukino “Yukinoshita-san) that will confuse 8man. And if he asks 8man about Haruno but calls her “Haruno-san”, 8man will be confused because he is not sure who is “Haruno-san” that Hayato is referring. So I think that Hayato calls Haruno “Yukinoshita Haruno” in the first asking is reasonable.
About calling name formally or not, we need to think what happened between Yukinoshita sisters and Hayato in the past, also their personalities. Because all of these are parts of their lives.
